Opinion: Best Adventure Path

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Okay so I have a two part question. (could be the same answer though)

I'm starting a new group with some guys from work. They are new in the ways of Pathfinder and d20 games in general. I'll be DMing and playing (healbot cleric most likely, not a GMPC superstar) and my question is this: what's the best AP for a group like this besides Rise of the Runelords? (I'm finishing that up with another group and don't want to go through it again)

And while we're on the subject what's your favorite AP out of all of them?

Sovereign Court

Curse of the Crimson Throne is a great AP and not something I think newbs would struggle with terribly.

My favorite as a player so far has been Kingmaker. Though I like random hexcrawling, kingdom building, plus sandbox style games.

I do want to say that I find no AP perfect out of the box and all of them are best suited with a little personal adjustment to table IMO. Once choosing an AP I highly recommend taking advantage of that APs subforum.

Grand Lodge

Shackled City, but I'm rather biased towards it.

Sovereign Court

Find out what they like. The variety of the topics of the various APs will generally find a soft spot with any group.

Wanna be a bunch of Rebels? Council of Thieves.

Wanna have them continue the exploits of Sandpoint? Jade Regent.

Wanna be pirates? Skull and Shackles.

Fight against the Hordes of the Abyss in Mythic proportions? Wrath of the Righteous.

Sandbox kingdom making? Kingmaker.

Egyptian style adventure? Mummy's Mask

Undead hunting? Carrion Crown.

Jungles? Serpent Skull.

etc....

Rise of the Runelords. Probably because we are at 11th level and I have never reached that high before with the character all the way from 1st.

From what i have played:
RotRL but since you say you have already played that then my recommendation is Jade Regent (just ditch the caravan rules).

From what i have heard about CoT this isn't the case, in fact i have heard complaints that the AP starts like this (having you think being a rebel and all that jazz) and then goes on and does something other.

What?

You start Jade Regent in Sandpoint, spent half a book in the swamps near Sandpoint and then you are gone, Jade Regents has almost nothing to do with Sandpoint.

As a GM I liked Carrion Crown except for books 4 and 6, and Age of Worms.

Do not run Age of Worms for new people.

As a player I would have to say Shackled City, and Curse of the Crimson Throne.

I would also not suggest Shackled City for new people.

If you don't mind fudging dice so they can live then Shackled City is more manageable.

Ok enough of my rambling. For sake of ease I will say you should look at Carrion Crown, but also check around the boards to see if that is something you would like to run.

Curse of the Crimson Throne and Savage Tide are the two best AP's IMHO.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, keep em coming!

Sidenote: I wish they would print bound complete APs like RotRL Anni

I started to run it a couple of years ago...Due to circumstances I never got past the 1st book, but even into the 6th book it seems that the idea of the rebellion is alive and well. The adventure synopsis says as such.

That is true, but you start there and w/o giving spoilers you are dealing with a main protagonist for the town. Maybe I misspoke, but since it seems like he would not want to spend to much time there it felt as if it was a good way to see about his attention to it.

The only adventure Paths I currently own are Rise of the Runelords, Kingmaker and Reign of Winter.

Reign of Winter is probably my favorite because its so off the wall and weird.

After that its Rise of the Runelords, which has a lot of neat stuff and weird creatures and encounters.

Finally there's Kingmaker. I like Kingmaker, but the kingdom building rules (even the revised ones in ultimate campaign)are kind of intimidating, and the final big bad of book six kind of comes right out of left field. (That being said; Cyclops Lich. CYCLOPS. LICH).
