I recently moved and we decided that we should ship everything that we wanted to keep and sell off our furniture because the cost to move the furniture exceeded what we felt it was worth. We shipped close to 20 boxes. 1 box had my entire Pathfinder collection (including the Tome of Horrors book). For some reason we insured every other box but somehow missed that one - and it was lost. I got a notification that they found the label but couldn't find the box. I taped that sucker on with what seemed like a full roll of tape. I am pretty bummed out about it.

Not asking for replacements. I am already buying some of them again. Additionally I have a good job so replacing them will not be the end of the world. I am thinking about getting the new yoga 2 that comes out in October and going digital. It was a learning experience. The Tome is the only one that really gets me.

In the UK, it is not uncommon for your household insurance to also protect your property while it is in transit. I've no idea how things work in the US, but it may be worth reading the terms if you have a similar policy. In the same way, if you paid for the postage by credit-card, it might be worth looking at the terms there as they often also insure you against certain calamities.
Was there anything inside the box with your contact details on it?

Thanks for the sympathy. I am still calling around and trying to figure out what happened. They tell me that the box was probably shipped off to the mail recovery center in Atlanta. I had to put in a request for them to look for it and described the box and its contents. However, I have read that they typically never recover the mail at the recovery center. I will keep trying.
I did pay for the shipping with a credit card. I will definitely look into the credit card insurance.

Who says I didn't cry like and ugly, ugly baby? My wife feels really bad because she is the one who absent mindlessly forgot to add insurance when she printed off the label (it was the last package). I told her not to worry about it and then secretly locked it away in the vault inside my head to use the next time I do something bad.

Man if something like that happened to me I would go into cardiac arrest. Like immediately. All of the books i have were painstakingly acquired through cousins visiting UK and US, also some i ordered and had to wait for months for them to come. Several i yanked out of grubby customs officer hands (they like to eat food that gets mailed to my country).
Bottom line, i feel for you. I feel your pain.
I really hope that package turns up in Atlanta. Fingers crossed.

Oh, right... one thing. "I forgot" can mean many different things.

I can see how you would think that. However, she plays in my group frequently. Additionally, I landed a job and we had to move in 2 weeks so we were both stressed out with all of the packing and cleaning we had to do. We have the ability to weigh packages and print labels from home so we sat there and did it together. We had a few at the end that were media mail and she just didn't click the button for insurance when we were on the last one. To be honest it was a bit my fault too because she didn't ask about the value and I didn't notice (even though she had for all the other boxes).

*Update*
I finally got in touch with someone at the USPS Recovery center. They told me that since I was mailed the label that was on my box she was sure that the box and the books became separated (box busted open). If that was the case, the books would be grouped together and sent to the Mail Recovery Center to be processed. However, that particular department is still working on received items from June. So there is still hope that they will find my items when they get to them. It just might take awhile.
I am fairly surprised that the box busted open. The box I used was from my work and is used to ship scientific equipment with - very thick and sturdy. Additionally, I used tons of tape. The whole box was pretty much covered with tape that wrapped several times around each length. Since it was media mail I am inclined to think that they opened it to make sure that it was books and then did a s!&* job taping it back up.

Man, if I needed more convincing to never ship anything and just rely on U-hauling it myself, that'd do it.
it's up to you. Usually its done to make sure unusually heavy boxes privately mailed do not include the major no-nos: firearms, biohazard, fireworks, etc. Other times, boxes can and will collapse under their own weight, usually due to mishandling. Also there is a chance that the postal officer noticed the type of box being used, saw it repurposed and got suspicious.

Ugh.
I'd be tempted to bake rat poison into a cake, warn my friend about it, then mail it to them.

With my experience at UPS boxes filled with books tend to break open( though oddly enough Amazon Boxes break open the most often...my thinking is they use very cheap tape). I don't know how many books you shipped or the exact boxes you used but people should remember these boxes are put into truck in transit...alot can happen in the back of those trucks on the road.
My recommendation for you...or anyone shipping books is to break them up into smalled bundles. A big box of books will most likely break open. Smaller ones might...but tend to be more easy to retape.
