So I hatched a tatzlwyrm, what now?

Advice

While exploring our land (Kingmaker AP) we encountered two Tatzlwyrms. After defeating them we searched their nest and found, besides some treasure hoard, something far more interesting: Two eggs. Being a descendant of true dragons myself I at one claimed to raise one of the little ones and hatched it. But what now? If I train/raise it (have not found out which sex it is) to follow me around it could be hurt, which I would not want. But should I let human parents care for my fosterchild?
I know, I should have given that some more thought but I had so very much to do with policing our newly founded kingdom (which it is not yet) and killing our enemies during the rages that tend to befall me during combat. So I spent to little time planning to be a good parent.

.....

Clearly the next steps largely depend on the GM. But as it took some real time for the little wyrm to hatch I guess he has some idea. But what should I do?
A tatzlwyrm is barely intelligent but understands my native language, draconic. It can inflict some acid damage which I am resistant enough to ignore, being a black scaled kobold. I could try to persuade/train the wyrm to be my mount. It will be large enough eventually. But even fully grown they are rather squishy.

I could ask my GM if I can take leadership at level 7 to make it my cohort. But having a low cha my leadership score will suck.

What should I do?

How low? Because as long as you don't have an extremely negative one your score will be at least your character level. Probably more since having a country probably counts as having a stronghold.

Give it levels in fighter savage warrior archetype. Or any archetype with a focus on natural weapons.

...wait, what'd you do with the other egg?

Dot for interest.

Most adventurers get a +3 on leadership. Maybe your hm woild guve you +2 circumstance if you're draconic (I would). From the description, a natural-weapon using fighter or barbarian would be appropriate... Or the new brawler...

My cha is 8. Hard to get all stats high as a kobold.

I am not sure what happened to the other egg. I grabbed one and ran off with it, so to speak.

Base is 3 hd, fully-grow. After 6 months, I'd let uou have with 2 levels of brawler (seems it would be a natural fit). What's your kobold like?

If I were you I would look into training it more as a guard dog and traveling mount than as an adventuring companion/combatant. Kingmaker has a lot of hexploration, with a scattering of dungeons, usually in remote locations.

I suspect your group, like mine, will ride horses etc. to get around, and ends up just leaving them outside when you go into the more dangerous areas. Having something a bit more formidable than a horse to protect the group's baggage and mounts adds some verisimilitude without really effecting game balance.

While their are plenty of encounters in the wild, and thus your tazzlewyrm (or any other mundane mount) would be in danger, most of these are over pretty quickly, and unless your GM is pretty vicious if you get off your mount to fight their is a good chance it won't be targeted.

My guess is that if you use the tatzlwyrm like this, your GM will be happy having it as flavor and not require leadership or something similar to keep it around.

I just want to add that, since you are playing kingmaker, you will probably have +4 leadership for being a great leader of a kingdom and being known everywhere.

Well, it's too late for omelets. How about dragon veal?

He is a black scaled natural weapon fighting invulnerable rager barbarian. As the kobold's stats are very low and the group needed someone to do the up and personal fighting the gm allowed me the primitive template, increasing the physical stats at the cost of the mental ones.

So think of him as a Neanderthal Kobold who dreams of one day being a real dragon. And while he lacks magic he can unleash quite a fury for his size.

As to using the wyrm as a mount: The wyrm's base speed is only 30ft. So he is slower than the horses and even slower than I (or at least will be once I get a mithral breastplate).

But I think shadowkras is right, as long as the little guy doesn't join the fights he will not be targeted by attacks.

No idea.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

throw a few levels into oracle and take the nature mystery though that you can get the bonded mount, which would be the tatzlwyrm. the prestige class rage prophet is really cool. this gives you access to some cools spells. only down side is you lose the rage powers with out taking the feat extra rage powers. but you could ask you DM if instead of the spells leveling you could get rage powers instead. if you go this route take the mounted rage powers. or for an easier route ask if you can retrain into the mounted fury archetype. then take the mounted rage powers. two small creatures make one medium creature so it could go places the party could go.

*says to party* You boys better keep your strength up, we've got a long journey ahead of us. Anyone up for omelettes?

Just a guess...buuuut: -

Anyone on the Kingmaker forums (especially GMs) will likely be better able
to answer your question & include within that answer the suitability for
use in Kingmaker...

Could work. Would at least give it some levels.

Or equally - the sylvan sorcerer bloodline. They get an animal companion.

So most here would take it along on my travels and not let it stay at home?
If it was a human child no one would go that route and while somewhat stupid the tatzlwyrm is still sentient and above animal intelligence.

What I am thinking about is taking the torchbearer feat. That way the wyrm gets some levels eventually and will be more used out of combat.
