ACG Classes in PFS

Any actual in-game experiences and thoughts about them so far in organized play?

I'm running a Heavens Shaman which I was digging 100% until they changed the spell list to the Druid Spell list. Otherwise, other than making sure my GM knows my key gimmicks (Heaven's Leap, Enveloping Void, I basically have two oracle-like 'mysteries' and the second is swappable), I haven't had any trouble.

I did one online game with all ACG classes and another with @redward's investigator, but otherwise haven't seen them at my FLGS gamenight.

I don't have any experience with the ACG, but I do know it helps sometimes to print out a page or two to help explain things. Much easier to understand with the text in front of you imo.

Brad was playing a swashbuckler the other day. It was level 1 before they improved level 1 swashbucklers, so the class sucked. He was pretty stoked about its future though.

Because you cannot rebuild, I have avoided them in PFS so that I know what I'm getting when I start. I've stopped playing too many characters for one reason or another to jump in blindly at this point.

Shadow Lodge 4/5

@MrSin technically you need the ACG doc at the table to play your play test character ;)

@FuriousKender at the rate I play, mys shaman will probably be retired before the ACG comes out! I honestly want to give the Skald and arcanist a spin, but I think I'd only do those once ACG comes out with the final classes

Scarab Sages 4/5

I have a 1st level Brawler, but I've only played him once. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep him or use the 1st level retraining to swap for something else.

I went ahead and retrained my Fighter/Oracle to be a Warpriest/Oracle. I was about to dip a level of Cleric anyway to try to create some version of a Neutral Paladin of Pharasma, so Warpriest worked out nicely. I've had limited experience actually playing him, but so far, so good. Fervor really helps solve the main issue I was having with not being able to get my buff spells off on time. Now I can pre-buff with the Oracle slots, then use a swift to cast Divine Favor out of a Warpriest slot. With Pearls of Power being so cheap, I should be able to have Divine Favor going for almost every PFS encounter. That brings him almost back to full-BAB even with 5 levels of Oracle.

My biggest worry is that they'll reverse their decision to allow a Sacred Weapon to be something other than the deity's Favored Weapon. That would hurt the build, as he's built around wielding an Elven Curved Blade. Losing the Sacred Weapon damage isn't a big deal, as that won't likely ever apply for him, but losing full-BAB with the Elven Curved Blade would set him back a bit. He'd be no worse off than if I'd done Fighter 1/Oracle 5/Cleric 1 (BAB 4) instead of Oracle 5/Warpriest 2 (BAB 4, 5 with Sacred Weapon). As long as Fervor and swift action casting sticks around, it'll be worth having Warpriest levels.

There's a good chance he'll be near retirement by August anyway.

I had a nice PFS run with dragons demand and tide of morning.

One annoying thing is that combat reflexes for example went from hypercool to maybe i DON"T need it... retraining a feat isn't that bad though.

I've played my Investigator twice now. Both times I gave the GM a heads up and had the relevant pages from the ACG playtest with me. Haven't run into any problems yet.

I really like the class and I'm glad it's available to play while we wait for the book. I'm hoping for a small bump in combat efficacy when the book is published, but happy with her as is for now. Regardless, I'm hoarding her prestige in case I need to do any retraining.

Silver Crusade 5/5 5/5 **

I foolishly succumbed to temptation and played a level 2 swashbucker.

It pretty much sucked. Basically a burden on the party, barely contributing and definitely NOT filling the ftr role.

Haven't yet decided if I'll just retire the character, apply enough GM credit to get enough prestige to retrain it, or apply enough GM credit to get it to a level where it may actually be functional.

How is the Arcanist in play? I am thinking of starting one off with some DM credit and I did not particularly follow the changes to it during the playtest.

Is it ok now, or do I need to wait for the actual book to come out with feats and other supporting options for it to really work?

The level of dervish dancer REAAALY helped that for me.

The Arcanist works very effectively with the rules we have now. Getting to cherry pick the best level 1 wizard school powers and sorcerer bloodline arcana allows for some very strong combinations.

One of the bard archetypes or fighter?

Have to be bard.. hybrids can't dip into the classes they are hybrids of.

The Divination and Void schools jumped out at me right away. Unfortunately it is unlikely that I can take School Understanding twice.

Unless otherwise indicated, one can't take the same exploit twice.

SammyT - can you (or anyone) elaborate on your experience with the Heavens Shaman?

I'm thinking of retraining my Aasimar Urban Druid into one, at the expense of an enormous amount of prestige points.

The bard. Dex to damage means you can drop mooks in one hit, and its like double strength weapon specialization that gets better as you level. Dex + Swashbuckler level and the damage gets pretty good. Not amazing but pretty good.

I made a Lore Shaman but never played him. When they switched to the druid list I changed him into an arcanist instead.

I haven't played a whole lot with the arcanist, but it felt about the same as any other low level caster. I think I need to get him to higher levels to really feel the difference.

I did remake my shaman when they augmented the druid list but decided against playing him. They hinted and doing some more work with the spell list and I am holding out for that; I am hoping the list goes back to at least something I like as opposed to something I am ok with.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I sure can!

Quick note, that entails the typical low level (1-4) play of a caster. After Monday's game day, I'll be L5 with L3 spells. I'm looking forward to L6 when I get my Wandering Hex to go with my Wandering Spirit for ultra flexibility.

He has a level of dervish dancer. Only way I see to make a dex based swashbucker even playable at level 2. Still pretty bad. Worse damage AC and saves than a fighter or barbarian. Parry never actually accomplished anything. The rogue did more damage and had a higher AC.

You do realize you get weapon finesse as a bonus feat and at level 2 you can retrain your first level feat into Dervish Dance feat for 5 prestige to make it perfectly playable at level 2?

Yeah, and if you want to take advantage of first level retraining, you can start as a dervish dancer to get the feat for free at first level, use first level retraining to switch to swashbuckler at second, then spend the prestige to retrain the first level feat to Dervish Dance, allowing Dex to attack and damage from level one.

Playing a Brawler. The select-a-feat ability has come in useful. Combat on a boat? Hey, I suddenly have Improved Bull Rush! Whee!

My only criticism so far is that the number of uses per day could stand to be boosted at lower levels, but they already said the final version of the class will probably get that increased.

Sadly not. Divination and Void are both good as is Teleportation as that gives you Shift to get out of grapples.

The Bloodline power is also excellent with Infernal and Fey being the front runners for their +2DC arcana. Arcane is also good for its wider application +1DC.

I am still playing a Swashbuckler, rapidly approaching 5th level.

I have a 6th level GM credit baby that will most likely end up as a slayer, allthough still waiting for a chance to play him.

I've got a GM credit baby that I'd like to turn into a blaster Arcanist, but I'll probably wait until the final book comes out, because I'm anticipating a nerf.

I honestly doubt it given the class was significantly increased in power during the playtest and the general dearth of developer involvement in the arcanist thread.

What nerf are you expecting? I think that they have already over-nerfed a few things with the arcanist. I am waiting for the book because the arcanist badly needs support options like feats, favored class bonuses, more exploits and items to really shine.

Being able to cherry-pick bloodlines AND school powers is pretty insane. As it is, I can take the Orc bloodline and the Admixture school, and use arcane pool points to make a blaster who can crank CL higher than a Sorcerer or Wizard could.

Meanwhile, Counterspelling got nerfed into the ground; the arcanist just needs smoothing all around.
