It gets stuck at the Apple screen with the little whirly bit going round-and-round. Tried starting in Safe Mode, too. No dice.

There isn't anything to recover. I just want to get it working again.
try to get ahold of boot media and do a complete reformat of the drive.
Given the age of the machine, it's possible you're dealing with hard drive failure.
You sure? I already did a re-install of the OS, and that was after booting it up and running Disk Utility to verify, and then repair the Hard drive.
You reinstalled the OS over what's probably a failed OS system. Simply reinstalling does not solve the problem by existing failed software.
This is not an appropriate place to seek help with OSX.
