After playing since 3.0 came out I've been thinking... I don't think I ever seen a character use an item that grants spell resistance.
My guess is that it's due to prize being too high, and I've therefore consider house ruling it for my next campaign, but would like to hear your experience with SR items...
Have you ever used them on a character?
Are they common in your group?
Do you think the prize is too high?
Are there other problems with SR items than prize?

Nope.
Not common because...Price is way too high for little benefit.
They block buffs/healing from allies in combat.

Also, since most spell resistance items grant SR at a fixed number, they don't scale very well as levels increase.

To fix the scaling problem, I have the armor "attune" itself to the power of the one wearing it.
Make the +2 armor property SR = 4 + character level
Make the +3 armor property SR = 6 + character level
Make the +4 armor property SR = 8 + character level
Make the +5 armor property SR = 10 + character level
That's my change, along with the fact that I have SR only block hostile spells (unless you have a quality that forces you to make a save against friendly spells, such as the Superstitious Barbarian).
I've found it's just enough to make players sometimes consider buying the items/armor.

If you want folks to use more SR items and spells you might consider house ruling that spells with the "(harmless)" tag in their SR entry can pass through SR freely unless the creature with the SR intentionally resists them - kind of like how you can willingly fail the save against a beneficial spell
I've seen this rule used before, and it didn't seem to have any profound effects on the game. Nobody bought SR items anyhow since they cost a lot and are often too weak to be effective against enemy casters. Maybe it would also help adoption to use lots of "mook" casters who plink the PCs with low level nuisance spells.
I mean, I'm not sure why you want folks to buy SR items. I'm just trying to think of ways to make it happen.

SR is always on unless you take a standard action to lower it. Unless you house rule it, it hurts you more than it helps. I have seen a character die because they were unconscious and unable to lower the resistance to accept healing.
This is why potions are always handy to have, even with a healer in the party. Sure potions are expensive and hard to use in battle, but worth it for just this type of situation.

The cost is way to high. In addition it can interfere with friendly spells. When I played a race such as drow in the past I would ask the GM could I drop it, and I would not ask for anything in return.
Now if the price was lower, and I could drop it as an immediate(preferable), swift, or free action I might use it, but right now the rules say you need a standard action to drop it.
