is there such a magical item?

Advice

I have a player who insists on using his pistol while adjacent to an enemy. Is there a magical property that let's you fire a gun without taking an aoo while adjacent to an enemy?

I havent played many ranged characters (other than casters) but I think there are feats that allows you to fire ranged weapons next to enemies without taking AOO. I think its Point Blank Master (may also be using Snap Shot)

Nimble Shot weapon from the APG? It's like a +4 bonus though.

Shadow Lodge

Nimble Shot is indeed a +4 bonus

Point Blank Master will also do this, but it requires Weapon Specialization or the ranger archery combat style, so your player might not be able to qualify.

It has a 2 feat tax but there is also the deft shootist deed feat.

Grand Lodge

In short, yes there are... It's your player's onus to prove what mechanism he's using and to provide the source, if needed.

To the OP. Are you trying to audit your player's character to see if he's fairly avoiding attacks of opportunity or are you trying to help him avoid the AoO?

Protoman,

He's been playing an Alchemist/Gunslinger for the better part of a year now, and in our last session I took every AOO against him because he kept shooting the guy 5 feet away. We've told him countless times. I am attempting to be nice and have him come upon such a weapon or piece of equipment if it exists.
The Nimble Shot is exactly what I am looking for, but it's quite pricey, I'm not sure I'm feeling that nice!

I believe there is a General feat called 'Gunslinger' that allows you to shoot while being threatened without provoking.

Synthous if there is I haven't seen it.

The source of the feat is from PCS (Pathfinder Chronicle Setting). So I guess it really depends on whether or not the table would be running with this added selection. As to where I found the feat, I used d20pfsrd, under the general feats section.

www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/gunslinger Here is a link to it, that might help :)

I don't know how firearms worked back then, though.

Keep in mind that this is a 3.5 feat.

Thanks for the link Synthous. I did search for a pathfinder feat called gunslinger but didn't see one.

Well, some people just gotta learn the hard way. If he's gonna roleplay in combat a reckless alchemist/gunslinger (a combination that's ALREADY crazy accurate/damagey) that shoots from adjacent squares, he might as well take all the hits. Heck, maybe he's acting that way as a subtle way for him to level the playing field with your monsters ;)

Lol, yeah I might agree except he got real pissed about it. His excuse was that he didn't know. I told him, read the core rule book, ignorance is not an excuse. you're lvl 7 nearly 8. I can't baby sit the characters anymore.

Point Blank Master is specific to a weapon, so the version from the Ranger archery combat master won't work on a gun without special dispensation from the GM. (The Monk Zen Archer version is specific to longbow or shortbow only.)

Also, make sure to tell your player that throwing alchemist bombs while in melee also provokes, but Close Quarters Thrower will solve that problem.

Maybe just remind the character he can take a 5 foot step back for free if he doesn't do any other movement? Unless he's fighting folks with Step Up feats, that will generally do the trick.

Snap Shot is a little weird. With a strict reading, it won't prevent you from provoking an AoO when you're attacking normally. It only stops the AoO when you make an attack of opportunity yourself (which you wouldn't be able to do without the feat).

lol yea the whiner can learn the hard way if he doesn't wanna crack open the Combat chapter of the rulebook.

That's exactly how it works. Snap Shot doesn't change how you provoke an AoO; it just gives you the ability to take AoOs with a ranged weapon.

The archery combat style is not just for bows - it includes Crossbow Mastery. I don't see anything in RAW that prevents a ranger from taking Weapon Focus (some firearm) and PBM (that same firearm).
