FYI - After extensive searching of the Paizo site and forums I have finally found a LIST of Pathfinder Modules approved for use with Home Game Characters and/or Pre-Generated characters.
You can run the modules with either type then assign the Chronicle to a legal PFS (Pathfinder Society) character. The character must be of the appropriate level or a Level 1, if Level 1 the gold reward is reduced to 1398 Gold. The list I have found is...
Crypt of the Everflame
Master of the Fallen Fortress
Murder's Mark
The Godsmouth Heresy
Thornkeep
Feast of Ravenmoor
Masks of the Living God
Fangwood Keep
The Midnight Mirror
Carrion Hill
City of Golden Death
Dawn of the Scarlet Sun
From Shore to Sea
Realm of the Fellnight Queen
Cult of the Ebon Destroyers
No Response from Deepmar
Doom Comes to Dustpawn
The Harrowing
Curse of the Riven Sky
The Ruby Phoenix Tournament
Academy of Secrets
Tomb of the Iron Medusa
The Witchwar Legacy
Dragon's Demand
I hope this help those of you out there who like modules also out.

At present, sanctioned APs and the module The Dragon's Demand are the only games that can be played in home game/campaign/story mode with non-PFS PCs and have credit applied to a PFS PC.
All the other modules, both Free RPG Day and 32 page, can only be played with a real PFS PC of the appropriate level, or a module-tier legal PFS pregen.
If played with a "real" PFS PC, the credit is assigned to that PC, as appropriate.
If played with a pregen, you have two options for the chronicle sheet:
1) Hold it for one of your PCs =for when he reaches the same level as the pregen (1, 4, or 7); or
2) Assign the chronicle to a first level PC, with the gold adjusted to either 1398 for a 3 XP module, or 500 for a 1 XP Free RPG Day module.
A long time ago, during the days of "Play, Play, Play!" (Sorry, Dragnmoon!), modules were run in a slightly different format, with the option of using a leveled-up version of your PFS PC, and with gold shown for all the normal sub-tiers. This option was removed, back during Season 3, IIRC. The last module that iused it was The Ruby Phoenix Tournament, and it was specially grandfathered in for that module for only a few weeks when it was released, long since over.

Interesting... can any who responded post a link to where their information comes from? It is very possible the data I found is incorrect but I would be interested in seeing the official ruling in print also.
The only module I have run with home characters is Dragon's Demand and they are very clearly authorized in the Guide for that module. In fact you get an extra chronicle by running home characters as opposed to PFS legal characters. All my players wanted to go for the extra chronicle and make up level 1 home characters just for it.

Chapter 6 of the current Campaign Guide outlines the rules for earning PFS credit for playing Modules and APs.
Material you can play in home game mode, and still earn PFS credit, will usually have special instructions included with the Chronicle Sheets you download from the Additional Resources Page.

Thx Brian for listing the reference. Yes I have read that before, but reread it just now. It tells about using PFS regulation characters and Pre-gens but does not say Squat about using non-PFS regulation characters for modules.
Since it specifies them in the Adventure Paths one might assume, by their omission, that they cannot be used for Modules. Except for TWO discrepancies!
ONE - It says nothing about level 9+ modules. When I switched over to Pathfinder last March-April I inherited quite a few modules from a former player. These go all the way up to the Witchwar Legacy, a level 17 module with a Chronicle for level 16 - 18 PFS regulation characters?
Since Pre-Gens stop at level 7 and PFS regulation characters stop at level 12, then just WHAT characters do you play in these higher level modules? I don't think whoever wrote the Campaign Guide gave this a lot of thought?
I have been told Venture Officers have access to Paizo employees the rest of us don't have. My Venture Captain lives 60 miles away and I have never met him or talked to him. However since you are interested in my thread, if you could be so kind to use your contacts and maybe find out the answer for #ONE.
TWO - The Dragon's Demand has a GM Guild you download attached to the Chronicles. In it there is mentioned running it with non PFS regulation characters, in fact it seems to encourage it by offering a 4th Chronicle. None of the other PFS Chronicles I have include this GM Guild, although about half of them list the Chronicle as Page 3, but Pages 1 & 2 are NOT included in the PDF, these pages have been deleted at sometime...
I suspect the deleted pages were GM Guides also for those modules and like the Dragon's Demand GM Guide mentioned running the module with non PFS regulation characters? Your amount of Stars implies you have been here a long time, do you have any of those old GM Guides which are complete?
It would be a lot easier if someone in Authority at Paizo just listed a page, and kept it updated, on what Modules, Adventure Paths, and whatever could be run with non-PFS regulation characters.
Anyway Brian, thanks again for your response, and thanks in advance, for any other information you can dig up about this topic. My players are anxious to play some of these higher level modules, when their characters reach that level, but we need to know WHAT characters to work on to advance to those levels.
Best Regards - Mike

They do, it's called the Guide to Organized Play.
Sanctioned modules (old format) are available for use as though they were scenarios, with some modifications.
Adventure Paths and sanctioned modules (new format) are available for excerpted use as though they were scenarios or the alternate "campaign mode."
You can also look at the rules attached to each module's chronicle sheet if you're confused about one specific case.

Obviously you did NOT understand item TWO...
There are NO RULES attached to any chronicle I have, except for Dragon's Demand. Pages 1 & 2 are MISSING....!
If there are no specific rules attached to a Chronicle, default to the rules in the Guide. Dragon's Demand is different. That's why it comes with its own rules.

Lets try this another way. You're making a claim that all sanctioned modules can be played with a "home game" character. Since you're the one making the claim, maybe you could cite your source? As has already been pointed out, the Guide to Organized Play doesn't allow "home game" mode, unless it is a sanctioned AP, or one of the new modules like Dragon's Demand.
|
I suspect the deleted pages were GM Guides also for those modules...
More or less, yes.
...and like the Dragon's Demand GM Guide mentioned running the module with non PFS regulation characters?
Nope. They were basically a rehash of the rules presented in the Guide. Appropriately leveled PFS legal character or pregenarated character. How much Exp/Fame/gold to give if partial credit is earned, etc.
I dont have any on hand, but homegame mode was introduced with the addition of APs to the campaign, which was well after Modules were made legal for play. Dragons Demand is the only one so far where homegame mode is allowed.

When researching information on the forums you must me mindful of how old the threads are. The rules have drastically changed since the start of PFS some 6 years ago.
The old campaign level cap of 12 was removed at the start of season 4. You can now advance your PC as long as you can play sanctioned material of the appropriate level.
The highest level pregen is 7. Any sanctioned material with a higher level requirement than that does not allow the use of pregens in the game.
Dragon's Demand was the first of the "new format" modules which are double the old modules length, and covers a broad level range(Dragon's Demand being 1-7). Because of the broad level range of the module - home game mode is allowed to earn PFS credit. The chronicle sheet bundle has instructions for using home game mode.
"Old format" modules (such as witchwar legacy) are shorter, and is written with one level in mind. PFS allows you to use PFS legal characters and pregens (within one level of the module) to play the module for credit with no home game mode allowed. The chronicle sheets don't have any instructions attached.
If you look at the Adventure Path chronicle sheet bundles they have the instructions on how to run them in home game mode for PFS credit.

WinterwolfNW regarding your second point, a long time ago (around season 1-2 so 4 years now) modules were allowed to be played with PFS legal characters leveled up to the level range of the module (these rules are the missing pages 1-2 of the documents you now download), This however meant that all modules were played without risk and this was deemed a bad idea by the campaign management so all of those rules were revoked for the older modules. Hopefully this answers your second point a bit better.

People have been asking for the right to run traditional modules in "home game" mode, but it has not been granted.
When was this ever discussed beyond people complaining that they don't level up in a module or complaining that there is not enough risk to your chracters? This would be a good thing because it could both help modules to be played as intended (uausally with a level up in the middle) and also anything that helps PFS create viable home groups is a good thing in my view.

WOW... I suddenly received a WEALTH of information. My thanks to Thod and ALL the others for providing a GM somewhat new to Pathfinder with some of the game's background and history. Thanks also to Patrick for providing the link above. My own Venture Lt even recognized my "handle" and gave me a call to help clear things up.
It seems there is a lot of controversy over the module policy, especially in Patrick's link, and both sides have some good arguments. I guess those new, like me, will have to leave it to the Powers that Be to make the decision and ride along in the boat, hoping that it is all eventually sorted out for the best.
I hope they come out with more MAXI-Modules like Dragon's Demand, as I like the freedom to be able to play any Race and/or Class desired. I think most players do also...

Well, looks like all the modules scheduled to come out follow the larger format that Dragon's Demand does, so soon you will have more to choose from.
Don't forget all the sanctioned APs can also be run in home game mode.

In closing this thread I gave all the information given above to my Wed nite players last night and they decided to try and go ALL THE WAY to level 20 with regulation PFS characters.
We'll use Modules where we can, Scenarios to fill holes in the lower levels, and selected Adventure Path books to fill holes in the higher levels.
They created up new characters, all of the new Hi-Bred classes and I ran them through Slave Pits of Absalom to give them some prestige and a bit more gold. Next Wed we do Murder's Mark and will go from there.
Again, my thanks to all of you who gave me some intelligent comments, facts, and a good bit of background and history above.
Merry Christmas, to all of you who keep that holiday, and Happy New Year to all. Best - Mike (aka WinterwolfNW)

I wonder if that level increase will translate over into PFS terms. I'd expect the chronicle(s) to maybe grant 2 levels (12-14), but 3 seems unlikely to me.
But I am frequently corrected, so I anything's possible.

Well, it may be either two chronicles or three for PFS credit.
Depending on how the book breaks out, there might be chronicles for:
Tier 11-13
Tier 12-14
Tier 13-15
Tier 14-16
And, for home game mode, maybe a chronicle for 12/14/16 as the bonus, if that was a successful experiment from Dragon's Demand.
