Can Restoration be used as lesser restoration?

Rules Questions

Okay, this came up in my campaign just now.

Restoration: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/spells/restoration.html#_restoration

Can it be used as lesser restoration while still being a level 4 spell?

as in, while taking up a level 4 spell slot, can it be used to cure 1d4 ability damage without needing 100g worth of diamond dust?

Dark Archive

No, you could of course prepare a lesser restoration in the slot if you require, restoration is best left as empty slots until you need it due to its long casting time. At the time of preparation you can then choose to prep either a lesser restoration or a normal one depending on what you need.

Yeah, the confusion came from the words:

This spell functions like lesser restoration, except that it also dispels...

Shadow Lodge

I agree with Caderyn that the answer to your question is no.

It is its own spell and has different effects from the lesser version.

Shadow Lodge

I heard there was an errata for Restoration that meant it was actually a 3 round casting time like Lesser Restoration (not 1 minute). Casting time isn't an issue (but the level slot is).

Silver Crusade

From the Errata for Core Rulebook, 6.0:

Page 334—In the restoration spell, in the casting time
entry, change “1 minute” to “3 rounds”.

Find the errata HERE.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Does not change much in my original statement though, the spell takes a sufficient time to cast that one is unlikely to be casting it in a time critical situation like a battle, so leaving empty slots is the best option for being able to cast these sorts of niche spells when needed.

Lantern Lodge

Restoration cures ALL damage from one score instead of 1d4. It is better then Lesser Restoration and therefore takes a higher spell slot.

its a good idea to carry a few hundred gp in diamond dust on any character. never know when you'll need a restore, or stoneskin.

This, I'm not sure why you'd want to use it like lesser restoration.

The reason is that 1d4 damage doesn't cost 100g in diamond dust. We didn't realize you can put a lower level spell into a higher slot.

We were confused due to the wording. It's just flat out misleading.

In that first link, it says "his spell functions like lesser restoration"
however, the rest of the spell text counters that statement, which lead to confusion

So your whole issue boils down to the 100gp the spell costs to cast?

Out of the 23500 that a character should have at the level you are able to cast restoration. And your GM should be keeping wealth by level pretty well, which should hopefully include allowing you to recoup the money you spend on such spells and consumable items.

'this spell functions like lesser restoration'

usually just means the stuff like target, duration, casting time, saves. etc. sometimes.

There was a time where everybody tracks his components for every spell! Three balls of guano, 9 feathers, 4 pearls, 11 handful of sand, etc. Sometimes you need X and you dont have it or an opportunity to purchase it.

Today you can have such problems too depending on the adventure you are playing. Lost on an island, trapped in a dungeon, etc.

Even without going to that extent, it's still possible the GM would make you say what expensive components you're buying ahead of time, since those do cost something. Many of them are multi-purpose, I think, but if you don't have them, no one's going to sell them to you mid-dungeon.
