Melee / Divine Pal / Cle / Inq / Ora ?

Advice

Greetings,

I am looking for advice regarding a new character that will be introduced in a party of 5 for RotRL AP. The rest of the party consist of 2 rangers (one ranged, one natural weapon melee – shapeshifter archetype), a wizard/cleric and a rogue.

The backstory is essentially made, so the race is fixed to human.

The class itself is anything but fixed though. He is going to be a frontliner, and some sort of spellcasting is needed. I am strongly leaning towards divine spellcasting for backstory reasons. The options I have, as I see them, are :

- Paladin (no problem with the group alignment as a whole, although most of the party members are way more chaotic good in inclination than LG. So some form of dilemma will emerge, if not the worst kind such as evil-good problems)
- Warrior cleric (essentially a str based melee cleric, maybe reach, with just enough Wis to get highest spells)
- Inquisitor
- Oracle (metal? battle ?)

Now the limitations: Both the Paladin and Cleric would essentially be CRB only, both in terms of feats and spells. The Inquisitor and the Oracle would have de facto access to class features and spells specifically included in the class description, but access to other feats and options in the APG will be difficult (as in hard to convince the DM to allow them).

The stats aren’t rolled yet. I have no idea what I could end up with, and obviously a 10 pts-buy equivalent makes for a really poor Paladin for instance. The rolling method is 4d6 drop lowest, x6, if it matters.

What are the pros and cons for each ? Is the Paladin that much a poorer option without the new spells (outside CRB) ? What about the pt-buy equivalent dependency for each class to make them effective?

Thanks !

With out stats its hard to call, Paladin needs Str, and Cha thats pretty much it. If you can play a tiefling and have fey foundling feat you are near unkillable.

Cleric needs Str, Wis, Cha

Oracle is Str and Cha like the paladin and Lore oracle is not a bab dip for a paladin that has dumped dexterity.

My favorite right now is Warpriest. Heavy Armor, Martial weapons, spell casting, bonus feats, full BAB with chosen weapon. Needs Str, a 12 or 14 wis is fine as long as you can get a +2 or +4 stat item later. Cha is good and needed for fervor so you can swift buff yourself.

Goodluck but we need stats to help you make a call.

I might try to push to play the beta Warpriest. Although I've read they are even MADer than the other 4 options.

Fey Foundling is not CRB. So that's probably out for the paladin.

My first choice would have been the paladin, but I am not sure how they stack up to the Oracle/Inq/Cleric built for melee if you can't have access to stuff like the litanies and Fey Foundling.

see if you can use the ACG playtest Warpriest class--sounds like it'd be right up your alley.

EDIT: whoops, didnt notice our most recent post.

Silver Crusade

Consider the battle cleric if you get stuck with a low point value build. You can get a lot of value with low attributes. I play an 8 point build reach cleric, and it has worked out very well. That 8 point Clericzilla build, fully buffed at 5th level, usually gets multiple attacks +9 for 2d6+15 damage. Limiting the same approach to Core Rule Book would drop it to +8 for 1d8 +13 - still respectable. This character has only 14 strength and uses only non-magical simple weapons.

Silver Crusade

Paladin all the way. A CRB Paladin is still solid. All you really need are Str and Cha with a not-terrible Con, and a few feats (Power Attack, Weapon Focus, Critical feats).

Here's a quick build through lvl 13. Swap out the filler feats (lvls 3-7) as you like.

Super Fast 15pb Pal:
Str 17 Dex 12 Con 14 Int 7 Wis 8 Cha 15

01 Power Attack, Weapon Focus (Falchion)
03 Improved Initiative
04 +1 Str [= 18]
05 Toughness
07 Combat Reflexes
08 +1 Cha [= 16]
09 Improved Critical
11 Critical Focus
13 Staggering Critical

I'm playing a Paladin (sacred servant of Iomedae/Vengeance) in RotRL now and I am having a good time.

Our party consists of a Rogue,Druid,Bard and my Paladin.
We finished the first book and my Paladin was the face/tank/DD it was pretty awesome.

Just get STR and CHA , grab a greatsword , put ranks into diplomacy and you should be fine.

My feats are Fey-Foundling and Power Attack (I'm an Aasimar so no additional feat from being a human) my next feats will be Combat Expertise and Leadership.

At later levels I am going to pick up Unsanctioned Knowledge for some sweet spells.

Especially through the first book you should really shine with a Paladin , don't know about the rest of the AP because we haven't played it yet
