Interest Check:Wild West Kingmaker

Recruitment

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Hello board peoples,

I've been getting an itch to run a Western genre game. I've been working on some house rules and an alternate Earth setting that has some fantasy worked in. I'm thinking Kingmaker would be a perfect transplant for this setting. It will take some shoehorning, but I'm willing to do the work. Here is what I've got so far:

Grit & Gunsmoke

So, would anyone be interested in this? It'd still be some time until I'm ready to run it. I need to finish off two other games I'm doing that are nearing their endings. So for now, this is simply a check of interest, not a recruitment. Feel free to ask any questions you might have. Thanks for your consideration.

That doc is pretty impressive. It gives a sense of the world you're envisioning.

I'll look forward to hearing more when recruitment starts, but consider me interested.

(Heck, it's hard not to be interested in a Jelani game!)

I too am interested.

Interested as well

I have a concept ready to go :P

Idea from the 80s show

Bravestar :P

Great detail and a really inventive retelling of history (Jebediah Lincoln!). Definitely interested.

I am interested. I am currently playing in a normal Kingmaker game in which we have reached 5th level. However, this looks significantly different that it should not be a conflict with my other campaign and I can separate player knowledge from character knowledge.

Was the Great War of the 1750s your version of the Seven Years War?

Aye.

Oh, I would totally make a character for this

This seems really cool. I am quite interested.

Would it be a possible concept to be bringing a religion (christian/islam/watever) to try to suppress the magic and such just like what happened with the old world?

Of course. Religion would exist in this game world just like it does on Earth, namely in many many varieties. But all the major Earth religions still exist. There are definitely Christians who burn/kill "witches" (magic users). It's like they used to do in the 17th century on real Earth, except on this Earth magic is real, so people never stopped even after science came along. Being a spell caster can get you in a lot of trouble in some places in Nova Roma.

Now I want to play a witch hunter who broke off from his more fanatical group to only go after the bad ones.

I should make clear that I will most likely remove alignment from this game as well.

Doing magic isn't actually evil, but the Bible and I believe the Quran both make "witchcraft", "divination" etc out as sins. Therefore some of the more extreme followers of those religions are willing to take violent measures to enforce those beliefs.

Seriously interested in this set-up; I'm thinking of a dwarf character. If dwarves are as long-lived in your Earth as they are normally, and slow to change, my thought is of archaic speech-patterns: while most people might be talking in 'authentic frontier gibberish' I would imagine dwarves to talk more like a character from Shakespeare (not always in iambic meter, though: 'tis harder than it looks to write, in truth).

Would that fit with your world? Also, how integrated are dwarves? It sounds like they have their own society and independent nations (perhaps in the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Urals); what about their religion(s)? Are they holding to the 'pagan' gods (whether Norse, Greek, Roman, or other) or do they have something altogether different?

I am currently thinking of a shaman or oracle. Basically a mystic hermit type.

Dwarves only exist on North America (at least in modern times), in the Rocky Mountains. They have their own language, which is closest to the human Norse languages, and speak English with a vaguely Scandinavian accent. Talking something like Thor in the older Marvel comics would be appropriate - "Young maiden of Midgard, thy language leaves something to be desired." "I say thee NAY!" "Thou and I hand to hand shall settle thy fate once and for all." etc.

Religion wise, they have their own monotheistic religion (Torag) which is similar to Judaism in many aspects, including that it casts dwarves as Torag's (God's) chosen people. Sins are atoned for with animal sacrifice and repentance, the daily life of orthodox practitioners is regulated by a strict set of rules for living (including dietary restrictions).

A trigger-happy slayer is my initial thought. Now I just have to figure out a character concept for his personality.

My initial idea is that he has an Anglican father and a Jewish mother and that this caused him to locked out of certain positions due to prejudice against Jews. Would that fit?

How much prejudice is there against Easterners? If I go human, the Dragon Phoenix Empire makes a lot of sense for my concept.

Sure, I can see that fitting. There is just as much religious persecution as there is in the real Earth.

Little to none. Thanks to there being sentient non-humans, the vast majority of the racism going on is of the fantastic variety. Human on human racism is viewed as very barbaric and ignorant by the vast majority of humans.

Couldn't help but chuckle at that. Sometimes I hate my own sense of humor.

Anyway. This setting is VERY intersting. As such, I'm very interested. I'd probably like to make a dwarf.

Gotcha, thanks. That's definitely something I can work with. Now I just need to think of a class to go with the character concept. Would you accept the "Crossbow style" or "Archery style" ranger path as going with firearms? Or is there actually a firearm ranger style that I just don't have the splatbook for? Or I could just go straight-up gunslinger. Decisions, decisions.

Errr....I meant to type "Thanks to there being sentient non-humanoids, the vast majority of the racism going on is of the fantastic variety. Human on human racism is viewed as very barbaric and ignorant by the vast majority of humans."

The ranger styles cannot be altered to work with firearms. There is no firearm style as far as I know. However bows have their advantages. They are quiet, and you never need to reload. Also most people won't be wearing anything more than light armor (if any), since guns go through armor and anything heavier than light is restricting.

I've begun work on converting Stolen Lands. I'm setting up a Roll20 campaign to handle the maps. There seems to be enough interest, so this will eventually turn into a game. I'll keep you guys posted on my progress.

I'm curious, is the general consensus among the religious fanatics that skinwalkers are just as bad as non-humanoids? Or does it vary depending on the religion or person? I've been wanting to play a skinwalker forever so I'm very excited to make a character. I'm thinking ranger or brawler for her. Would you be starting everyone at level one?

Most humans can't tell the difference between a skinwalker and a full blooded lyncanthrope. Lycanthropy doesn't spread like a disease in this world. It's limited to tribes of orcs, each of which venerate their particular animal as a totem spirit. These tribes live largely as animals more than people. They are nomadic and hunt their territory like whatever animal they can turn into. They are extremely savage, and raid humans whenever they can never hesitating to kill.

When they occasionally breed with a human, a skinwalker is born. Skinwalkers can then breed true with each other, so they usually band together and form secret communities. So it's not a religious exception to skinwalkers, so much as mistaking them for true Weres which are extremely dangerous and bloodthirsty.

Of course not everyone is like that, but the majority of people are. So being exposed as a skinwalker is likely to get you run out of town at the least, and probably lynched if you're in place where people aren't familiar with you.

"What be de stance on voodoo, mon?"

Have a character I'd like to play, but need the question above answered...hehehe.

If you have that information in your link, I apologize but haven't had a chance to see it beyond my initial cursory scan...

Voodoo exists...probably mostly in the form of witches and adepts.
