A friend of mine is starting up a new campaign and he wants us to make up some PCs. He has said it will be a low magic campaign (so i'm thinking more middle ages than middle earth). He shot down my alchemist and gunslinger ideas already because he doesn't like the feel(damn, I really want to try those classes one day) and warned us that magical mounts (paladin) and sparkling gear won't be just appearing.
So, it is looking like a definite martial slant will be the direction to take. He is comfortable with the core rulebook (he is new to pathfinder but has played D&D over the years) and may let some PC's and things slide in from APG, UC, but likely not UM (so no magus).
I would have taken a rogue but i believe somebody already has one. I think the party so far stands at a rogue, cleric, bard, and ranger (but ranger is unconfirmed). I've played a monk a few times before and do not really want a fighter or barbarian. Getting picky, I know.
I'm leaning towards either a human pally (never played one before - could be fun) or a ranger (urban) BUT I am open to other ideas (but as I said, 'magicky' PCs will be a tough sell, I think). Just not sure which direction to go. Don't know if the setting is Golarion or homebrew, let alone where we would be starting off in the world.
To those whom have played both, either, or just want to weigh in - send me your thoughts. thx

@ Pan - not sure of the campaign details yet. I would imagine this GM would have a mix. Never tried cavalier - that could work ....
@Pupsocket - I like that line of thinking. I will have to check on the full caster possibility. I'm fine if I can't buy scrolls etc... as long as I can research.
@darkwarriorkarg - that was my line of thinking with the paladin. I need to find out if the campaign is going to have piles of evil outsiders, undead etc... for that great smite.

I note that 3 of 4 of the existing party are spell casters. Furthermore, the Cleric is a full spell caster and the Bard a 3/4 caster. Yet 'magicky' PCs are a tough sell. I'm confused. I'd speak with the GM some more and find out what he/she really wants.
Regardless, with that party composition it seems a Paladin would be a good fit. They will need a front line fighter.

If the Ranger actually goes as a Ranger, I would suggest a Sorcerer instead. With fixed spells known per lvl you will not be hit by the low wealth and your party can seriously need some 9th lvl arcane caster support.
A Human Arcane Sorcerer is probably the best choice, but a Human Dragonic Sorcerer with a focus on blasts and dazing spell or a gnome arcane sorcerer with a focus on illusion magic and shadow conjuration / evocation are going to be great choices too. Finally, a Sylvan sorcerer with boon companion will have access to any animal companion at her character lvl, making it a great choice with your team composition if the last player does not play a ranger. An Allosaurus is probably the best choice for a combat animal companion, although according to the setting he might not be available. In this case I would aim for a Big Cat. Even with a simple Wolf though you will bring a useful flanker to the table. With the Eldrich heritage feats you can take the arcane bloodline powers back anyway.

Oracle can make a fun tank or many other niches. Paladin is also an obvious fit, but make sure your GM is going to let you set your own code. Some are a bit overly traditional about what they consider proper Paladin behavior. Or Wizard would be perfectly useful. I am not sure what low magic means in this case, but it does appear to be a caster strong party.

How about a Druid? They are probably one of the most flexible classes in the game and their magic can thematically exist well in low fantasy settings. As full casters with wild shape, they are also not particularly dependent on gear. You don't need magic swords or armor when you can shapeshift into a tiger.

if Bard and Ranger are ok, you might want to look at Inquisitor. The casting part might not fit what he's looking for but they've got lots of fancy abilities that you can play as 'low magic' - he can look into the hearts of men and see the truth (stern gaze, cunning initiative, detect alignment), he is a monster-hunting expert so knows their weaknesses and how to best fight them (monster lore, judgment, bane), etc etc etc.
