Charging down steep slopes.

Rules Questions

I came across this trait: hill fighter.

Now I'm wondering, what exactly are the normal acrobatics rules for charging down a steep slope?

Acrobatics

Quote:

Acrobatics Modifiers DC Modifier

Slightly obstructed (gravel, sand) +2
Severely obstructed (cavern, rubble) +5
Slightly slippery (wet) +2
Severely slippery (icy) +5
Slightly sloped (<45°) +2
Severely sloped (>45°) +5
Slightly unsteady (boat in rough water) +2
Moderately unsteady (boat in a storm) +5
Severely unsteady (earthquake) +10
Move at full speed on narrow or uneven surfaces +5*

Assuming no other contributing factors, it would be a DC 5 to charge (up or down) a severely steep slope. Though I think charging up might count as rough terrain or might otherwise inhibit movement, so I don't think you could actually charge up it. I'm not sure if there is a specific ruling on that.

But acrobatics also has this:

Quote:
* No Acrobatics check is needed to move across these surfaces unless the modifiers to the surface (below) increase the DC to 10 or higher

So if the DC is only 5, you wouldn't need to make a check in the first place?

That line applies only to the chart which it came from, which refers only to width of a surface you are trying to cross.

They are basically giving you a free pass to cross narrow surfaces that are at least 1 ft wide, so long as nothing else makes the surface more difficult to cross.

Also, if you move your full movement speed or further on the charge (that is if you charge 30ft or more) you should probably also apply another +5 for that penalty. So assuming you charge at least 30ft, it would be a DC 10.

Characters running or charging downhill (moving to an adjacent square of lower elevation) must succeed on a DC 10 Acrobatics check upon entering the first steep slope square.
