Rhino as a paladin mount?

Advice

I have a 5th level human female Paladin and want a unique, ballsy mount for my Divine Bond. I will be using the animal more as a fighting partner than a mount. Any problems with this? Also, if you can think of a flying mount that would be appropriate at my current level, please feel free to recommend it.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

A rhino mount would be awesome!

It'd require GM approval, but rhino sounds pretty awesome, yeah.

And for a medium sized Paladin, I don't think there are any flying mounts at 5th, though there are several you could grab at 7th level with GM approval (Roc and Pteranodon leap to mind).

I'd love the roc but knew it was out of reach at my level. The rhino sounded to me like a great option for bad-assery, particularly for a female character. :)

Poachers might be a problem.

Park your rhino outside an inn, the next morning one dead rhino missing a horn.

There are rules for rhinoceros companions and a Paladin's Mount functions as a Druid's Animal Companion. It would require GM approval as it isn't listed as a mount in the Paladin class, but it should work fine.

The big issue is that you would be unable to ride it as it will be Medium at 5th level, not becoming large until 7th.

There was a huge thread about if a medium person could ride a medium mount, and small pc a small mount. I think its implied, that pc's have to ride a mount one size category larger but I don't know if its stated in the rules.

Just for the fun of it, if I were your GM, I would give your Rhino the personality of Rhino from the movie Bolt.

If you haven't seen the movie, here is a link.

Think of your paladin as bolt, and your rhino as rhino. Very funny. :D

You can find a battle-ready "War Rhinocerous" in this book.

As I said earlier, the animal will be used as a fighting companion more than an actual riding mount, so this is all good. I'm really beginning to like the whole idea for both flavor and function.

Might be easier to build the pc as a cavalier with the beast rider archtype. But as long as the gm allows it as a mount for your paladin, no one can say different.

According to the Animal Archives player companion, you can purchase a rhino mount for 1,000 gp or 1,500 gp for a combat trained rhino (p. 14).

My question would be that on a mounted charge with a lance, could the rhino also get a gore attack on the target of the charge (if in range)?

People who annoy Animal Companions die messy deaths. As, indeed, do real people who try to mess with rhinoceri without high powered rifles and a fair distance between them and the creatures.

Yes. They could.

I would think it should be more of a trample attack than a gore attack. Either way, it is going to hurt.

Sczarni

Depending on the feats taken, the rhino could do a trample during a charge. My question was more based on the end of a mounted charge while riding the rhino. Basically, if both the rider (with a lance) and the rhino (with its horn) attack at the end of a mounted charge.

I think it's a great idea, as long as you say, "I got your unicorn RIGHT HERE" once in game.

I once had a rhino animal companion that I told everyone was my unicorn. He was a half orc and they didn't get purtty unicorns like the elves did.

Should I use the standard as is found here:

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/animals/rhinoceros

or use the Starting Statistics stats block and level it up to 5th level? Not sure which way to go about this, and want it to be legal (not broken).

Advice?

Also, at what HD would its size change from Medium to Large, etc?

Scarab Sages

Use the Starting statistics at http://paizo.com/prd/monsters/rhinoceros.html and level it up to 5th level.

It will become large per the level 7 advancement.

Thanks much. That's exactly what I needed to know.
