So I just started making a summoner and ive never made one before or played a summoning class in general. I have two pretty simple questions.
One is the question of healing your eidolon. Is expending multiple first level spells the only way to heal your eidolon? Because the way i read it he does get hp back from sleeping or going back to his plain. The best i could do is killed my own eidolon at the end of the day if he has less then half hp just so he can come back with a few more the next day. But that option is pretty gruesome and kinda against character.
Also would like to ask a little bit of a unrelated yet related question. Im thinking of taking the First-Worlder Archtype and want to know if Summon Natures Ally is better then Summon Monster. Or if there are any pros/cons to picking one over the other. I tried to find guides to compare them but i havnt found any that are specifically for pathfinder(they have lots of monsters in them that arnt on the summon monster list).
Please and Thank You for your help ^0^

1) yeah , the eidolon will not heal with time (unless you add something that makes it do that , like the evolution or an item) , so you need to spend spells , but if you have a cleric in the party , he should be able to heal the eidolon also , never forget that wands are awesome.
2) If i had to pick , i would say summon monster is better than summon nature ally , eventually the stuff you summon will be able to do lots of nice stuff , like heal and so on , also tons of them come with special templates , like celestial , which is also better. Nature allies on the other hand are well ... animals , they will hit stuff for you.
The good side of nature ally are the feats , many of them are for this not summon monster , so you can get them more stuff in the long run , to me still not worthy it , but anyway lols.
Also , you can summon nature allies WHILE YOUR EIDOLON is out , so this also helps to pay for losing the nice stuff on summon monster. (ugh here some rules change , will see if i find the link so you can check it)

So:
Anonymous Visitor 550 wrote:Does the First-World Summoner's Summon Nature Ally work like Summoner's Summon Monster (reduced casting time, increased duration, no eidolon) or is the RaW implication (standard casting time/duration, but can cast with eidolon out) intentional?Intentional.
Is here
And there is this thread
Where he will tell you that in theory , your feats wont combo for your eidolon if you dont summon it with the spell.

First Worlder is a trap as far as optimization is concearned. The Half-Elven archetype Wild Caller has similar fluff and is on par with the vanilla Summoner, maybe even better for some builds. It also trades summon monster spell-likes for summon nature's ally. Check it out before you make up your mind.

In some campaigns I can see the summon natures ally doing a bit better in straight combat.
Some of them have better base combat stats at the same levels.
However, they have no way to bypass DR. Low saves. Special abilities or spells are few. Much less out of combat utility. Etc...
If you know a lot about the campaign ahead of time. Know you are mostly going to be fighting lots of creature X. Know the group won't need (or someone else can supply) any utility or other special abilities.
Then maybe it will work out better.
But most of the time it is just a RP thing. Summon Monster is usually better.

The thing is, it's not summon monster versus summon nature's ally.
It's summon monster as a standard action and ten times the duration... versus summon nature's ally. And if you take the nature's ally one, your eidolon is also made much, much, much weaker. He'll lose about half his HP and half his BAB, and you gain almost nothing in return.

I have heard it done well. PC used the eidolon for a mount and meat shield so it being weaker wasn't that big a deal and he could have the edilon while also using summon natures ally.
Campaign revolved around fights with military units, so higher base combat stats were helpful and little need to bypass DR.Groups was already very caster heavy, so many of the special abilities were not needed.
Outdoor campaign with usually only 1 encounter per day, so greater duration not usually needed and if it was had more than enough spells left to cast again.
Yes, that was a special case campaign. That's why I agreed that it usually is not a better choice unless (list of conditions).

Welcome to summoners!
SM > SNA.
As a rule the templated monsters and magical ones you get from Summon Monster are superior than those from Summon Natures Ally.
Though if you can drop a SNA while your Eidolon is out as cited above (source?) then the gain in actions may be worth it.
To heal your pet on your own a wand of Infernal Healing (Cure Light Wounds if IH not available) plus bump up your (or your Eidolons) Use Magic Device or wait for various heal eidolon spells as you level up.)
Summoners (hybrid caster+customizable combat pet) are a very advanced class.
When I consider playing one there's a few things I am mindful of.
1. Keep my turns quick.
2. Have stat cards for my typical summons.
3. Read the rules on Summoners and Eidolons.
4. See #3.Repeat until memorized. :)
Your welcome and have fun!
