Dragon Tiger Ox is Live!

Product Discussion

Dragon Tiger Ox
Our Wuxia/Ancient Chinese sourcebook for Pathfinder just went live this morning/last night at about 2 am.
It's got over 160 pages of martial arts goodness including over 130 new feats and about a dozen new martial arts styles.
This is our 2nd Kickstarter backed project and we would like to thank everyone who backed us on this fantastic book.
Backers should have a copy in their email and for those who didn't back us you can pick it up on DriveThruRPG .

have a question about one of the new races included in DTO- the Samebito. What exactly do these dudes look like, anyhow? Does anyone have a sketch? I'm guessing they mist have impressive jaws, based on the bite attack and Racial Feats, and I assume their skin is shark-like, but beyond that...

I can't wait to get home so I can check out the finished product.

Right, but bipedal how? do they stand like most humanoids, perpendicular to the ground, or more hunched-over, 45-degrees or so? What's their head-spine orientation like? Piscine creatures essentially have their primary sensory organs (sight, smell) in linear alignment with their spine, whereas humanoids have it set at a 90-degree angle. 'Bipedal' could mean a lot of different things to different folks :)

You got me, dude. Now I'm wondering the same thing. I just answered based off what little I know of Japanese mythology.

First off I love this book, and what it does for wuxia!!! The art is fabulous and the text is elegant, descriptive and clear.

*I love the previous class-dependent powers of the shifu at 1st level!!!

***If I have any criticism, it is twofold - first, there simply isn't enough art in this book - not all the classes and races (samebito and shishi, wolong) have a picture, which would be nice for those of us less grounded in wuxia or even eastern tropes. I guess if the Kickstarter had raised more money there might have been more art - there is definitely a lot of art in the items section, but even there I would like to have seen more….

The second regards layout - although the font and spacing are very clear I would have liked more obvious title/heading/banners - but I guess this is more a personal peeve, and the when one considers the general tone (scroll colored paper with watercolor mountains at the base) it really is entirely in keeping with the theme. :)

***Got a few observations for the Little Red Goblins:

* pp 67 - 72 - the Feats tables: The feats that are part of feat chains aren't that clear to see - they just seem to be out of alphabetical order until you scan the next column and see the previous feat is a prereq… Would be great if the later feats could be indented...

* page 96 - Cyclone Broadsword details its stats, but the description seems to be for the diamond thunderbolt rod:

"The wielder may spend 2 ki points as a standard action to cause a diamond thunderbolt rod to produce an immaterial glowing blade. " Am I missing something?

All in all, this really is a fantastic, in-depth and well researched book detailing many of the eastern wuxia tropes. Very glad to have been a supporter of LRGG, and look to do so again in the future!!!

As one of the editors on this wondrous work, should we take that as an 'official answer'? :)

Have to admit, I was not impressed with the images at the link you provided above, but after using Google-Fu on the name, some much cooler pictures showed up.

The street sharks joke isn't that far fetched. Unless they're rewriting how they traditionally look, this is typically what Samebito look like.

Samebito

yeah i was just joking around with that one ;P

Hey guys, we are doing a quick post launch update to clean up a few things. Thanks for a fantastic launch of this product!

Sambito:
Sambito stand 6-7 feet tall but have a hunched posture due to a natural slope of their spine that ends in a tail. A large fin sits atop their shoulders and helps give them a rounder appearance. They have humanoid limbs but much lankier and wider proportions and gruff shark’s skin that looks deceptively smooth. A large maw of sharp teeth separates two small eye sides set on either side of its head. Most have broad shoulders and hips that support their shark-head and cause them to have a heavy gait on land.

Change Log:

  • Adjust backdrop for sidebars.
  • Heading 4 now has a bolder appearance.
  • Minor heading adjustments on a few things.
  • Applied super scripts references to the sources of books.
  • Added a note on open game content at the end of the book
  • Fixed part of the attribution on Adventuring Classes: A Fistful of Denarii. (We had a copy/paste flub that attributed it to Rite)
  • The wolong table was missing for some reason. It's back now.
  • Add the title to the diamond-thunderbolt rod
  • Minor cosmetic changes.

OK, I cannot say that this product's version of a samebito is the same as samebito of Kaidan by Rite Publishing, but here Mark Hyzer's pencil illustration of the samebito for Kaidan.

I actually prefer the sharkskin human with gills Christos linked (regardless of source) over the walking shark, though the weresharks from Razor Coast look cool...

It is a very cool image. Maybe we can get Jack to do a final piece with the sambito and shishi in it. It really came down to a matter of amount raised that determined the amount of art we could cram into the book. Jack is well paid and deserves every penny of it but it limited our art/page ratio for this book a bit.

I actually prefer samebito as described by Japanese folklore, which the sharkskin gill guy doesn't even come close. The walking sharkman is the samebito, by Japanese tradition.

Since a few people missed the post on KS, the backer NPCs will be updated into the PDF since some folks were really late with their submissions (we didn't want to punish you or the folks who didn't submit on time).

Fair enough g-p. I'm very aware of your heritage links and fondness for the culture and your work on Kaidan. And I appreciate that. I have no truck with staying true to heritage for heritage sake, so I'm working purely on aesthetics.

Samebito look kinda wrong to me. As do werewolves, kitsune, minotaurs and other animals on human legs. The samebito as pictured doesn't even look like it can see its own navel, like someone yanked its tail and morphed it into a pair of legs.

Sharkskin guy looks like he might be a genetic mix-cousin or hybridised form of sharks, and I like that. The samebito as pictured looks like medieval drawings of monsters, or early colonial drawings of kangaroos. All physiologically wrong somehow. Many monsters from folklore are physiologically ridiculous, and perhaps they were designed that way to inspire more visceral fear, but I think it has more to do with a lack of perception or 3D rendering. ;) This is all opinion of course.

So shoot me - what do I know - I like ratfolk, upright bear-men and vegepygmies. :)

I was just curious, I backed the KS at a level that was supposed to give me 2 extra copies to share with a pair of my friends, and some other goodies. How exactly would that be done? I don't expect my code to work for anyone else, and I have generally no idea how that would be done. Also, is there an eta on the Heroes of the East I-III that were included at the $40,- level?

We are working on a little errata for HoE I-III so it might be a week or so (about the same time as the NPCs).
The extra copies should have had a field in the backer survey for your tier. To be honest, I delegated that to my business manager. If that section was not in there, please let me know so we can hit everyone at that tier up!

Love the book! My cleric in my game is using the Ki domain and is loving it.

Fantastic! That's great to hear. Is he the 15th Dalai Lama or something? :-)

He is a cleric of Irori in a kingmakerish type game so he very well could become a Dalai Lama :-D just a great product all around

Wonderful fit and thank you. We are just glad you enjoyed it.

heh heh. I've got the guys in my group squabbling over who gets the 2 extra pdf's...

Speaking of iori, there is sone good options for champions of iori to be found in this book if you use your imagination. Just saying.

Any word on those extra copies for backers yet? Also about the HoE 1, 2 and 3 bonus?
Just wondering because I haven't heard anything yet.

That terrible feeling when you're short 98 cents. =(

Definitely want to have a look at this book later.

Now off! To find a dollar!

I assume you mean to say, you cannot find it. It is likely you missed Little Red Goblin Games' post regarding their products being temporarily unavailable. They should be back again sometime soon.
