Help noob with his AC

Advice

Hey guys. Still pretty new to the game. I see that as you level up, your BAB goes up a lot. Also strong enemies have high attack. But I'm wondering if you can increase your AC a lot, and if so, how? I'm just worried I'll never avoid attacks from strong enemies. Thanks

Silver Crusade

you =can= but its not recommended. What are you playing? usually strong enemies hit you no matter what (high AC lessens the derivative attack hits)

but, if you go paladin. at 20, you can take +5 Full plate, +5 heavy shield w/ +3 dex, dodge +1, shield focus +1, ammy of nat armor +5, + 5 protection ring

so thats 10+14+7+5+5+3+1+1= 46 AC

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Oh yeah, I'm a Ranger. I was also asking for my friends too so I can help them. Just wondering what some people do to help their AC if there is much to do.

What level are you, rorek?

Why would it not be recommended to increase your Armor Class? That's the craziest thing I've read on these boards in a long time.

AC is increased by any number of means. You can buy better armor, find magical armor, get deflection bonuses from rings of protection, add your ability score increases per level to Dexterity, get some kind of magical item that increases your Dexterity (bonus side effect of helping your ranged attacks and Reflex saves), take the Dodge feat, etc., etc...

Improving your AC as you advance in the game is a normal part of the game, and always has been. In most games, you take advantage of any opportunity to improve anything you can. Like bows and come across a magical bow? Buy it/loot it from a treasure hoard. Need better AC? Buy some new armor. Getting beat up a lot? Grab that potion of cure light wounds off the dead orc.

Not recommended? Sheesh.

Thanks. You get one ability point per four levels right?

Low-level characters tend to have (relatively) high AC and low hit points. It's not uncommon to see a 1st level character capable of dealing more damage in a single hit than he has hit points, so AC is relatively more important. High-level characters tend to (relatively) low AC and high hit points, so attacks are more likely to hit but a single hit is less likely to kill.

At low levels the only way to increase your AC is to wear better armor or increase your dexterity score. As you level up, it's all about magic items and (occasionally) class features and feats.

I think he meant "don't increase it at the cost of your ability to deal damage". Having a high AC only offers protections from attacks directed at you, but a good damage output will eliminate threats that can face everybody in the party.

as a ranger? max your dex out, at least +8, grab celestial armor and add +5 eventually, then take dodge and the ammy + ring.

Also. Is it common for the GM to let characters increase their health by their maximum HD when they level up?

Correct. If your Dexterity is at an odd number right now, you can add your next increase to increase your modifier.

You could also look for a magic item that increases Dex, such as a belt of incredible Dexterity.

Rorek might be confused about your question. He may think you are trying to buy very heavy plate armor, which would be bad for a ranger. But there are plenty of armors a ranger can buy that will not harm his skills and abilities, and magical enhancements can increase armor bonuses without encumbering your character. Likewise, there are magical items that increase armor, such as bracers of armor and rings of protection.

We'll I'm only level 3 and my DEX is 18

Silver Crusade

I let my players take full hit die. (makes it mean more) but so do my monsters :P.

Yeah, that's a fairly common houserule. It means you'll have quite a few more hit points, so constitution isn't quite as important as usual.

I wouldn't say it's common, but I've done it in one campaign, and I know a couple of others who have.

It can be a good idea if the GM intends on doing the same with enemies (maxing hp), or is throwing out a higher-than-average Challenge Rating for his encounters. In a high-danger campaign, it can really help even things out.

If not, the PCs quickly outpace the element of danger in the game, and things can get boring, and even a little complicated for the GM.

It`s difficult and expensive to keep your AC good enough as you level above ca. 10th. Finding ways to fly or turning invisible is way better to keep attacks from hitting you, or some kind of miss chance (displacement, mirror image etc..).

Hi jjajpro one of the most important ways of increasing AC is to get different modifiers to AC. In Pathfinder it’s important to remember bonuses of the same type do not stack, or add together.
Let’s start by looking at the formula for AC:
10 + Armor bonus + shield bonus + Dexterity modifier + size mod + other mods

Armor bonus is granted from the armor your character wears (usually), and shield is from shields, both of these can be increased by magically enhancing the armor or shield. One thing to remember about Dex. Mod to AC is that most armors limit the Dex mod that you can apply to your AC. Size mods only apply if your character is a size other than medium sized, well I guess you could say medium sized PCs have an AC size mod of 0.

The other mods to AC are quite diverse and extensive they include:
Natural armor, dodge, Deflection

These are rather easy to get with magical items or feats, as a note dodge bonuses stack with each other. There are other mods to AC as well, they’re harder to get though.

Here’s a thread for an even more detailed guide to increase AC.
