Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed to play the Sorcerer Supreme.

I'm sure he'll be fine, but I'm a little disappointed in the casting. I don't really know who would have been a perfect fit, but the Batch was pretty low on my list.

Scarab Sages

Paul Blackthorne was my pick, he's done a great job as a wizard before, and he is tall and dark. But Cucumberbatch should be fine.

Cumberbatch is popular right now and casting him seems like a move to cast a popular actor to fill a lesser-known role.

He was tops on my list.

Cumberbatch has the gravitas to carry the MCU into it's next phase. Should Strange ever join the avengers I could see him playing the centerpiece much in the way that Robert Downey Jr does currently.

There are not many actors who can do that. I think Cumberbatch is one of them.

I think he is a good choice and I can't wait to see this movie when it comes out.

I like the choice...And Cumberhatch can do arrogant, which works for the character

Early rumors hint that a new roster of "Avengers" will be formed by Stark for the first half of the Infinity War, and I think it will be fun to see Stark and Strange but heads.

Last I heard it was Captain America that would form the new roster, were did you hear it was Tony?

There was a rumor that Tony would assemble a new band of Avengers for Infinity Wars Part 1, which would apparently...fail? or at least not stop Thanos in time? Possibly ending with Tony Stark's death? Presumably that would include Stark, along with newbies Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Dr. Strange, and Ant-man (and maybe Winter Soldier?). This may or may not be due to most of the original Avengers being out of action or assumed dead (Hulk...in space? Ragnarok and Cap 3 events?)

That would segue into Infinity War 2, which would require the Guardians, Thor, Hulk, and Cap to join up with the new Avengers, and take down Thanos.

Other than Infinity Wars being a two parter, all of this is just rumor at this point.

I was kind of hoping for Donald Faison as Doctor Strange, for the MCU/Scrubs crossover.

I heard it was going to be Steve that assembles the new Avengers as well, likely in keeping with "Cap's Kooky Quartet" era of the Avengers (when the founders disbanded and it was only Cap, Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and the Scarlet Witch- three former criminals and a hero- to take over).

That still seems the most likely scenario to me, although who knows if it will still be Steve Rogers as Cap at that point, or if they'll use the Civil War storyline and propel the Winter Soldier into the role or not.

I heard it would be Cap, Black widow, Hawkeye, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Vision.

Scarab Sages

I'm pretty pleased, much more so than I would have been if they'd cast Joaquin Phoenix or Ethan Hawke, who were also supposedly on the shortlist.

I like Cumberbatch, and he's a talented actor. I do wish he wasn't quite so overexposed, but that will hopefully be good for drawing in viewers who might otherwise not see the film.

I wonder if they'll make him do an American accent, though. I wish they wouldn't. I don't care what nationality Strange is.

This is from a bit back, but I was going through some old saved links and found it...

I'll give it a go.

I'm not the hugest Dr. Strange fan, but I did enjoy the animated movie- which my friends lovingly refer to as Brother Akashic instead of Doctor Strange.

Maybe playing up Dormammu as a Lovecraftian eldritch horror?

Shuma-Gorath is about as Cthulhoid as it gets and an old Dr. Strange foe.

Not that I'd actually expect them to use it, but it would be cool.

Like thejeff says, I'd think Shuma-Gorath is the route they'd go if they wanted a Cthulhu-esque vibe to things.

The Exchange

Good choice. I'm not a big Cumberbatch fan (I don't really like Sherlock and he was downright bad in that Star Trek movie - though to be fair in both cases my issue were more with the script than the actual actor). Still, even with having only the vaguest notion of who Doctor Strange is, it seems like a good fit.

Indeed.

Although they could easily throw some nice easter eggs in - maybe pan across a library shelf holding The Book of Eibon, Cultes De Goules, De Vermis Mysteriis, The Necronomicon, The Pnakotic Manuscripts, Unaussprechlichen Kulten....

Maybe even make a passing reference to information being gleaned from the Dhol Chants, the Revelations of Glaaki, or one of the Seven Cryptical Books of Hsan.

Hell, I'd love it if they had a scene with Doctor Strange telling a guest to not open a book they had just picked up, as it was very dangerous. Have them put down a copy of The King in Yellow.

Little things like that would, I think, go a long way.

Well, you started it by hissing every time the word "Whedon" is being pronounced!

Considering how awful every other attempt at bringing Strange to live action as been, this has no where to go but up.

Eh. I like Rumblepatch as Sherlock (better than Downey, actually), but haven't been terribly impressed with his other stuff.

I heard a bunch of names floated around that I would have preferred, but this isn't horrible news or anything.

He can at least carry off the gravitas I would expect, and doesn't seem likely to camp it up as much as someone like Depp would.

I would have liked to have seen Anson Mount from Hell on Wheels up for the role. Cumberbatch is...well, just overrated, in my opinion. Still, I'm hoping he'll make it a memorable role.

I'm interested in seeing which role they've tagged for Chiwetel Ejiofor in the Strange movie. I was hoping he'd be Black Panther in the upcoming movie, but oh well.

I think we'll probably wind up getting some horrible mashup of Harry Potter and Dresden, given modern tastes.

Bite your tongue!

(Although a dash of Dresden wouldn't suck.)

I have actually wondered why Marvel didn't take a lesson from the success of Harry Potter and have Dr. Strange pick up a few apprentices (not annoying British urchins, though!) and chronicle their (mis)adventures. SHIELD supposedly wanted to start their own arcane division, and it would be completely on-theme for them to horribly screw up and train a bunch of rookies to 'call uppe that which they cannot put downe,' leaving someone who actually has a clue, like Dr. Strange, to show up to save the day and clean up their mess (and recruit any survivors who have actual talent to learn magic from someone who knows what he's doing and isn't just going to toss them a copy of the Necronomicon and say 'go nuts').

I'm hoping they go for a Hellboy movie feel with this, or something more Urban Fantasy (cough Dresden Chronicles cough)

nooooooooooooooooooooooo to Dresden. In between Constantine being on TV and his show already off the air(but beloved), the last thing I'm looking for is Dresden redux.

Yeah. If you're going to do Strange, go big. Sorcerer Supreme, right?

I want to see old-school Steve Dikto weirdness.

Dr. Strange is "my hero," the Marvel character I am most devoted to. And I wish, to all the Hoary Hosts, that we not get another origin story movie. The animated film from a few years ago was a fine origin. Good. Move on and do something else.

Having said that, Strange's villain pool is pretty shallow. Dormammu / Umar / Mordo, yes, and then ... ? Nightmare? D'spayre? Silver Dagger? Many of the great Strange arcs have been self-contained storylines with either (a) one-shot opponents who never appear again, or, worse, (b) no really dangerous foes to begin with.

Which isn't to say that a Dr. Strange movie couldn't tread new ground, maybe based off his confrontations with Dracula or Morgan le Fey, both of which are well-established characters. (Come to think of it, other than the Avengers / Defenders cross-over from back in 1973, has there been an encounter between Dr. Strange and Loki? That could be fun.)

Rare to find a strange fan that liked the animated movie. Might you be a mta fan?

Chiwetel Ejiofor's role revealed in Doctor Strange

I like it. The dude is an awesome actor. And it sounds like maybe they'd have him as a combination of Mordo and maybe another mystic like Brother Voodoo or Baron Samedi.

Either way, I look forward to seeing where they go with this story.

The Exchange

He's the bad guy fron Serenity, right? I loved his villainy there. Good news.

Glad that show didn't kill his career.

You're getting sloppy, Freehold. As any true geek knows, you can't truly hate something unless you know as much about it as those that love it. Lack of obsession just shows you don't truly hate the Whedonverse and its creator, you're simply a fair-weather hater. Now get out there and rent the show and the subsequent movie and don't come back until you're properly seething. It's sad to see you get this sloppy.

On a side note, I was hoping he'd be considered for the role of Black Panther, but I'm perfectly happy to see him play the antagonist again, especially if they give the role some depth and he can really make it shine.

"Always with the negative waves, Moriarty!"

Seriously, you have to let go of your hate! How else are you ever gonna become a Jedi? Just....Let it go...

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation,
And it looks like I'm the queen.

The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I tried!

Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know!

Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door!

I don't care
What they're going to say
Let the storm rage on,
The cold never bothered me anyway!

It's funny how some distance
Makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me
Can't get to me at all!

It's time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me I'm free!

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry!

Here I stand
And here I'll stay
Let the storm rage on!

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back,
The past is in the past!

Let it go, let it go
When I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone!

Here I stand
In the light of day
Let the storm rage on,
The cold never bothered me anyway!

Whoever that guy is that plays Littlefinger in Game of Thones would be a perfect fit.

Throw some black hair dye on him, and a moustache and call it a day.
