Advice for samsaran wizard / cleric / Mystic Theurge

Advice

So I qualify for mystic theurge by being a cleric with the Trickery domain (copycat for arcane sla) and the fate inquisition (augery divine sla).

So I'm free to choose my wizard school, and yes I'm going specialist and I can choose about 5 spells to add to one of my lists as a samsaran. I'm looking for advice on what specialty I should choose, what opposition school(s) I should choose, and what spells to choose and to which list.

I'm not asking one person to answer all these questions, feel free to answer as many or as few as you like.

Thanks in advance.

If I understand correctly, the most recent FAQ says Copycat provides a DIVINE SLA, since it is granted by a divine spellcasting class.

No, it's arcane since it's based on a wizard spell, it's based on the list it's from not the source. If you have evidence to the contrary I'd like to see it.

Never mind you are right I looked it up, that's irritating. Does a lvl 3 spell grant you early entry if the requirement is a lvl 2 spell?

Quote:

Spell-Like Abilities: How do I know whether a spell-like ability is arcane or divine?

The universal monster rules for spell-like abilities states: "Some spell-like abilities duplicate spells that work differently when cast by characters of different classes. A monster's spell-like abilities are presumed to be the sorcerer/wizard versions. If the spell in question is not a sorcerer/wizard spell, then default to cleric, druid, bard, paladin, and ranger, in that order."

For spell-like abilities gained from a creature's race or type (including PC races), the same rule should apply: the creature's spell-like abilities are presumed to be the sorcerer/wizard versions. If the spell in question is not a sorcerer/wizard spell, then default to cleric, druid, bard, paladin, and ranger, in that order.

For spell-like abiities gained from a class, use the spell type (arcane or divine) of that class to determine whether the spell-like ability is arcane or divine. If the class doesn't cast spells, use the above rule for spell-like abilities from race or type.

Edit 7/15/13: Wording changed match the precedent in the universal monster rules for spell-like abilities.

Edit 9/23/13: Wording updated to clarify racial/type SLAs vs. class SLAs.

So, a SLA gained from being a cleric is a divine SLA.

Yes, as I said I looked it up, consider me schooled. Do you know if a lvl 3 spell counts for early entry if the requirement is a lvl 2 spell?

I believe also that if you have access to a 3rd-level spell (or SLA), that does not count as having access to 1st- or 2nd-level spells.
Spellcasting access is not backwards inclusive the way, for example, base attack bonus is.

Damn, do you have any rulings to back that up? I believe you are right, I just would like to see a ruling. I looked at all the wizard schools. none seemed to grant a 2nd lvl spell like. Did I miss one perhaps?

I don't think there's a specific ruling, but it requires you to be able to cast a second level spell. I would consider pushing it if you tried to use a higher level spell though. The variant heritage aasimars, as well as tieflings, have SLAs that are 2nd level, so those should work

I merely wanted to post the FAQ for others if they came and read the thread.

As far as the 3rd level SLA counting as a 2nd level? I lean towards no, but I don't know of any actual ruling on it.

As another poster pointed out, if you play as a tiefling or aasimar you can obtain a 2nd level SLA that will count and grant you access. Do keep in mind this only grants you earlier access, and you'll still want to have at least 1 level of each spellcasting class or else the increase to you spell casting abilities from MT doesn't actually increase anything.

It was ruled on a couple weeks ago that 3rd level SLAs do not meet requirements for 1st or 2nd level spellcasting.

So you can do your Samsaran Theurge, but you're going to have to do three levels of Wizard along with your one level of Cleric (assuming you take the Trickery domain or Fate inquisition).
