too much like another party member?

Advice

Hi,
I built a slayer my first Pathfinder character. Problem is he is almost identical to another players ranger. Same race but different backgrounds. But mechanically we are as far as I can see the same. I even tried to make him different by using a sword & shield rather than an archer like he is. My only skill he does not have is disarm device and I'm not very good at it.

We haven't started play yet. Should I ask the gm if I can switch classes before we start? Should I wait a couple levels to see if we start looking different? Multiclass after a certain level? I just don't want to play a clone.
Thanks
Karl

If you have another build idea in mind, then ask the GM if you can switch. Otherwise, I would chat with the other player about not only being similar, but using each other as Teamwork Feat buddies. Two archers hitting from different sides can be a serious problem. If the two of you pick the right feat chains, especially with the same teamwork feats, you guys could get real scary, real fast. Just something to think about.

A character isnt a lump of numbers and words on a page. A character is a living, breathing thing that acts through you.

Sword vs Bow is different enough mechanically, as are the ranks you'll put into different skills as you level, but that doesn't matter. What does your character strive for? Why are they adventuring? How did they get the abilities they use? The story is the important part your character, the numbers are a means to an end.

We're working hard to avoid similar feats. We created our characters and concepts seperately but still wound up nearly the same. I'm thinking either switching to barb or get to third level then switch.

Very true and I have been telling myself that. Our back story is as different as possible. As is our motivations. Perhaps I just like making characters or I have 'buyer's remorse' now that I've settled. I'll probably stick it out and see what happens. Worst comes to worst I can always swich to a compatible class later.

If it's your first character your DM should be willing to do some retconning, or if you play a couple sessions and truly find that you're uncomfortable with your character he/she should be willing to have your old character step out and the new one step in ("I found I am not suited for this lifestyle", "I found a better offer for my services", or "In a burst of light XXX disappears and when the dust settles you see YYY standing there")

Have you looked close and compared the Slayer to the Ranger?
Where are your free feats?
Where is your Animal Companion?
Where are your Spells?
Where are your favored terrains?

It sure looks to me like you are not a ranger. Are you doing Two weapon fighting with that sword and Shield? If you were a ranger, that would be free feats, but as a slayer you will have to pay for that feat(s).

Of coarse the Ranger doesn't get sneak attack or Rogue Tricks. You are using a class that isn't complete yet, so who knows if they will let regular rogue tricks to be used by the Slayer. When the official ACG book comes out.

Here is another example:
In my group (or future group) we will have two magus characters. I will play the Bladebound type and my friend will play the Archer type. They are basically the same thing (Magus), but we have built them differently. I noticed he was playing one early on, but I said to heck with it. I want to play a Magus. So here I am with my Magus character.

Keep your Slayer and enjoy the fun.
