Advice

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So at level 8 i finally have about 15k gold to spend.

Currently have a fortunate charm (re-roll skill/concentration check once per day), +1 cloak of resistance and +2 headband of int, a level 1 pearl of power and a ring of spell storing (5 levels).

I have craft wondrous item so that stretches my budget quite a bit if i can find the time to craft stuff (DM has a house rule, you cant craft if you are travelling, even if you are on a boat).

So i was thinking of getting :

+2 cloak of resistance - 1.5k

+4 headband of int - 6k

Gloves of healing (+5 to heal skill) - 1,250

That leaves me with about 6k gold left. Any suggestions? I was thinking a item that increased spellcraft alone would be good (and cheap) but i dont think theres one...

For the headband, what skill should i put in it, since i already have fly and most of my class skills maxed? I was thinking appraise would come in useful for selling loot and we dont have anyone who can do it.

How about cackling hag's blouse

Yea i thought about that, but the problem is the intimidate bonus isnt very useful, and cackle as a swift action isnt very useful now that misfortune lasts two rounds minimum...

How does it last 2 rounds minimum?

I just had a conversation like this with a witch player. Int boosters and hag blouse were the things we came up with. Is there anything else out there to boost a witch's hexes?

Ability focus and coven that's all I know.

Coven is iffy but it does say it effects hexes in the text. My idea for coven was leadership + the scar hex. Have all your followers take coven and scar, have them scar you then safely assist you up to a mile away. Warning this is extremely cheesy.

Another cheesy way to do the coven is to partner with a hex magus and have him be an aid another guy. If you go mythic it can get pretty dumb like up to +20 or so to your caster level.

Hmm, would ability focus affect all hexes or is it specific to each hex?

Specific hex, like slumber or evil eye.

Shadow Lodge

A decoy ring might save your life. Go invisible while withdrawing (only while being threatened) and create illusory duplicates of yourself running in different directions.

At 8th level misfortune lasts two rounds.

Hexing runes would enhance a hex, but i cant afford that at the moment and the spellcraft DC is too high to craft since im missing both the spell focus feat and the ward hex.

Unfortunately i cant afford the decoy ring at the moment...

Pearls of power never hurt. Also, if you can afford it, a +1 spell storing spiked gauntlet can be a useful thing to have in a pinch for a witch. Or you could save up for a Witching Gown.

Oh I had forgotten about this item, hexing doll.

For your int item, I'd either take stealth or a social skill (bluff, diplomacy or intimidate). Social skills are nice to have maxed because it lets you get involved in NPC interactions without having to fear the moment when your GM says 'make a bluff check' and you realize that your character couldn't bluff a blind mouse. Stealth is also regularly useful, and a skill you've probably neglected so far.

As for equipment: I'd rather get a lesser rod of extend than spend money on low level pearls of power, as your low level slots will be at least partially used for long(ish) duration buffs and doubling three buff spells for 3000 gold is in my opinion better than adding one spell slot for 1000, 4000 or 9000.

A ring of invisibility is also a rather excellent investment for any full caster, so you could save part of the money to put towards that. How useful saving money is depends on your GM though - if he/she follows wealth by level strictly it's better to spend all your money now as the money you earn for adventures goes up exponentially.

Oh yes i have a level 1 pearl of power too.

I dont think i will be able to hit any targets to take advantage of the spiked gauntlet...also isnt it a martial weapon?

Witching gown...ive looked at it, but its really expensive. It does 4 things mainly :

-Function as a +4 cloak of resistance (which costs 8k gp to craft compared to the nearly 18k of the gown)

-Add +4 to bluff, diplomacy and intimidate, only useful if you want to make a social character and have skill points in at least one of those (and another character isnt doing it already)

-Disguising clothes at will, mostly for RPing (have never had the need to do something like this in my current campaign)

-Spite with a 4th level or lower touch spell (dont even have any touch spells because hexes are superior)

Seems quite expensive for what you get...

Hexing doll : The problem with this is that its really hard to get the hair of a creature unless you can prepare ahead of time...you will never be able to use it in the typical "bump into enemy monster" encounter.

Intimidate might be useful for the headband...will have to double check what social skills the party has at the moment though. Havent really had the need to be stealthy so far though.

Lesser rod of extendd is a good call, it would allow me to double the healing on infernal healing.

We usually have lower wealth by level, but i think we might be catching up to our WBL with this latest pile of gold.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

Not sure what your familiar is, but if you are using it in combat, to UMD (if improved), or any way in which it might be endangered, check out Stone Familiar.

What's your build? (which feats, hexes, basic strategy)

Otherwise I'd suggest the same as others.
POP 1st.
Rod of Extend, Lesser.
Int Headband. (more skills, spells, and DC booster).
Cackling Hag's Blouse allows you to do something with your swifts and having that move action available is a big plus.
Stone Familiar...mostly if your GM likes to ice familiars.
Ring of Invis.
Wayfinder with a clear spindle Ioun Stone mounted (for the resonant effect).

Reach rod or persistent rod. Because bestow curse is just that fun.
