Divine defender ability

Rules Questions

"At 3rd level, a divine defender can spend one use of her lay on hands ability as a standard action to grant all ADJACENT ALLIES (including paladins) a bonus. At 3rd level, ADJACENT ALLIES receive a +1 sacred bonus to their AC and CMD and on their saving throws. These bonuses last for a number of rounds equal to the divine defender’s Charisma modifier. At 9th level and 15th level, this bonus increases by +1. At 6th level, these bonuses are granted to ALL ALLIES within 10 feet, and ALLIES that are at fewer than 0 hit points within this area are automatically stabilized. At 12th level, these bonuses are granted to ALL ALLIES within 15 feet, and ALLIES within this area are immune to bleed damage. At 18th level, these bonuses are granted to ALL ALLIES within 20 feet, and ALLIES within this area gain a 25% chance to negate any sneak attack or critical hit scored against them."

Does this power work on the divine defender or just their allies?

Allies include yourself, unless it makes no sense.

Like being adjacent to yourself? This ability specifically works on adjacent allies, not allies. It is impossible for a erson to be adjacent to themselves.

Strict RAW? Levels 1-5, you are not included. Levels 6-20, you are, for that very reason.

RAI? Probably all the way one way or the other. Not sure which.

RAW? RAI?

RAW is "Rules as Written," meaning a literal interpretation of how the rules are current written. RAI is "Rules as Intended" meaning what the developers intended for the rule to do (this is usually speculation only).

Thank you. I am running my first game on rpol and the question has come up.

FAQ/Errata

Do you count as your own ally?

You count as your own ally unless otherwise stated or if doing so would make no sense or be impossible. Thus, "your allies" almost always means the same as "you and your allies."

@OP: Yes. Even thought it says "adjacent", unless specifically stated otherwise, it affects the paladin.
