Scion: Hero Ragnarok Interest Check

Recruitment

Ok, so I tried this once before, but it didn't seem to shake out. Is anyone interested in playing Scion? I was thinking of running the Ragnarok campaign, which is restricted to the Aesir, if I can get enough interest (3-5 players).

One.

Dark Archive

Interested, though I have run the campaign before, in a face to face game

Eh, I'm alright with that. I've read most of the adventure paths so I'm no stranger to having to seperate character and player knowledge.

Sovereign Court

I don't own or have read the Ragnarok book but I do have the first 2 books of Scion (Hero and Demigod). I would be willing to play an Aesir character and take part in the Ragnarok game.

Dark Archive

Well, that looks like 3, any house rules because Scion seems to break at high levels by default?

Only a couple. For one your characters will start with three legend and eight bonus points at character creation. In essence, you will count as having automatically bought a point of Legend. Secondly, Untouchable Opponent will, of course, be banned. And Thirdly, Epic Perception will add to firearms damage the same way Epic Strength does for Melee weapons. I know the game breaks at higher levels, and that's pretty much unavoidable, but I think it can be fun anyhow.

Dark Archive

Hmmm, don't know if what others are looking at playing, but thinking either a rockstar scion of Baldur or a goth teenager scion of Hel.

Rockstar scion of Baldur seems much cooler to me

I feel I should say, I got the books but I've never played Scion before though I've always been interested in it, so pardon me if I slow things down a bit.

Dark Archive

May be a bit presumptuous, but thought I'd work up a character:

Martyn Maddock

Calling: World Famous Rock Star
Nature: Gallant
Legend: 3
Willpower: 5

Martyn is a high flying rockstar, world famous, talented, always topping the worlds sexiest men charts, as well as the music charts. Greatly arrogant and considering himself gods gift to the world. Little did he realise it wasn't so far off the mark.
When one day Baldur visited and informed him that he was indeed the child of a god (and who can argue with Baldur), gave him an old pair of sunglasses and the keys to a merc and said get ready - there's a war coming, Martyn stepped up his game.

She's a scion of Odin, which is why she does the work she does, and why she keeps in contact with Lars.

I am interested, let me get back with a concept.

Sovereign Court

I am thinking of playing a magic using character, scion of Frigg. I will be buying a lot of boons but smaller levels of epic attributes. She will be a professional seer as her occupation and be an advocate.

I'm back, stuffed full of turkey and cheer, and ready to go! So, now to my background stuff. First three to four to get complete characters to me with all this too are in, since I get a lot of interest in these threads but never seem to get completed stuff.

In an attempt to get all the information I need to create stuff from character backgrounds without having to continually push for information, I am asking that you create backgrounds the following way:

Step 1: Write three things about your character’s concept and background, three things that you think are the most essential parts of your character. You don’t have to stop at three, if you like. This is just a minimum.

Step 2: List two goals for the character that you, as a player, think would be cool to see accomplished in-game.

Step 3: List two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character.

Step 4: Describe three people that are tied to the character though blood, romance or honor. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. All can do something useful for you, if you can get the situations to line up. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.

Step 5: Describe three memories that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

Step The First:
Lars is a cop through and through. His mother's family is a long line of cops, his father was one in a mortal form. He takes it incredibly seriously.

He has tremendous expectations of his own capabilities. He is close to being insufferably arrogant and assured of his abilities, traits only exacerbated by his discovery that he is in fact, part god. His plans often bear fruit in the long-term thus he is a consummate long-term thinker. One great example of his long-term orientation is how he went about preparing to become a police officer. He decided to become one at a young age, and went about studying anything related that he could think of. Chemistry, forensic science, criminological theory, jiu jiutsu, anything. He is a stickler for details, and rarely acts unless he feels he has all the information available or necessary to be successful.

He dislikes the abuse of legitimately-acquired power more than anything else in the world. Corrupt cops, politicians on the take, abusive parents, he strongly believes in authority as a force for good so he reacts with anger at the abuse of it. That's ultimately why he went to internal affairs.

Step The Second:
I would like to be able to connive. As good in a scrap as Lars is, he is much more likely to be a thinker and a schemer, so I'd like to be able to rub my hands together and have opportunities to be all "Just as planned. MUAHAHAHAHA!" every once in a while.

More specifically, I would like to have the human resources that the players have have a chance to shine. Being part of the police force is an integral part of his character, and I'd like it to mean more than just having an information source.

Step The Third:
The first and biggest secret about Lars is that despite his efforts to keep titanspawn and scions alike out of the force using his position to audit the activities of any officer he comes across, there are people in power who want to get rid of him, and have him removed from his post to get their fingers into it. Specifically, there is a person in the Mayor's office and the DA's office who both are actively trying to find a way to disgrace him and have his post taken away.

Also, partly because of his meticulous planning and partly because of the ways in which he wages war against them, Lars has very little experience in dealing with titanspawn and scions directly. Because of this, he is actually slightly afraid of titanspawn because he has so little background experience to work from. The lack of information to draw on makes direct confrontation a daunting prospect.

Step The Fourth:
The first person tied to Lars is his mentor in all things supernatural, Crime Reporter Shandra Grandt. She is a scion of Odin who uses her abilities and position to gather information on the activities of scions and titanspawn within the city as well as keeping an ear out for more mundane activities. She's been a scion longer than Lars has and has more experience dealing with the supernatural than he does so she is his go-to source in moments of "I don't know what this is".

The second person, tied by blood, is his half-sister Katherine Little. The Little family is quite wealthy, and the marriage of Lars' mother into them made things unusual for young Lars. He never got along with his stepfather, coming from a blue-collar family legacy into a wealthy socialite environment will do that to you, even at seven. Katherine is nine years younger than Lars, and she won't let him forget how much they don't get along. When Lars was hitting the books and practicing martial arts, Katherine was learning fine art and proper high-society etiquette. They don't actively hate each other, they just can't stand to be around each other long because they are so different.

Lastly is Scion of Set, Kristoff Veils. Veils is a former sergeant pending corruption charges as Lars' first collar in Internal Affairs. He was arrested and Lars brought everything he could against the young man partly because of the drug money he was taking on the side and partly because of the nature of his parentage. Veils is probably planning a way out and vengeance using his abilities as a demigod, but in the meantime, he is safely behind bars.

The last step I'll have to get to tomorrow.

Good on you Andiemus. Should we actually get a game going I look forward to playing with Lars.

Legal professional of Hel.
I'll be back with the rest.

Grand Lodge

Here is my character, Laura the Scion of Frigg. You can click on the name to view the character details. Below is the answer to the 5 questions.

5 Questions Answers:

Step 1:

Laura Gerard was born in England. Her father Daniel Gerard was a senior student at Oxford University who grew infatuated by a guest scholar named Fridhild Hagen to to teach for a few weeks on meteorological science. They met after class and collaborated on projects and their common interests turned into a love affair. After finishing her task she departed but a year later and after Daniel's Graduation, a baby was delivered to Dainel's appartment and a lawyer turning over full custody as Fridhild's whereabouts were a mystery. He would name the baby Laura and would love the child as a good father.

Daniel earned a decent paycheck in Meteorological science so could support the child financially. As for Laura, she was not a normal child always daydreaming and saying and doing strange things. She was diagnosed at a young age as Autistic and thus required much supervision during her childhood. On the other hand, she proved to be a Savant able to operate far beyond her grade level in intellectual pursuits. But her strange mannerisms made her a social outcast at school, eventually forcing her to be home schooled. While Daniel would eventually marry and have 2 more sons, Laura would be the odd ball of the family, never ever to fit in with normal society.

Her vast intelligence easily allowed her to finish her education sooner than normal for her age graduating high school at 16. She would attend college from Correspondence course taking Academic and Mythological studies, proving an apt pupil and quickly gaining the best grades. After getting her diploma she would leave school and her home to seek out a career but found her prospects rather slim. To make ends meet she studied the art of fortune telling and eventually would prove apt at making astounding predictions of the future. Her success gave her the money to found her own Fortune Telling shop with a Norse theme.

Her awakening would occur two years prior when her mother visited the store and revealed her true self and that she was a Scion of Frigg. With the Titan War in full tilt her skills would be needed in the coming war, not as a warrior but as a pedagogue and intemeterary of fate on behalf of the Scions in order to aid their success. To aid her in this task she was given three Relics. The first, a bag of Runestones that could be used for prophecy. The second, a spindle from Frigg's loom that gives command over magic powers and the element of sky. The final, a cloak weaved out of cloud that would deflect harm. Since this visit, Laura would travel the world aiding various Scions with her vast knowledge and Prophecy skills.

Step 2:

Laura seeks to understand the nature of Fate and her role in the greater plan. If fate is a power beyond the Gods then to understand Fate is to understand the nature of the world. Her second goal is discovery, she wishes to learn the secrets of the Legendary World and discover new things she has yet to learn about the true world that she lives in.

Step 3:

List two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character.

One secret her character has is that she has not always been truthful in revealing her prophecies. Sometimes she feels that she needs to tell people what they want to hear rather than what the actual truth of the matter and thus has lied from time to time about her visions. As for a secret that involves her is that she will be involved in some way during the age of Ragnarok. She will either give an edge that will aid the Gods or be the linchpin that will allow the Titans to slay the Aesir and take their place in the heavens.

Step 4:

Laura's best colleagues have been Madame Nishka, an old and powerful Russian prophetess who she has aided in the past and has collaborated on various prophecies that have helped the forces of the gods in the war with the titans. Her current lover is Tylor Simmons, a fatebound human who witnessed Laura's involvement in a battle with Titanspawn and has grown infatuated and the events that surround her. As a wealthy business owner (in the Technology Business), he can provide financial support as well as advanced technology but is getting drawn deeper and deeper to events beyond his control. Laura's greatest rival is an angry individual named Henry Kirkland, a man who went to Laura for a prophecy. She saw the events of his death in a car accident when traveling on a shopping errand. To save his life she manipulated him so that he would be elsewhere when the event occured thus saving his life. However she failed to realize that someone had to die in his place to keep the balance of fate and thus his wife would go to perform the errand instead and died in the exactly the same circumstances. Survivor's guilt has driven Henry to madness and he wants vengeance on Laura. He may go so far as to draw upon the power of the Titans for his chance for vengeance.

Step 5:

Laura remembers that all her life she has been unusual. She was not truely Autistic, she merely saw the world the way it was, her eyes not blind to the truth. Her strange dreams were prophecy for she had eyes to the very power of fate due to their heritage and she is constantly bombarded with visions of events that are or may be. When she gained access to magic she felt a sense of power, the ability to shape the world to her will. Her visions have become much stronger over the years and she has relied on her magic to overcome her physical limitations as she is not a warrior like many of the Scions.

Dark Archive

Step One:

Martyn reacts with his mouth, his first instinct in any situation is to either talk his way out of it, or make a quip about it.

Martyn was born to wealth and hasn't really known want, his mother was an A-list actress and Martyn's been rumoured to be the son of nearly every famous actor out there. Martyn was doted on by everyone growing up and has no idea what it's like to not have whatever he wants.

Despite his self-centred arrogance, he hates to see anyone downtrodden or hurt.

Step Two:

Would be good to put Martyn in charge of a group of people (not necessarily the player team), perhaps a community that needs protecting or a group that gets fatebound to him? (this is more a way I'd like to see Martyn progress, than an actual goal he thinks on.
For himself, Martyn would like the chance to prove that words are as valid a solution as violence, he won't shy away from a fight, but it's not his first instinct.

Step Three:

Martyn has a 10 year old daughter, Mistletoe, which came from a brief fling with one of his backing singers (Kristine Ilias) one Christams. He's kept tabs on Kristine and her daughter, and sends his her enough money to keep her kept well and keep the child out of the public eye.
Martyn's family gained wealth not through his mother's acting talents, but through his grandparents link with a Titanspawn run organised crime group. This group has kept tabs on people it has sponsored in the past and may return to claim it's debts.

Step Four:

Kristine and Mistletoe Ilias, Martyn had a fling with Kristine back when he was just a teen-star, he was never really in love with her and views the affair as a mistake, but he has a private detective on payroll to keep tabs on them and sends them money. Mistletoe is named such as their fling started as a kiss beneath some Mistletoe and escalated rapidly. Martyn would like to be more involved in his daughter's life, but feels he's left it too late and swooping in now would cause more heartache for all involved.

Cassandra Blake is Martyns lawyer and confidante, as well as his ex-girlfriend of 2 years. Martyn still loves her, but she's too occupied with her career for a relationship. She's independent, smart and sharp, despite her radically different lifestyle and skillset to Martyn's he finds speaking to her helpful for all manner of problems.

More to follow.

Grand Lodge

I have run and played Scion before and it does seem that the game centers around a lot of combat. It is difficult to play a pure social or pure mental style character when a lot of the quests involve fighting some type of Titanspawn and having the requirement of high levels of Epic Strength/Dexterity/Stamina to take down. There is few ways to "Outwit" a foe to victory or socially dominate it with epic attributes. My PC for this game is definitely not a fighter and I was tempted to take some Followers and/or Creatures just so I would have a meat shield. At best I can use Evil Eye to give them a -4 die penalty for a few rounds but that costs legend. I will rely a lot on the other PC's to keep my character safe. I took 1 rank in Epic Stamina so I could heal myself but a tank my character is not.

So, in part because I said I would and never got around to it, but mostly because I am quite desperate to see if it's possible to revive this campaign almost two weeks after it's last recruitment post, here is the last finished step of the character of Lars.

Step the Fifth:
Lars remembers the day he first discovered he was a scion. His father only made a brief appearance in a dream, saying that his "place would become clear to him later" before wandering off. After joining the Police Academy, he learned that he could determine if people were lying with ease and that he was suddenly much stronger than he was before. He was later told by a man he later learned was a scion himself that his disappeared father was in fact a Norse god, and suddenly many things made sense.

He remembers his first case in IA. He startled many people by going for two days without sleep or food without slowing down in the slightest in order to determine the truth in a suspected excessive use of force case.

He remembers when his father visited a second time, touching his newly-issued police baton, saying it would give him power as long as he carried it before walking away suddenly ignoring any questions Lars had. It now gives him access to his powers of Justice.
