Lini the Druid, reveal animal / play ally?

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Hi all,

Our Druid recently acquired the Cat ally which you can reveal to add 2 to a check to recharge a spell.

So the question is: can she use the cards +2 power and then use that same ally to activate her Druid power of adding another +d4+2 (it's been upgraded) for a total of divine+d4+4?

Does it make any difference if she has a 2nd animal ally to reveal to activate her power?

Thanks,

Twak

Darn, the forum ate my response.

Yes, you can use the reveal power from the card AND the reveal power from Lini's character power with the Cat as your animal ally.

Note that you could also use Lini's reveal power (powering it with the Cat) and then use a discard power from that same card, as long as you did it in that order.

Having a second animal ally to reveal to activate her power makes no difference in the case that you're asking about.

I second that. In the one case she is using her power, in the other case she is playing the card. When she uses her power she has not played that card, so she can still play an ally and not break the rule limiting checks to 1 card of each type by each player per check.

Another related question - can I use Lini's Power to reveal multiple animal allies to get multiple 1d4 bonuses?

As to my understanding revealing isn't playing so this does not conflict with the play 1 card of each type per player per check...

I'm guessing I can't though I can find the justification for it.

No. Each character may only activate each power once during a check. So you can only use her power to get 1 additional d4.

Here is the citation from the rulebook for my comment above

I think the brake down is that you are not playing the ally just revealing it.

I go with Tyler Beck on this one. If you reveal, the play you should be fine.

You're not playing two allies or playing using the druid power twice, so I think you're ok.

I was agreeing with Tyler Beck too. My "no" comment was in response to the second question about using Lini's power for 2d4 on a check.

Sorry to disagree, but according to page 9 Revealing a card is one of the ways of playing it. So, once you have revealed an Ally card, you have played a card of that type.

Yes, but revealing (or doing anything else) to a card to fulfill the requirement of a different card is not considered to be playing it. You are only playing a card when you use a power of that card. You can reveal an animal card to play it, then reveal the same card to fulfill the requirement of Lini's power; or you can do it in the opposite order. The point is that revealed cards never leave your hand, and you are only actually playing the animal once.

Ah. I misunderstood f_y_m to say that revealing a card didn't count as playing it. Disregard my previous post.

It's a good little combo when it happens.

Too good to be true.

I think the question behind this discussion is:
Is it alowwed (for Lini) to use her power (revealing an ally with an animal trait to get 1d4+x) mutiple times per check if she has more than one animal allies in her hand.

Is there any written rule verifying or falsifying this "hypothesis" that a player is allowed to use the power multiple times per check?

If it would be true, then it would be really cool.
Powerful little Lini....
