cost of item

Rules Questions

I was wondering what a belt of mighty strength +8, dwarf only would cost.

(Mighty Strength from DoG pg 23)

I am coming up with 64000 gp, but not sure how much a specific race only restriction would give.

Generally speaking, a stat item only goes as high as +6.

Usually speaking adding something as restrictive as a class reduces price by 30%. I imagine the same would apply to race. I would like to point out however that such things needs DM approval and I would caution against such price reduction because it is simply a convenient way for a PC to limit the price while gaining non of the bad effects.

It costs whatever your DM says it costs. The guidelines are guidelines. And like Lifat said, I wouldn't allow a price reduction based on a limitation that doesn't make things any harder for a PC.

I'm back to add that in 3.0 epic level handbook, the general rule was that anything beyond +6 enhancement bonus to a stat was considered epic, and that the price should have a multiplier of 10 meaning that said item with +8 would cost 640000 instead of 64000... I know that this is a different system so you can't simply copy paste the rules, but pathfinder has the same +6 limit. I just wanted to illustrate how a related system would handle it.

I believe the usual way to handle this is to apply the price reduction for class or race restrictions only to the sale price, not the crafting price.

It's just as difficult and expensive to make a Belt of Strength that only works for dwarves as one that works for everyone, but since fewer people will find it useful the market value is lower.

Indeed, you shouldn't get a price reduction for restricting an item to only your race. A restriction that doesn't hinder you isn't a restriction.

The restriction discount is more for GM created items that the players can't use.

If you want to create an item only you (or your class/race) can use, then there is no discount. There should even be a price increase because it is a feature not a limiter.

This could go 1 of 2 ways... both of which is open to DM fiat.

1)follow the normal creation formula example of "Ability bonus (enhancement) Bonus squared × 1,000 gp Belt of incredible dexterity +2" which indeed comes out to 64,000gp. This seems too cheap for my taste, however, so...

2)since this is based on an obscure spell only granted to certain dwarven clerics, I'd use this formula "Use-activated or continuous Spell level × caster level × 2,000 gp2 If the duration of the spell is 1 minute/level, multiply the cost by 2" instead. which brings it up to a cost of 112,000gp (4th lvl spell x caster lvl 7 x 2000gp x 2(1 minute/lvl duration)). and add "creator must be a dwarf" to the construction requirements.

Both formulas can be found on Table: Estimating Magic Item Gold Piece Values in the PRD. Hope this helps.

I want to add, I didn't pay close enough attention earlier because I had thought he was referring to the Belt of Giant Strength and didn't realize he was talking about using a Dwarf only cleric spell.

Remember folks, the pricing rules also specify that you should price items by comparing them to like items first.

Magic Item Gold Piece Values

Many factors must be considered when determining the price of new magic items. The easiest way to come up with a price is to compare the new item to an item that is already priced, using that price as a guide. Otherwise, use the guidelines summarized on Table: Estimating Magic Item Gold Piece Values.

Since we already have an item that does almost exactly this we should look at it first. The first thing to note is that permanent stat effect bonuses on items do not exceed +6. So, allowing a +8 is out of the question. Then, we look at the Belt of Giant Strength +6, which costs 36,000 gp (18,000 to craft).

Now, this doesn't give you want.

So, if you wanted to get the actual +8 to strength we have to go about this from a different perspective. You can't get a permanent +8, but you can craft an item that casts the spell for you.

For 5 charges per day, lasting 7 minutes per use, would cost 112,000 gp. Which is the same price someone else noted above.
