Playing as a Familiar

Homebrew and House Rules

Greetings,

In the RotR game I'm running, one of my party members- a wizard- just kicked the bucket. One option we're considering for him continuing with the adventure is that he starts playing as his Raven familiar, a little creature already established to have its own personality and everything.

Can anyone point me towards a Homebrew class for a familiar, or any rules for playing a familiar who's lost his master?

The game is Gestalt, so it will likely end up being Familiar Class/Something Else.

You can use this paragraph from Animal Archive as a guideline:

Quote:

Avians: Raptors such as eagles, hawks, and owls—as well as more bizarre fliers—tend to develop aloof, detached personalities, while smaller individuals are often more social and high-strung. Awakened avian animals keenly observe the world around them—often understanding it much better than their demure natures might imply— and are adept at inferring others' desires, motives, and intentions. These intelligent flyers are shrewdly calculating and opportunistic, especially when it comes to ensuring their own survival. Awakened birds can often be found high above a fracas, coldly deciding on the best course of action, and only entering a fray when it's in their best interest or that of their friends.

In combat, avian animals enjoy taking opponents by surprise, favoring training as rogues and ninjas, though they may also enjoy a bard's ability to soar above the fray and inspire with their songs and majestic screeches. In these capacities, the birds often use their winged stealth to their advantage, taking cover in trees and then striking quickly and silently. Awakened avian animals use their natural weapons, but often with a twist—devious awakened flyers have been known to drop smoke shot, chain shot, and even bombs on unsuspecting enemies.

Barring that, a Wisdom based spellcasting class would also do well. A raven cleric? Or a Druid?

He could just get a little side-quest as the Raven he is now, looking for a new master. Maybe even become the Familiar for a new Witch PC?

I suggest you let him be a wizard. A familiar that takes up the mantle of its dead Master sounds great to me. If it is a gestalt game slap a kensai magus on top and let it be the natural attack the little fella have.
Familiar is not a class so unless you want to make him weaker than the rest of the team he should have 2 Real classes.
A witch is also a great idea then he can have a familiar of his own:)
And of cause a summoner will allow him a shoulder to sit on again:)

Summoner with an edilon that looks exactly like the dead wizard. He's in denial.

Heh; nice ideas all round. Looks like we're going with giving the raven the Noble Raven race from the Noble Wild 3rd party sorucebook, and then gestalt in two other classes. Pondering ways to get around somatic components now.

Much thanks for all your suggestions, fellas.

I've pondered playing a familiar questing to ressurect a dead master.

As for somatic there are/or were feas to let a druid cast spells in wild shape so it can be done and who says the somatic geastures are the same for all races when several haw claws, talons, tentacles, wings etc. I'd say just handwave it as talon and wing geastures.

Maybe a bit trite, but having said familiar ascend into a tengu could be cool.

i dont know anything about nobel raven but if it isent to powerfull pehaps you just make him spend a feat on being able to cast with wings and talons instead of hands?
