If the stated job of the GM doesn't include the word "fun" with reference to the players than I would avoid them. It's my personal philosophy though, so it depends on why you want to play. If you want to play for fun and that's not what the GM wants, immediately run.
Now, the GM attempting to murder you can be fun (see Paranoia and Rappan Athuk). If the GM using his absolute power solely to attempt to murder the characters isn't what you want from the game (and/or not fun for you) then yes, flee. Flee like a fighter before a rust monster!

That's not the GM's job at all but I wouldn't bail out just yet. Perhaps he was just joking with you. If you guys start experiencing an unusually high number of deaths then perhaps you should consider talking to him about it out of game.
The GM is supposed to work with the players to create a game that is fun for all. He shouldn't mollycoddle you but he shouldn't be out to get a total party kill either.

I personally like the idea of a campaign that acts like a horror mystery, with some kind of killer killing off the characters and the PCs having to solve the mystery before they're next!
However, if he's using cheaty tactics and forcefully trying to trap you in the corner while he beats on you with Elder Dragons at level 2, you might wanna leave, because there's no fun in playing with unfair cheaters.

On second thought I'd probably enjoy a game where you're supposed to go in with multiple backup character sheets and expect to use them; it'd be an interesting change of pace from my usual games that have a more coherent narrative. From the OP's tone it doesn't seem like they'd be too thrilled with that sort of game, though.

I like it when the GM challenges us. Killing us, less fun. But the occasional death proves there are consequences to your PCs' actions.
Especially their dumb actions.
:-P
And in out 5th Edition game, our five 6th level PCs (dwarf life cleric, ranger archer, arcane trickster rogue, diviner wizard, and fighter/rogue/wizard) are fighter 30 ogres, 6 ogre champions, a magical ogress queen and an ogre king.
So, um, yeah....
Sometime the DM doesn't even HAVE to try to kill the PCs....
:-P

Not gaming at all is better than bad gaming.
I recently left a table that a friend is DMing at. I tried to be forgiving because he is new at DMing but he also has a problem of not listening.
He dropped 7 consecutive hooks that didn't go anywhere, and let another player (who was playing a hellknight) attack and kill my character unprovoked because I violated his code by stealing a dead bandits ghillie suit.
Theres only so much d*****baggery one should put up with at the table.
If your DM thinks its his job to keep you busy drawing up new character sheets I suggest find another table or offer to run a game yourself.

Have since left that group. GM did in fact kill my character and another players character in one fell swoop. Used BS alternate dimension of death or some such shite. Haven't spoken to them again and have started with another group who were also tired of his tactics and gaming. Said GM is also power gamer and is not allowed in other groups in town.
