Shield Spikes + Specific Magic Armor, Legal?

Rules Questions

Shadow Lodge

Without devolving into a whole shield bashing debate (they are endless and end up more unclear then when they began, is it possible to put shield spikes on a Specific Magical shield.

For instance, I would like to put shield spikes on a Lion's Shield, simply put, is this possible?

Ask your GM. In this particular case, the spikes might interfere with the bite attack. But there is no general rule that specific shields cannot have spikes added.

I don't remember the citation, but somewhere in the core rules it says "improving" or modifying specific armors/shields require DM's approval.

Generally that means it's okay.

Hmm, I was considering this for PFS play. I might have to look around harder for a more definitive answer, but if there isn't a rule about it then it should be possible.

No, the assumption in PFS is the opposite: if it is not explicitly allowed, it's disallowed.

I find it most vexing, myself, but customizing magic items in any way is a PFS nono. I figure they figure it makes it easier for them to adjudicate consistently between tables.

Outside of PFS, I don't see any reason why you can't make a Shatterspike, except as an adamantine greatsword instead of a masterwork longsword, or whatever. Check with your DM, as always.

Yup, thats what i meant, the exact opposite of what i said >_<;

I was checking because I know you cant enchant a specific armor further than whats already built in, but with the argument that shield spikes arent really magic and that people have been saying that you can enchant the spikes separately from the shield (though im still unclear about that whole +20 shield thing, but im still researching) that I was thinking that you can just pound some spikes into a nice named shield.

You can NOT customize ANY specific armor, shield, or weapon for PFS play. It has to be how you can buy it in the books.
