Hi All,
Firstly, loving the game : ) I've been scoping the forums and FAQ daily to check up on various rules issues I've encountered and to make sure I'm playing it correctly. This is the first time I've posted, though.
I searched for this answer, but did not see it anywhere.
OK, so.
In the rulebook, concerning the exploration of closed locations, it says, "Characters may move to closed locations and, if there are any cards there, may explore and encounter those cards as normal". (p. 13)
For the three cases in which you can close a location (defeating a henchman or villain, or running out of cards) you would not have cards there to explore. Defeating the henchman and villain in that location causes you to banish all of the cards.
Is there some other way to have cards in a closed location and to explore there? Or perhaps this was just a clarification that may be relevant in a future expansion.
I've actually explored closed locations before, but I'm 98% sure it was because I left the rules out for dead... In any event, I don't remember how I managed to get to that point and haven't been able to replicate it since.
Thank you for any help!

I've pondered a house rule that allows any characters at a location when it is permanently closed by defeating the villain, to choose one card from the remaining Location deck and recharge it.
I understand why the game is set up as it is, but it almost feels like a penalty to lose out on (say) a magic weapon or cool item because you defeated the villain before you had a chance to get it.
It's a random card game: I know. But the rule change is a small way to reward success within the confines of the existing location deck.

It makes you think about whether or not to close a location after defeating a henchman. If the. Blessing deck is tall enough we will debate going through all the cards rather than closing immediately. It depends on what we think is left in the deck
Agreed. In a game with lots of players, you usually can't afford to leave the location open, unless your team has already closed a couple of others, so you just need to leave someone there to close it temporarily when the villain comes up. But when I play with a smaller number (solo, sometimes only 3 or 4 if the scenario's going well), we frequently leave "shopping" locations open, where we know the card types in that location deck includes card types we want to acquire.

I too often look at these cards and curse at what's going back to the box, but I think an automatic acquire/recharge (especially by multiple characters) would be too much. That would be better (IMO) than most of the "acquire a card" scenario rewards. By this, I mean that choosing a card, even from a limited selection, is preferable to pulling a random card of a particular type out of from the box.
It also seems unfair to those who remain at other locations to temp-close them, or who lend their support from a distance. You also run into issues where there may not be enough boons to go around, so someone may get left out.
I do like the concept, but I might adopt a toned-down version: the character who actually defeated the villain picks a single boon from that location's deck, then attempts to acquire it normally.

Wait, do you banish the cards if you just beat a henchmen, and there's no villain? Last time I looked at it, I understood it to mean you banish all non villain cards if there is a villain in the deck, but if there is not one, you leave the deck alone. Did I just misunderstand?
"If you succeed at meeting the “When Closing” requirement,
search through the location deck, take out the villain if it is there, and banish the rest of the cards."
Meaning if it's not there, just banish the rest of the cards..

Wanted to point out that I didn't notice the "game designer" after your name when I posted that so I feel like an idiot now for agreeing with what you obviously knew. LOL.
