I would think that you would move to an enemy and vital strike at the beginning of combat. Without knowing your exact build I would guess on subsequent rounds you would deal more damage by full attack than by Vital Striking, especially if you have 2 or more attacks. The majority of damage usually comes from strength and power attack, not from weapon damage dice. So try a full attack instead of vital strike?

This character is designed as a "one big hit every round" guy. He'll never full attack. It might not be optimal but that's ok.
VanceMadrox, I'll look into that rage power. Anything else?

With improved feint you can feint as a move action. Better for rogues.
For a crazy tactic, use the move action with Acrobatics to "wire-fight/climb/flip" something near you for a one round advantage, get the +1 high ground advantage or more sanely get the flank bonus if you can help your friends. You may fail and buy a AOO at worst.

get the bestial leaper rage power- it lets you single move and vital strike at any point during that move (though your movement provokes normally). that kind of hit and move fighting forces opponents to move in order to attack you (which means that they don't get to full attack either). and, as has already been mentioned don't underestimate the value of good positioning.
are you focused on a single weapon? with a lucerne hammer (or bardiche if you're looking for crits) you could blast someone with your single big shot and move away- when they close to melee range you get an AoO and they only get one attack; on your turn you can use bestial leaper to move 5' (back into the polearm's functional range), make your big attack, and move at least 10' away to make the enemy come at you again. rinse and repeat until its dead (which shouldn't take too long) or gets sick of your game and just goes after someone else (at which point you follow and beat it mercilessly).
