Fiendish Midwife - A Lamashtu Summoner Archetype

Homebrew and House Rules

Alignment: any evil

Deliver Monster: This functions like the Summon Monster ability with the following changes.

-The summoner can use this ability a number of times per day equal to her Charisma Bonus.

-All creatures summoned must be evil.

-Summoned creatures can only be called through the flesh of living targets within range. Targets must make a Fort save DC 10 + CR of creature(s) summoned to safely eject the creature from their bodies. A failed save results in the target taking 1d6 damage per two caster levels as the creature rips out of the target. Creatures land in an adjacent square after ejection and may act at the start of the next turn. If no hostile targets are available, the Fiendish Midwife can call creatures through herself and her allies safely (no save required).

This modifies the summon monster ability.

Is the range as per summon monster? Or touch range?

Does spell resistance apply?

Is this covered by an HMO?

So you can only summon creatures of the evil subtype from the SM list, or they're all fiendish, or... how exactly does that work?

I think the writing needs a bit of polish, but I like it.

Thank you for your responses. As for your questions...

-Range as per summon monster.
-Spell resistance does not apply. Get ready to breathe and push.
-I don't know what HMO is. Could you please inform me?
-Evil and fiendish creatures only as per the usual alignment restrictions based on summoning.
-Thank you, Cyrad.

I believe TheNPC was joking - an HMO is a medical insurance plan.

Frankly, I love the flavor of the whole thing. There's a good chance that, if you're okay with it, there's an NPC in RotRL that I'm tempted to slap this on.

Yep, just joking.

This gives me some fiendishly good ideas for a pc or npc. Good job!

On another note exactly where does the summoned monster come out of male...victims?

Yes...that was a joke. ;)

Now I kinda want to know...

^I'm envisioning a scene like the one in Bruce Almighty where he meets some thugs again (who had previously beat him up back when he was not divinely empowered) after he has gained divine power, and causes one of them to lay a monkey (and by the way, he later reverses the process, to the further distress of the same thug).

The alignment restriction should probably be Neutral or Chaotic Evil; Lamashtu doesn't have LE worshipers.

At any rate, this is flavorful and suitably unsettling. I approve, though the wording requires the polish given by other posters.

Thank you, Arachnofiend. Yes, LE should be excluded. I considered writing this with lots of gory flavor, but the muses weren't with me at the time.

Technically, Clerics of Lamashtu could be Chaotic Neutral, so it would be reasonable to allow this for the Summoner archetype as well.

True, but a CN Cleric of Lamashtu isn't forcefully impregnating their enemies with monsters. The mechanics of this summoner archetype are pretty much all Capital E Evil.

I mean, if it works... why not? Means to an end...

It sounds intressting, but I have some issues with the abilities:

1. I would set the DC to Fort (10 + Spell Level + Cha) - why? simply to keep the metrics of spell casting. ;)
2. I wouldn't change the amount of summon monsters per day
3. I would maybe add something like (The summoner can increase the DC by 2 when he's succeding a melee touch attack against the enemy)
4. I wouldn't remove the damage component when using this spell on a ally, I would simply half the damage (so it's still a "hard" decision^^).
4. a) I would add an option where an ally can't take the full damage. In exchange they can add the advance template to the monster or summon an additional monster of the same kind.

All in all very nice and flavourish idea, looking forward how this will end. :)

You might put the stipulation in that the summoned monster has to be the same size or less than victim spawning the monster.

Statements like this show that you are clearly not a servant of Lamashtu.

That makes sense, but lets assume the monster grows into its full size just as it makes its dramatic exit/entrance.

As for the other comments. This archetype is intended for evil characters only. Regardless of where or how the monster comes out of the target, there is still the strong element of unnatural violation that is an act of evil, whether it is intended as comedic or demeaning. Plus, everyone should be allowed the pleasure of forcing a paladin to fart out a fiendish dire rat with blue eyes that look just like his.

As for mechanics, I'm just an idea guy. Tryn, thank you for providing alternative numbers. I hope they can lead us to a more balanced concept.

Why would Lamashtu stop at corrupting mortals? Would it break anything if the summoner could summon LE devils and force them to make a save or be forcibly corrupted to CE in the process, even if it's just a temporary alignment switch?

I was just brainstorming, don't mean to sidetrack anyone. Also, there are a couple thematically-appropriate devils (physician devil and seducer devil (lilim)) in Wayfinder #11 (free!) that you could tweak to CE demons and add to your summoner's summon monster list.
