I thought of a system I think will be needed for effective RP.
As some may know I write, mostly stories. But some of what I write is poetry.
Now one of the things poets do is perform. Others I know will wish to perform as well. And leaders will wish to orate at times.
It takes time to type out a long, well-thought speech. It takes time to craft a well written tale. And clerics will need to be able to deliver sermons without getting a cramp from the keyboard or mistyping /sit.
So one thing the UI and chatbox must be able to do is accept pasted text we copy from notepad or whatever.
I think this will be very much desired soon after EE, or OE at the latest.
After all how otherwise will I be able to spam my spiritual drivel?

Copy-paste into chat can be a blessing and a curse. Not having it could mean a chore for legitimate players; having it puts tools into the hands of spammers. Always tradeoffs, though as a completely biased person who is sometimes annoyed at my inability to copy/paste in games, I do think this one would be worth the cost.

Gold spammers could set up a macro that retypes their advert every time with the press of a button, instead of copy-pasting it.
Stopping gold spammers is not a strong argument against copy paste functionality.
Agree. Not to compare the two uses, but both types of people (RPers and gold spammers) are motivated enough to keep doing what they do with or without copy/paste. I see no reason to penalize RPers (or long-winded non-RPers) when gold spammers will spam regardless.

I love this idea, despite the potential for non-RP abuse!
In developing Deianira's background, I discovered she originally trained as a bard (she was very insistent on this point), so I've been writing song lyrics as a sort of writing exercise to get inside her head. I'd love to be able at some future date to perform them without the extensive typing involved.

I was talking moreso about annoying spam not related to goldspammers. For example, if someone tells you something and you ignore it, so they copy/paste it a dozen times in all caps at you. Also buy/sell spam on trade channels. I realize that removing copy/paste doesn't stop people from being a$#hats or stop them from spamming trade or other channels, but copy/paste does help them in their variously annoying ventures.

Most MMOs I play/played support CTRL+V to paste text into the chat window. And yet others allow the CTRL+Up or ALT+Up combo to repost a previous statement. Despite that, I see very little of the behaviors that folks seem afraid of here popping up in those environments. Outside of Gold Spammers who will, if they do not have CTRL+V, just create macros to type for them in game.
I would personally view it as fairly quaint if pasting is not allowed. Now... copying text out of the chat window itself, that would be something not many games support, which gets annoying when your buddies try sending you links in your guild chats.

I would love to have only local channels with settlement/company channels being able to be global.
However i think that when having local channels it should be impossible to see who is in that channel, otherwise you end up being able to monitor the chat to see who is in an area.
Second this. It is one of the problems with Eve local chat and should be got rid of.

I'm with you on that.

Multicolor could be useful for performers but I doubt I would use it for RP. I could be shortsighted though. Multicolor chat might be very useful to distinguish various levels of command when they give orders in text, if anyone does.
It would be great, IMO, if they could limit how far your texting travels though. Chat might actually be a practical medium of communication instead of listening to people and being heard across the map.

The local chat issue is finding a happy medium for the realistic distance. Too powerful, and you have people screaming their message across a zone wide area. Too little, and you have people needing to use things like communication crystals from UO (think magic walkie talkies) to project people's voices past the width of your monitor. I remember having community events/meetings in buildings wider than your monitor's width could show at a time, and needing to have several sets of com. crystals so that everyone present could hear what was being said.
Originally UO didn't even have chat channels, and some RPers find RPing in a channel to be a separate activity than really RPing with your in-game character. I know I don't take tells or any channel talk as being in-character since most of my characters aren't telepathic. Personally, I've always used RP channels as a way to find other RPers, not to actually RP in. When I'm in-game, I want to interact as my toon. If I want to chat RP, I would more likely hop on TS. Nothing wrong if you like it the other way around...just not my gig.

What If:
1) Only local chat accepted Paste, and
2) Only accepted one line at a time, and
3) Accepted it at slightly lower than average typing speed.
That wouldn't impact the target (since macros are indistinguishable from typing quickly, and limiting typing speed is a Bad Idea), but it would impact the casual user.
