Alternate Classes taking Archetypes(FAQ please)

Rules Questions

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

Can alternate classes such as Samurai, Ninja take archetypes from the classes they are alternates for ex. Cavalier and Rogue or can they only take archetypes if they are made for them ex Sword Saint for samurai.

I've seen people say yes and no so I'd thought it'd be a good subject for an FAQ.

It's yes. in ACG they go and say that alternate classes are just big archetypes. So if they have the features to replace they can.

Samurai, Ninja, and Anti-Paladin are just 20-level Archetypes for Cavalier, Rogue, and Paladin (respectively). Although this question has been asked several times, there is no debate about the answer.

This doesn't need to be FAQ'd. If you can find another Archetype that doesn't swap out any of the same class features (I'm unaware of any) then you can legally apply that Archetype to the Alternate class.

Ok I'll have to check out the ACG it seemed like they'd be treated as their own class since the Sword Saint archetype calls it out as a Samurai archetype not a Cavalier archetype.

I don't see why having a Samurai Archetype is a problem.

It's different from the norm, indeed, but certainly not beyond understanding.

There are Anti-Paladin archetypes too. Knight of the Sepulchre or something similar, I believe.
