I may have already whispered my cover artist requests into James Sutter's ear. :)
I'm sure whoever does it will do a fantastic job!
Relatedly, I just spent a week with family, and several conversations went like this:
Dad: I thought you were supposed to be doing work while you're here.
Me: I am! Playing with the dog is totally research!

I think the dire apple needs:
Special Qualities: Cyanide Seeds (Ex): Eating a dire appl or attacking with a bite attack subjects the consumer to cyanide poison.
Hmmm... no. If it was a dire bitter almond, maybe. The dire apples are vicious creatures that happen to have no attacks, but they think REALLY wicked thoughts about people nearby. If they smash someone by falling on them, they rejoice all the way inside their cores.

Apple seeds actually do contain cyanide, though you'd need to eat roughly 10,000 of them to get a lethal dose.

I actually first learned the "apple seeds have cyanide" factoid from an animated episode of G.I.Joe (episode #128, "The Germ").

With the days cooling and the nights growing longer, can it be any wonder that the Dire Apples are beginning to stalk the night?

So much love for this rendering of a Dire Apple!! I would NOT want to face a bushel of these in a dark alley...
