As someone who was well aware of who the Mandarin was, since I'd been reading comics for forty years, the fact that the movie threw us that curve was more of a treat for *me* than it was for fans who had no idea who the Mandarin was in the comics.
I mean, what a shock that must have been for them, that some dude they'd never heard of wasn't who some other fans thought he was. Woo? I guess?
For me, 'though, it was new and exciting.
The parts of Iron Man 3 I didn't care for as much came at the ending, where Pepper got de-Extremis'd (I thought she could have been the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first super-powered woman), and Tony blew up all his suits (which we *know* that A) wasn't going to last because he's contracted for two more Avengers movies, and B) wasn't *all* of his suits, unless Rhodes and the President of the United States exploded in mid-air as well!). It seemed like an attempt to tie up the franchise with a bow, which didn't make sense, since the franchise wasn't actually done yet. Wait 'til it's dead before closing the box and throwing dirt on it, yeh?

Are you claiming none of the pre-release info mentioned the Mandarin?
No. If you read what I wrote, you'll note I quoted something that specifically did.
As to Irontruth: You mentioned how "marketing" built up some expectation. I don't see it, and I doubtless watched the same trailers as everyone else.
I did see sub-seminal sources build hype based on erroneous and unsubstantiated claims of what to expect. But nothing direct from Marvel did.
And back to thejeff, if what you are essentially upset with is that they didn't tell you what the story would be before you went to see it, then who can really argue against that point.
They left a lot in the dark... and I think they should have and it was good they did.
And to Kevin Mack: Yeah, Movie Bob did that breakdown well.

Honest Trailer's take on Iron Man 3...pretty much encapsulates all the problems my friends and I had with the movie after seeing it.
I basically consider the Iron Man sequels to be the weakest of the Marvel movies, and the Mandarin reveal was by far not the biggest problem with the movie, even if it was one that left a sour taste in my mouth.

I've been reading the Guardians of the Galaxy comic for a few years now and IMO, the movie was great. I like their more realistic take on the Nova corps - with them using a spacecraft and stuff - wondering if there will still be some "suited" gold helment or black helmet novas in the future! :)
My idea about how we'll see Power Helmeted Nova Corps, spoilers below:
I suspect that now that the Nova Corps has the "Power" Infinity Gem they'll use it to create the "Nova Force" and we'll see an iteration of the Nova Corps from the comics.

Actually all we know is Pepper was fixed...that might mean she still has the power but won't explode randomly.

The truly sad thing about IM3 is the fake mandarin as played by kingsley was the only good part of the movie. So not only is it a fake out disapointment but its also the only part worth watching in a bad movie.
As a non-reader, I can say that I enjoyed Iron Man 3, simply because RDJ is so good at the role of Tony Stark. There's a section in the middle with some stupid kid, and there's a needlessly over-the-top fight scene at the end that also ruins the plot (the why-didn't-he-use-the-army-of-robots-earlier thingie), but otherwise it was fun. Good action scenes, some really funny parts (the mandarin reveal included)... just a solid action movie.

I'm not telling you how you saw the movie. I'm telling you how I saw it. You're free to your opinion, I'm not saying you can't have it. But that means I also get to have mine.
For me, the plot twist failed and left a bad taste in my mouth. It reduced my enjoyment of the movie.

They can fly across country, independently form battle plans, fly so precisely they can dress people while they're falling, and coordinate a 12 way battle, but "pick up rock. Move rock" is too complicated for them?
I'm usually pretty forgiving with comic book decision making but this was just.. no.
Tony stark already has enough mental issues: you don't need to suddenly tack on panic attacks.

I thought Guardians was excellent. My favorite of the Marvel movies so far. Really looking forward to an Adam Warlock movie.
If Tony Stark himself wasn't going to do anything to defend himself, surely someone else would have - his challenge to the Manadarin was public. The U.S army, Pepper, Shield and numerous other parties with an interest in foiling a Mandarin attack and keeping Tony alive would have some sort of defense going.

It was PTSD, and it wasn't "sudden" it was the result of a near death experience that occurred during a violent alien invasion. A man might have some stuff to deal with after an experience like that. Some people suffer PTSD after a Car Accident, Tony crashed to Earth after almost getting trapped on the wrong end of a wormhole. He has flashbacks and heightened sensitivity when his adrenaline spikes. I'm glad they dealt with the fallout from Avengers and reminded us that Tony is a "man in a can", and more than that when he sets his mind to a problem.

This movie bored me to tears, I didn't think it was good anything. Sure production value was nice and RDJ is a fine actor, the execution just left a mediocre product. It wasn't a bad movie but it wasn't a good one either. I am glad I waited for cable.

I have to reluctantly agree. None of the Marvel movies are "baaaad", but this one is just "eeeesh"

It wasn't the PTSD I had a problem with, it was how it manifested. The panic attacks seemed a little... overt? Hokey? Over done? and random.
You could have shown the same thing with tony getting flash backs and drinking till they faded, or doing something incredibly egomaniacal and saying "Hey, if the next nuclear bomb i carry to save the world DOES blow up, I want people talking about my legacy for the next thousand years.. minimum."

Do you know anyone suffering from PTSD? I do. And it manifests pretty much like it did with Tony. Panic attacks. Sometimes we walk down the street and a car exhaust backfires. He's behind cover in seconds.

Back to Guardians for a moment...
I was digging around previous posts and I found this in the Agents of SHIELD thread... possibly WAY OFF TOPIC for the thread and I'm not sure how it got there...
but on May 29 this happened:
LazarX wrote:... I'm fairly sure the movie [GotG] is going to be a failure on the scale of the Green Lantern movie, both in terms of critical reception and at the box office...[snip]
Yeah, it's the riskiest of Marvel Cinematic Universe films thus far, no question. But their foundation is solid and GotG would have to be Howard the Duck to do as bad as Green Lantern did...
And just find that really really funny now. ^_^

Wow! how insane is that as a coincidence?
You know what would be even better: if they made Howard the Duck again and it beats Green Lantern! :)

I really do not think that it would be that hard to do.

Definitely too much power for one person.. how about 100 ?
Just think of Nova suits powered by the power gem like the hydra weapons were powered by the space gem. As a add on, now that we know for sure the tesseract is the space stone would that mean that all the people killed by hydra weapons just teleported them somewhere else in space and didn't kill them.

True but they could have been teleported to a habitable planet. If they lived think of the storytelling opportunities Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. and Agent Carter could have with it. Just think if they were sent to the blue area of the moon, Hydra on the moon led by Red Skull.

I realize this is TOTALLY not the point, but I'm trying to remember the last time I've heard a car backfire.
To put it a different way...I still hide out in my darkened apartment every Fourth of July because the fireworks sometimes sound to much like artillery in the distance, small arms fire up close and mortar fire. It aint fun. And it's supposed to be my holiday.

Given the % of the universe that isn't inimical to human life I don't think there's much difference.
Most of space is empty
Most of the stuff that isn't empty is searing hot hydrogen
Most of the planets will kill you anyway
And even on earth you need to be within 30 feet of the surface, with only 1 direction for ANY leeway.

Well, having seen it for the third time last night, I can confirm that it wasn't just the wine making me cry... in fact now I just start earlier each time because I know it's coming.
So, the Infinity Stones so far...
Tesseract = Space (apparently confirmed?)
Loki Pokey Stick = Mind? (Only thing that really makes sense)
Stone from GotG = Power? (Has this been confirmed? It does make sense, just curious as to if there's an official comment)
What's the Aether from Thor 2? My initial guess was Space, except for the Tesseract being that. All the portal related anomalies that it caused and so on.

The Aether would be Reality.

Loki isn't exactly Thanos' b!!~!, here. He didn't have to get it from Thanos, nor does Thanos necessarily even need to know about it.
Though if he does actually have one, you'd think he'd have a bit more juice.
Nah, I prefer to think Loki's just being Loki, surviving on his wits, charms, and illusion magic.
