Summoning Elementals beyond Earth, Wind, Water, Fire

Greetings fellow gamers,

I have a question for you: When Summon Monster (X) Says you can summon a (SIZE) Elemental, does it have to be one of the 4 in the bestiary? Could it be an Ice Elemental? A lightning Elemental? Magma? Mud?

They are broken down by size just like the others, and have similar CR ranges...

I would think yes, but I don't want to get too excited.

Unless it says you must choose from a given list for element type than, yes, you can. So long as the creature you want to summon matches the stated requirements.

All it says is Elemental so you can pick an elemental from any Bestiary...I once hit a party with 3 huge mud elementals...they were facing a pissed off Runelord of Sloth (Master conjurer) in an underground bunker.

China Meiville had some of those in one of his books, Railsea i think, really nasty things. They would just charge and grapple and absorb the meaty bits of anything they got ahold of. Worked great until the Light Elemental made them... i dunno, i dont think that was well explained. Made them be not there any more by hitting them. Sort of.

In Pathfinder Society, you cannot (and, similarly, you cannot choose an Improved Familiar beyond the basic four, either). I can dig up the quote later, but in the general Pathfinder rules I'm not aware of any restrictions, so feel free to summon your Chlorine Elemental.
