crane wing vs. a held charge

Rules Questions

This came up in a "my character could beat yours in a fight" argument me and a friend were having. Long story short they both come to a standstill by each making a single attack a round and the other one using crane wing to deflect it. One is a vital striking monk, the other is a magus with a monk dip.

If the magus has a spell such as frostbite cast and is holding charges, then would a charge be discharged every time either character used crane wing to deflect an attack?

Liberty's Edge

No, there is a FAQ about that.

Edit
Here it is:

New text added:
Update 5/29/13: If the attack is deflected, not only does the target take no damage, but any other effects (ability drain, negative levels, harmful conditions, and so on) associated with that attack do not occur. If the deflected attack is a touch spell or other effect that requires "holding the charge," the charge is not expended. For example, if a ghoul's claw attack is deflected, the target is not subject to the ghoul's paralysis ability from the attack. If a shocking grasp touch attack is deflected, the attacker is still "holding the charge." The Crane Wing feat will be updated in a future printing of Ultimate Combat to clarify these issues.

Link to FAQ? I'm terrible with searching for them...

Also, Crane Wing has changed, it doesn't automatically deflect an attack anymore. I'm pretty sure that would mess up this argument.

The best way, for the more recent FAQs, is to mark a post by the Pathfinder Design Team, go to their page and then search their posts.

That is what I did to find the quote above.

Were not using the new stupid wing set up. Its dumb and should never have been changed and this is a theory argument so not in pfs anyway. But thanks for the FAQ. This still doesn't end the who would win...thus continues the debate...

Although. That did answer the question about the touch attack. Thank you. Sorry he's so impolite.

FYI chaotic fighter is the one I'm having the debate with...

So...anyone got a way for this cycle to end that doesn't involve the vital strike monk getting a hit in on the magus?

Grand Lodge

One of them pulls out a ranged weapon.

Old age. Monk wins.

Grand Lodge

This is preposterous, as they both have multiple tactics.

Two PCs, who only use one tactic, ever?

Nobody does that.

You underestimate my hardheadedness, good sir.

The monk only has one tactic: vital strike and pure defense. The magus has much more, but all of them involve getting hit by the monk, something that will certainly drop his HP to 0 long before he can return the favor.

Grand Lodge

I feel like this isn't exactly a "rules question" anymore.

Er,... the magus casts a spell? There are a number of spells out there that don't require an attack roll.

As a public service:

1. Go to Google.
2. In the search bar, enter site:paizo.com/paizo/faq SEARCH TERM, where SEARCH TERM is replaced with whatever you're searching for. Since it's Google, you can use boolean operators like quotes to group words as phrases and such.
3. Click search.
4. Look through the returned links.

It's a bit cumbersome that the FAQ area doesn't have its own search but the above works just fine.

To the original topic: As others have mentioned, an attack deflected by Crane Wing counts as neither a hit nor a miss. It's a negated attack, meaning that no beneficiary abilities trigger for the attacker if they trigger off a successful hit.

The monk is just as much of a brick was when it come to saves as it is for ac. The even with a natural 1 it would make every save against the magus who did not take spell focus-mastery feat chain...

you beat the crane riposte by readying an attack and forcing the monk to move. your readied attack goes off before the monks ergo he is not fighting defensively yet and crane style cannot be active,

as an asside if he were using the ne version you csnnot stop him from using it with this tactic. but building characters around a single attack around....

Crane style, with the FAQ, can effect the use of Crane Riposte while fighting defensively, when the attacker misses the effected attack. (The one with bonus to AC)

yes but the op said they were not using the erratad crane style. so as i said if for some insane reason your entire combat styl is built round a single attack the way you beat crane style is making the person with crane style move and ysed readied actions. because you canot move and fight defensively.

Pull a ranged weapon? Cast spells? Summon stuff? Flurry for multiple strikes? Fly and laugh at the Monk? Use Arcane Mark to get a 2nd attack with your weapon?

So many possible different tactics...

If your one and only tactic is making a single melee strike every round, get used to (deservedly, IMO) losing battles.

puts on flame suit

I think this thread illustrates why the change to Crane Wing was good.
