Doesn't a New Year's Eve launch of Early Enrollment effectively limit the stress on the server and create a false claim of server stability?
If the servers held up fine on New Year's Eve, but crashed on January 1, it would immediately give the lie to any false claims of stability. That wouldn't be a net bonus for Goblinworks; in fact, it could make them look worse than an "honest" rough launch. I suspect they know that.
If anything, I think the New Year's Eve launch is more an opportunity to say "We missed Q3, but we did start EE in 2014."

I don't mind if the number 2014 has anything to do with it. I don't know how it is in the States, but in Ontario, most New Years parties don't start till after 9 or 10 pm. For EST that gives a solid 8 hours to play on a day that a lot of people have off. Let's face it, it's not the general public, or even the general gaming public that will want in hour zero, it's us. And making it early in the day on a holiday makes it easier. Now I just have to convince my wife to end our trip a day early and get home somehow...

I think it's a consequence of "we and not going to do anything big with everyone out of the office for Christmas, so we will do the 48 hour coundown starting Monday".
I would be surprised if meeting a 2014 deadline was a factor in going live.
The concept of releasing in 2014 never crossed anybody's mind. It just happens that the EE build is ready to our satisfaction on the last day of the year. Total coincidence.

Convinced or no, I think the point still stands that a game release is judged on more than one day. Solid servers on Wednesday that crumble by Friday would be counted as a problem. For that reason, I don't think Wednesday was chosen as a low population day to show off a system too fragile to stand up on Friday, as Bluddwolf suggested. It wouldn't gain Goblinworks anything to start EE before they believe the servers are ready to go up and stay up.
