Magus using Metamagic Rods

I'm trying to figure out a way for a Magus to use Metamagic Rods while in combat.

Since a Magus has to have a free hand as part of spell combat and the other hand holding the weapon, I can't figure out a way to use a metamagic rod.
Is there a way, and if so, how?

If this isn't for PFS and your GM is willing to talk homebrew, one thing I had made for my player was an enchantment to allow his weapon to 'store' the essence of a metamagic rod in the blade. It was +1 enhancement bonus to the weapon, and took 24 hours to attune to the energy. You could swap out which rod you wanted, but the 24 hours made it so you couldn't just swap them out all the time. Then you could use your sword as the metamagic rod.

I've seen people mention Hexcrafter magi with the prehensile hair hex as well, although I'm not entirely convinced that works RAW -- I could see it either way.
