Well it took some thinking but here's what I came up with for my version of the adventuring chef class. Like I say I'm really not married to the Combat Chef name and I'd like to find something more fitting of an adventurer.
Here's what I have so far, which admittedly isn't much, but I'd like some help fleshing it out.
NEW CLASS: COMBAT CHEF (I'm definitely NOT married to this name. It's a place holder until I can think of something better)
New Skill:
Perform: Teppanyaki (Maybe) This depends on how I initially handle how the Far Eastern Lands are dealt with in context to the rest of the campaign setting I'm developing. Though the skill and class could certainly be slotted into any other setting as I'm trying to make it generic right now, with it's own campaign flavor to be added later.
New Weapons: Chef Class (Exotic/Unique)
Simple:
light melee weapons
Fillet Knife 1gp 1d2/1d3 18-20/ x3 ----- ½ lb S/P Chef
Nakiri Knife 1gp 1d3/1d4 ----/x3 ----- 1 lb S Chef
Boning Knife 1gp 1d2/1d3 18-20/x3 ----- ½ lb S/P Chef
Martial Weapons
one handed martial
Meat Tenderizer (treat like Warhammer)
Cleaver (treat like Battle Ax)
Skewer (treat like Rapier)
Reinforced Ladle (treat like Light Mace?)
Tuna Cutter (long sword fillet knife) (Possible longsword type scimitar)
Two Handed:
Baker's Peel (Great Club damage; +2 bonus to trip attempts, or knock down)
Ranged: ?
Cooking Methods:
Roasting:
Roasting—Barbecuing--Grilling/Broiling--Rotisserie--Searing
Baking:
Baking—Baking Blind
Boiling:
Boiling-Blanching-Braising-Coddling-Double Steaming-Poaching-Simmering-
Smothering-Steaming-Steeping-Stewing
Frying:
Frying-Hot Salt Frying-Hot Sand Frying-Pan Frying-Pressure Frying-Sauteing-Stir Frying
Smoking:
Smoking
Five Tastes:
Sweet
Sour
Salty
Bitter
Umami (Savory)
Types of Cooking:
Rustic
Ordinary
Gourmet
Royal
Hit Die: D8
Starting Wealth:
Skill Ranks per Level: 4+Int
Class Skills: Craft: Any (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Knowledge: Arcana (Int), Knowledge: Local (Int), Knowledge: Nature (Int), Linguistics (Int), Profession: Any (Wis), Survival (Wis)
Weapon Proficiencies: A Combat Chef is automatically proficient in all Exotic Weapons with the Chef descriptor.(I'm considering adding one or two others, but I want to keep it with the them as much as possible if I can, suggestions are very much needed here)
Armor Proficiencies: Combat Chefs may wear Light and Medium Armor but are not trained in the use of Shields.
BAB: As Rogue (not sure what the technical term is, or how to make a table lol)
Saves: Good Fort for sure, maybe good Ref to avoid kitchen accidents, low Will
Class Features:
Recipes, Methods & Styles:
Beginning at 1st level a Combat Chef begins to learn secret techniques to infuse his recipes with supernatural flair. These start from the Rustic style going up to Royal as the Chef progresses. Using the various flavors adds differing effects.
A Combat Chef keeps his recipes in a book (much like a Wizard's spell book) and begins with five first level recipes plus a number equal to his intelligence modifier (maybe ½ the modifier? It depends on how the recipes turn out)
Skill Focus: Craft: Cooking A Combat Chef gains Skill Focus: Craft: Cooking as a bonus feat at first level.
Pepper Bomb: Black Pepper (sneezing): At first level and every three levels there after the Combat Chef learns to create special bombs using various kinds of peppers. These bombs are single target effects and may be thrown x number of times (per round or day?) The Black Pepper Bomb requires a Fortitude save DC 10+the Chef's Int modifier + ½ his Chef level or the target is distracted by sneezing for 1d3 rounds.
Pepper Bomb: Scorpion Pepper (knock out by overkill): This is the highest level bomb in the Chef's arsenal. The target must make a Fortitude save DC 10 + the Chef's Int modifier + ½ the Chef's level (levels in Chef to be clear) or be knocked out in 1d3 rounds from the massive heat of the pepper. A roll of nat 1 indicates total failure and instant knock out. Creatures with Fire Resistance 10 or higher are utterly immune to this effect. Those with Fire Resistance 5 or lower add their resistance to the results of the Fort save. (They're used to heat.) (yes this is based on a real world pepper, the Trinidad Scorpion Pepper. It's the hottest pepper in the world, currently) (other penalties could include a minus to hit from watery eyes, distraction from other spice heat related issues, or whatever. Just a thought)

Scrap the perform skill and make it a level based class ability, the way that Wild Empathy is. As a skill, you are simply putting a tax on skill points.
I would also simplify the weapons. Giving the chef an affinity for kitchen utensil improvised weapons would probably do.
I only added Teppanyaki as a type of performance skill because, technically, it kind of is. It's a performance based on food preparation, western creation in the performance aspect with the juggling of the knives and such (I think) but based on Japanese cutting and preparation techniques,
Granted it doesn't have to be, it was just an after thought that I thought might be cool. It's really more of a modern creation anyway. Like I said, I just thought it would look cool as a performance thing.

You also need Brew Potion as a Feat. Maybe not potions as liquids in a bottle, but certainly magically enhanced foodstuffs.
I think the Bard Archetype Geisha might be along the lines you are looking for. The Tea Ceremony could be substituted for preparing an inspirational light meal before setting out to butcher the Big Bad Enemy.

I'm not familiar with that Bard Archetype to be honest. Magically enhanced food is basically what the recipes do. I was just trying to figure out mechanics instead of just calling them infusions like the Alchemist. (Maybe a variant of Brew Potion.....that might be doable)
The inspirations for the class come from a couple of different sources actually.
One is obviously Ukyo from Ranma 1/2 (using the baker's peel to trip people and knock them down seems to fit with that)
Another might not be as well known. In one of the episodes of Slayers (I think it was in Slayers Next, though I could be wrong) Lina was obsessed with trying Dragon cuisine and there was only one chef in the city who could make it. (The dude was hard core and one shotted the dragon with a kitchen knife) Now obviously I don't intend my homebrew class to be that broken but it's kind of where I was getting the idea to use their kitchen cutlery and certain tools as weapons. Just seemed to fit when I was writing it down :) (I was maybe going to add another knife or two, maybe one more one handed weapon but that was it. I wanted to keep their weapon selection somewhat limited)

I'm not familiar with that Bard Archetype to be honest.
If you don't have the APG then a quick peek at the d20 pfsrd should provide all the info you need.
Essentially, the Geisha is an unarmoured and poorly be-weaponed Bard who has Scribe Scroll and the Tea Ceremony in exchange for not being able to run opponents through with a rapier.
The Tea Ceremony allows an ally 10 minutes of Inspire Courage, Inspire Competence, Inspire Greatness, or Inspire Heroics. It takes 10 minutes to prepare (about enough time to prepare a light repast) and 4 rounds of Bardic Performance per ally to be affected. Best used just before a major encounter.

Perhaps a level-based ability could be Flambe (or some other culinary equivalent), where the Combat Chef performs a full attack, dousing the enemy in alcohol and setting fire to them.
Also, I think the name Combat Chef is just fine.
I hadn't thought of that actually. very cool :) thanks :)

Give the perform skill a name that encompasses other cultures then. What if I wanted to play Tom Cruise from the movie Cocktail?
For clarification purposes: Japanese style Teppanyaki is a style of cuisine apparently and started in Japan. It was western-influenced food in Japan. (I did not know this btw) The customers do watch the chef prepare the food so I'm presuming that showcasing one's skill does take a bit of panache.
American style Teppanyaki is where the chefs juggle the knives and utensils, and really put on a show for the customers. This is where they'll flip a piece of shrimp into the customer's mouth, spit an egg with a spatula, etc.
Those kind of fit a Chef I think now that I think about it, it's not a necessary skill but it is kind of cool.
As for the Tom Cruise character from Cocktail: I haven't actually seen that movie but I think you mean where the bartender juggles the bottles around while he mixes the drinks right? I know there's more to it than that, I just don't know if there's a thing that they call that.

| 1 person marked this as a favorite. |
well maybe you can use this for ideas.
Actually that's where I did get the initial idea :) I've just been trying to put my own spin on it.

What I was getting at is to call the skill Perform (culinary) or something like that. Its vague, but no more than a bunch of other skills. And as far as the Cocktail thing, that was meant to be a joke.

Combat Chef V.3
A couple of changes here. Still working on a recipe list and what they do, I'll include that when I get a better feel for it. Any suggestions for class abilities or what the two ??? pepper bombs should do would be appreciated.

Secret Strike: Every Chef knows that you can't just go around hacking at animals and get the best meats and other prime ingredients so the Combat Chefs developed the Secret Strike as a means of keeping the integrity of the animal's body so that the best parts could be harvested.
Beginning at level ten the Combat Chef may spend three rounds studying a beast or magical beast opponent after making a successful Know: Nature, or Know: Arcana to identify it. At the end of the third round the Combat Chef may declare the Secret Strike when attacking the creature using a piercing weapon. On a successful hit, if the victim of such a secret strike fails a Fortitude save (DC 10 + the Combat Chef's class level + the chef's Int modifier) against the kill effect, the creature dies . (Number of times per day on this is tricky. It's limited to beasts and magical beasts, but it's also a death attack....the more I thought about it the more this attack made sense in a flavor context)
Pepper Bomb: Cayenne: ?
Pepper Bomb: Ghost Pepper: ?
Pepper Bomb: Scorpion Pepper (knock out by overkill): This is the highest level bomb attained at level (say 13?) in the Chef's arsenal. The death attack is interesting.
For the flambé, the recipes, pepper bombs, etc, you may want do so something similar to witch's hexes or rogue tricks or alchemist discoveries or rage powers or etc... (at least in terms of progression)
Well the recipes are kind of like their spells/infusions. They prepare x number per day (by prepare I mean cook x number per day. They hold the recipes in books, gain them as Wizards and can purchase them from other Chefs) and can hold a certain number in prepared containers (kept hot through....something, maybe the magic that empowers the food?) The party, or a certain number of targets, would eat the prepared recipes and gain certain bonus for a static amount of time (at least that's how I'm considering it right now)
The Flambe attack and Bombs were just to add a little versatility, I could see them being cooking tricks though. I'd have to think of some others to add to broaden the choices. I still don't know what to do with the two other bombs though lol
