Dragon Disciple

Advice

HEy guys i am looking for a lil help becoming a dragon disciple by lvl 5. I know i will need 5 ranks of Arcana, draconic language but idk how to go about it. Should i do Bloodrager playtest class or should i do 1 lvl in sorcere so i can have the arcana and then the rest a melee class like Paladin, barb, or evenfighter? idk what to do. We are on a 35point buy system, and playing in the kingmaker campaign.

There are lots and lots of DD builds. Search for Oterisk's guide, he has made some splendid ones.

As I say, many possible builds. This one I suggest because I have just made it for a game, but there are methods with Barbarian, Bard, Summoner, all sorts. I'll take into account your astonishing 35 point buy.

Azpilicuata, Human DD.

STR: 17 DEX: 12 CON: 14 INT: 12 WIS: 10 CHA: 17 +2 Human to Str. Bonuses to Str then Cha then Str all the way.

Paladin of Apsu 2 (Divine Hunter for the extra feat, you won't use heavy armour).
Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer 3
DD 8
Sorcerer 8

Take Eldritch Heritage Abyssal for claws and extra Str.

Azpilicueta's BaB does suffer thus you need the extra Str to offset it. However, this gives you more Sorc levels which you need for spells and boosting the Draconic bloodline. There are many builds which don't do this, but I am one for focusing on this major part of the class.

For flavour reasons, I have gone with Silver Draconic bloodline and Apsu as his god because Silver Dragons are paladins anyway. It is explicitly spelt out in Dragons Revisited. And dragons are sorcerers too. They are also prone to going mad and tarnishing, which is the roleplay reason you can have Abyssal Eldritch Heritage. My GM needs convincing story reasons for choices, these I think are justifiable.

As you are playing Kingmaker and this build includes Paladin levels, you should use one of your precious skill points on Diplomacy. It will do wonders in this AP, and of course you will have silly Cha to keep it up there. I beleive you only have one battle in a game day too, so you will get to use your Smite Evil.

Get a bunch of buff spells. You will also have room for several utility spells depending on the party.

I play mine as an actual Silver Dragon, temporarily embarrassed by being stuck in human form.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Captian K. suggests a great paladin based DD. I played the Barbarian variety. Most of this is coppied from another thread i posted in, but...

I played a sorcerer (copper draconic bloodline) / barbarian (fiend totem) with Eldritch heritage (abyssal) that prestiged into Dragon Disciple in my rise of the runelords game. He was indeed a very intersting and powerful character. He ended up stronger than most of the giants we faced. I roleplayed him as a sorcerer who's initial spark of magic was draconic, but the more he looked inside himself to find deeper magic the more he became aware of a darkness inside staring back at him (Abyssal Eldritch Heritage Feat Chain). That revalation sent him on a rage spiral for a while (cue the barbarian levels with fiend totem), but ultimately he committed himself towards choosing the good inside over the evil (dragon over demon, cue dragon disciple). He was chaotic neutral to show his struggle with the opposing forces inside, and very rarely raged (as the fiend totem caused horns to spout from his head reavealing his darker nature). He carried a holy cold iron longsword as a his main weapon and symbol of his commitment to the light. I joined the party at level 11, didn't rage until 13 or 14 when I encountered my first demon. I one rounded the demon, but terrified my entire party in the process. Had to answer some questions after that.

Sorc 1
Barbarian 4
DD 10
Sorc 2 (decided the extra spells and spell levels were worth more than a couple more levels of barbarian)

Admittedly, the last couple DD levels aren't optimal, but by that point I was a combat beast anyway and story-wise i wanted to finish the path.

You could also go Eldritch heritage feat chain using the Orc bloodline. This gives you a rage ability and the ability to incease in size in addition to strength bonuses. The strength bonuses are key though, as you won't be full BAB and will need it to help you hit. Also, when you hit, you hit much harder. Orc bloodline could be used on the Paladin based build Captain K. posted, giving you rage in addition to paladin goodness.

Obviously, Power Attack and using a weapon that can be two-handed should go without saying to capitalize on both your DD strength and Eldritch Heritage Strength no matter which route you take to get to DD. I went longsword with a buckler so I could alter my AC dramatically between 1-handed fighting with buckler (+5 buckler is a huge difference in AC), 2-handed fighting (-1 to attack but dont have to drop the buckler), and Rage).

There are other DD builds using Bard but i have no experience with them and will leave someone else to suggest them.

I'd happily go bloodrager if DD does bloodline advancement with it.

It's kinda up in the air at the moment if it does or not though.

One has to think it does. It has spontaneous casting and it has Draconic Bloodline, but I understand it has not been made clear how they interact with Sorcerer Bloodlines.

Sense suggests to me they do count. This is because a 5th level Bloodrager of any other Bloodline does count. It is 5th level and can spontaneously cast 1st level arcane spells. There is nothing stopping you from being an Arcane Bloodrager and taking DD, it just counts Draconic Bloodline level as 1. Not ideal, but it does work. Making it more difficult for a Draconic Bloodrager seems silly, so I would assume it is fine.

In that case, the build is absolutely simple.

Bloodrager 5
DD for however many levels.

And that's it. You are a dragon who is a Barbarian. You lose a bit of BaB but your HP and AC and Str will be massive. Get fighting.

6th is the minimum level for entrance. You have to qualify for a PrC in the level before you take it.

i decided to gobloodrager as both your ideas were good but i wanted that extra skill point from favored class. But now my question is what weapons and armor should i use? better yet what would my gold be at lvl 3 with max starting gold?

3105gp.

Get the biggest, nastiest sword you can. Greatsword or Falchion are the usual choices.

I'd take a chain shirt for armour for the movement. Get medium if you want, though.

if you can spare the attack penalty and feat, a large elven curve blade would do wonders 2d8 with a critical range of 18-20
you could bypass the feat tax by taking heirloom weapon i think. There is a second level spell that allows you to make it a masterwork weapon, then you can start enchanting it.

or half elf alternate racial trait ancestral arms instead of skill focus

Also, if you are looking at going with the dragon form and natural attacks; look at dragon style and I highly recommend this especially if you are trying to take as many sorcerer levels as possible to get more forms per day. By doing this base attack becomes less important and strength become much more important based on how natural attacks work.
