Complement that party

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32

Starting off as a Player in a new Kingmaker group. Since I am a bit late to the party, I'm looking to complement their already-chosen characters. Currently, there are:

* Elven Staff Magus
* Human Flame Oracle (Blackened)
* Dwarven Barbarian
* Half-Elven Knife Master Rogue

I've thought about adding a full arcane caster, but the magus player is rather "competitive", so other ideas are welcome as well.

Grand Lodge

Debuffer Witch.

You have blasters, but you can make it so everyone can hurt the enemy more.

Buff Bard.

Nobody complains about buffs, and you can make a great face, along with good needed knowledge.

Scarab Sages

I would skip the full arcane. Blackened oracle is going to be very blasty, and if the magus is "competitive" it will be worse. I would go with an inquisitor, cleric, bard or a different flavor oracle. You can help with healing and help frontline with the barb. You may want to play a seeker oracle if you go that way just to cover the the loss of trap finding that the knife master gave up. But I never played kingmaker, so I don't know how common traps are.

What exactly do you mean with "competitive"? Does he want the loot for himself? Be the best?

Full arcane is probably the best choice. "Almost-full" arcane like witch and bard are the nex best choices.

Maybe play a controler Wizard or Sorcerer. Shouldn't collide with the damage dealing Magus.

Grand Lodge

Witch is a full caster.

Every bit as much as a Wizard or Sorcerer.

Bard is never the wrong answer.

What do you mean witch is an "almost-full" caster? They do have 9 levels of spells (+ cantrips) and as many spells per day as a non-specialist wizard, you know.

True, but not a "full arcane" caster. They are rules-wise but their spell list is just not "full arcane" in the classical world shattering sense of the word. They have hexes that make up for that but spell-wise, they are more limited than a wizard/sorcerer.

Probably "territorial" would have been the better word for the magus. He has his niche, and aims to be the be-all end-all in that.

I've toyed with the idea of a witch, particularly shadow patron. It seems a likely compromise since I can mix and match arcane spells with divine, and can keep clear of the magus.

Bards have a bad name with out GM, who thinks they are a bit too goofy. They're not banned, but it might take some time to get the Elan references out of him ;) Still, a good suggestion. I'll see if there is an archetype that maybe replaces music with something tied into rulership.

That's... not how you define a full arcane caster. A full caster has spells up to 9th level. Do witches get 9th level spells? Are witches arcane casters? If you answered yes to both, you agree they are full arcane casters.

Drawing spells from the sorcerer/wizard spell list or elsewhere has nothing to do with it.

I'd do a Bard, just to spite your DM (and prove, for everyone's sake that a bard is far more than just that stereotype; the bard is probably the broadest concept-filling class in PF), but I think the Witch is probably a better choice for the party

Instead of looking for an archetype, you could just use Perform (oratory) for the audible components of your bardic performances.

I already said they are full arcane casters rules-wise. However, they are a relatively new class. Most people have a fixed perception of what a full arcane caster is capable of and that's based on the "older" and more common full arcane classes wizard and sorcerer. A witch simply doesn't have all the tricks of the wizard. She does have other useful abilities but is more focused than a wizard. If you try to play a witch like a wizard, you'll find the spell list lacking. That's all I'm saying.

Want to make a Bard seem less goofy? Say you are a Ulfen Savage Skald... Nothing goofy about that... Do you sing/chant? Sure, but they are songs of pillage and battle, that can induce Rage (As the spell) in friend or foe alike... Did I mention that Dwarven Barbarian friend gets free rounds of rage? Yea... I don't think he'll mind.

For Bonus "I'm not to be trifled with" points, take the Feat Tribal Scars (I suggest Bear Belt Clan)... 1st level with 14+Con Mod Hp, yup, not a goofy dancer.

Have fun writing up a brief explanation of how you end up in the river kingdoms (I suggest it involves deception, followed by slavery, followed by bloody revenge), and you're good to go!
