I nearly considered making an actual New Year's resolution to read more, but quickly came to my senses....

Scarab Sages

I think, in the long run, I like having a stack of unread books because it means I always have something to read. And pretty much every book in the stack is something from an author I know, and whose work I enjoy.

This is, in part, due to my irrational fear of one day running out of authors whose works I enjoy but haven't read yet. In my own brain, this is a very real possibility sometimes, especially as writer's get older, retire, and/or pass away.

And I know some people will say that there are always new writers coming around. That, however, is part of my problem. I have an inherent prejudice against younger writers (younger than me, anyway). Is that irrational? Yes. Do I care that other people find it irrational? F*~# no. I just find it easier to relate to, and not be annoyed by, the writings of people close to or above my own age.

Not to mention, today's youth are a bunch of punkass b+%*+es.

Scarab Sages

I should write a f&@+ing book.

Deep Self-Philosophy, by Aberzombie

Scarab Sages

Or something like that.

Scarab Sages

Maybe a better title would be Deep Thoughts from a Withered Old A$&#+%*.

Scarab Sages

In preparation for the final season of Black Sails, I found Starz replaying the older episodes, including all of Season 1. Otherwise known as the only season I've never seen.

Needless to say, my DVR has been put to work.

'Tis Friday, but is it a Happy Friday? That remains to be seen.

Scarab Sages

It is, at the very least, a happier Friday than I had hoped for.

So....We had this beeping noise upstairs. Finally locate it, and it's this white AT&T box sitting within a junction box in an upstairs closet. The modem is also in this closet, and ties in via wiring to ports in the junction box.

Anyway, the white box is beeping, and a light indicates it's the battery needing replacement. So I chat with an AT&T rep online about getting the battery fixed or replaced (since it's hard to connect over the phone on even the best of days), and she says "Oh, we don't sell that anymore, I'll send you a new modem, with instructions on how to install it yourself". After making sure I wouldn't be charged if their instructions weren't clear enough to do the install (because generic instructions cannot account for each individual tech's install shenanigans), I say ok.

So I get the new box, and it's just a new modem. It will, in no way, replace or repair the item that is actually causing the problem. That item - the white box) has a single, hard-wired line coming out of the back and going into the wall. I cannot, in any way, discern where (or if) it ties into the modem she sent me a replacement for.

So now I have a tech coming out to see (and hopefully resolve) the issue first hand, which is what I was going for in the first place.

On the plus side, that annoying beeping can be reset to not occur for 24 hours.

Scarab Sages

I think the lesson is: Customer Service people who just answer phones and/or chat online should really stop trying everything they can to avoid sending a tech out, especially if they don't know what they're talking about. I'd say a good estimate is 9 times out of 10 that a problem doesn't get solved until someone comes out and actually stares it in the proverbial face.

Scarab Sages

Of course, I understand why they do it. It's cheaper to try and solve a problem via just talking about it and punching in data on a computer, than to actually put "boots on the ground" so to speak.

The downside is you run the risk of increasingly negative customer service reviews.

Baby girl just climbed the stairs back up to her room, crying. Why, you may ask? Because we told her she couldn't have ice cream for breakfast.

Scarab Sages

And...now she's calmed down again, after getting a hug and some soothing words from daddy.

Huzzah! I am the good cop this time!

Scarab Sages

The boy woke me up at 1:30 this morning. He had a nightmare and didn't want to sleep in his room.

I knew what he wanted...to come sleep in the bed with the wife and I.

F%~& that shit. I made the little turd climb right back in his own damn bed. Of course, I did reassure him there was nothing to worry about, and that when he went back to sleep, he should decide to have a good dream.

Scarab Sages

And, unlike my wife, I didn't bother asking him what his scary dream was about, mostly because I knew it would be something weird...along the lines of "I was on the playground eating graham crackers, and a Pterodactyl came along and ate all my crackers".

Yes. He has had that nightmare before.

Scarab Sages

In other news, I may try and get some much needed yard work done this weekend.

Very sad to hear that Ringling Brothers Circus is going to close down after 146 years. I was hoping I might be able to get the kids to one last show, but it seems the remaining ones are all going to be in the Northeast and East Coast states.

Scarab Sages

And now I want to get my kids to the zoo.

Scarab Sages

Just noticed a sad violation of grammar in a Wikipedia article, something so basic the author(s) of the article should be ashamed.

Scarab Sages

Makes me wonder just how many other errors their are. Still, given how massive an undertaking it is, I can perhaps give them some leeway.

Yeah I'm wondering if I should go just because it'll likely be the last time there will be a circus. At least in that configuration.

Scarab Sages

Do eet!

Scarab Sages

Not my circus. Not my monkeys.

Dropping the kids off at daycare today, I noticed a young lady standing by one of the teachers and crying. She was crying because the teacher was holding her baby, whom she was dropping off for the first time. I recall my wife acting the same way when we dropped the boy off for the first time ever, lo those many years ago. I think she cried on his first day of kindergarten as well.

Scarab Sages

As for me, I'm 90% certain my tear ducts are barely operable, and then only when I'm chopping onions.

Scarab Sages

Yesterday, for the first time in a long while, we made red beans and rice with leftover smoked bacon and pork loin. It was delicious.

Scarab Sages

And I even got to demonstrate a (very small) bit of manly toughness for the boy (he was home with a cough and slight fever). I accidently scraped my knuckles on the bottom edge of a kitchen cabinet and drew some blood. Finished up what I was doing before applying the meager first aid.

Scarab Sages

I think it important to toughen him up a bit. Mostly by telling him to "shake it off" or "man up" when he bonks. As long as he isn't bleeding, unconscious, or unable to move an appendage, he should be good to go.

Scarab Sages

I'm also fond of the phrase "suck it up, buttercup".

Scarab Sages

As well as "Life's not fair".

That's a recent addition to the lexicon. Not that I've never used it, but that I'm finding myself using it more frequently where the boy is concerned.

Scarab Sages

I've been working my way through Reaper's Eye. Good book. It's nice to see an old school author I know and respect writing for Pathfinder.

Scarab Sages

On that note, on those occasions when I've got a bit of downtime and the kids are around (especially on the weekends), I've resolved to spend less time on the phone/computer and more time reading.

Scarab Sages

Although, in my defense, sometimes I'm reading while on the phone/computer.

Scarab Sages

Another rainy day. I look forward to some eventual sunshine. At least I got my yard work done a few days ago, before the sky water commenced to falling.

Scarab Sages

I'm hoping to take my kids to the zoo soonish. Definitely before the weather turns to balls ass hot again.

Scarab Sages

My boy was apparently given two Pokémon cards by one of his friends (who henceforth shall be known as "that little f+*%er") at school. So now I guess I'll have to get him some more cards (when he does something worthy of a reward or otherwise earns them). I suppose I'll also have to learn how to play, so I can teach him.

Scarab Sages

Mother f*@+er! Son of a B~#~@! Goddamnit! Shit!

Scarab Sages

Happy Friday to one and all!! We've got a bit more rain today, but otherwise things seem glorious!

Scarab Sages

I finally finished reading Reaper's Eye. Very entertaining story, with some interesting characters.

The editing was, however, piss poor. Lot's of words that seem to have not been removed when they should have been. I've seen it before in other PF products, but this was one of the most extensive occurrences.

I have loaded my kindle with Cthulhu anthologies since I'll be bus driving today. The light screen works well when stuck on a dark bus

Scarab Sages

Huzzah! My boy has a Kindle, although he mostly uses his for games and videos.

Yeah I'm trying to buy books on it. I don't want to have another episode of 'lose my library'

Scarab Sages

Some little rat bastard f%&@ hat with a death wish created a fake facebook account with my mom's profile information. Thankfully, the jacknut was stupid enough to use it to message my cousin about investments. My cousin then informed me about it. Didn't take long to find the fake account and report it.

Thankfully, it seems the facebook powers that be jumped right on that shit. Unfortunately, they cut me out of it and started communicating directly with my mother, who knows jack and shit about what to do. I love her, but she's not what we'd call technically literate.

Scarab Sages

After a mostly bright, sunshiny Friday, followed by a thunderously rainy night, it's looking like we're going to get a break from the rain.

Thank the gods! My poor lawn was saturated.

Scarab Sages

Made it through the season two finale of Black Sails last night. That's one of my favorite episodes, when Flint and company open a big can of whup ass on Charles Town.

Scarab Sages

And....now I have found myself asking the question...

"Why do you have those boots on your hands?"

Scarab Sages

I realized the other day, I have a PF Tales novel I cannot recall ever having read. I may not have.

Scarab Sages

Apparently, per the rules, each player needs 60 cards to fight a Pokémon battle.

Well, shit.

Scarab Sages

In other news, it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood.
