Paladin / Gunslinger + Divine Bond AC + Double Hackbut = Awesome Machinegun Crew!?!?!?

Rules Questions

Hello All,

Say a Gunslinger 1/Paladin 4 with a big gun has chosen the Animal Companion option for their Divine Bond at level 5. The Animal Companion is an Ape (opposable thumbs and Int of 6). The ape gets two feats – Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Firearms) and Rapid Reload (Double Hackbut).

A double hackbut holds 2 rounds.

Would this ape be able to reload the Paladin’s Double Hackbut for him during the Paladin’s turn?

Here is the plan…

Round 1 -
-Ape sets up Double Hackbut (full round action)
-Paladin casts a spell, detects evil, buffs the party, or something else (doesn’t really matter what)

Round 2 -
-Ape delays action
-Paladin fires two shots from the Double Hackbut
-Ape takes his turn to re-load the weapon (interrupting the Paladin’s turn)
-Paladin continues his turn and fires off the third shot

Rinse and Repeat.

Or, if both had Quickdraw, would the Paladin be able to pass his firearm off to the ape (for the ape to reload) and have it passed back as a free action?

Would either of these ideas actually work?

I think not. Because drawing a weapon take a move action. And that would be for a weapon you have on you. Quick Draw would allow you to draw as a free action, but the reloaded weapon is in the apes hands, not yours.

Did you get an email from Mike Brock saying you could do this in PFS?

Well seeing as how Double Hackbut is not allowed in PFS, I would take that as a negatory Taenia.

Otherwise the concept sounds pretty fun. If this were for a home game I would allow it.

The delayed action wouldn't happen until after the paladin's turn. You would have to do a readied action (as that could resolve 'during' another action). But even that is 'iffy' as reloading a weapon typically means it is in your possession.

This is would be one place I would suggest a house rule and make up a teamwork feat, it honestly would fit the situation perfectly.

Wait, what? How do you get an ape? You can get a horse at Paladin level 5...

Quote:
The second type of bond allows a paladin to gain the service of an unusually intelligent, strong, and loyal steed to serve her in her crusade against evil. This mount is usually a heavy horse (for a Medium paladin) or a pony (for a Small paladin), although more exotic mounts, such as a boar, camel, or dog are also suitable. This mount functions as a druid's animal companion, using the paladin's level as her effective druid level. Bonded mounts have an Intelligence of at least 6.

Not necessarily a horse, but I'm still myself for where I can get a monkey for a paladin.

The intent seems to be pretty clear that what you're getting is a mount, not an animal companion. They are similar, but not identical. Unless you can ride a gorilla\monkey, I don't think it fits the class feature.

I agree. There a rules for creatures unsuitable to be a mount but I think that covers things more like a rhino than an ape.

However there are feats to have an ape.
Skill Focus (Knowledge Nature) -> Eldritch Heritage (Sylvan) -> Boon Companion (Optional)

Which would make your weapon become your bond focus instead.

In a fire team we would call the ape's position a gunner's assistant.

Why not give the ape his own hackbut?

Can the monkey hold onto the Double Hackbut while the Paladin does as well?

If so, the gunslinger archetype Gunner Squire would actually work hilariously well.

As the 3rd Level deed and the 2nd Level class feature only care if the monkey has his paws on the gun and both require full round actions.

This would require having an awakened monkey which is one of the big no-nos in terms of PFS restrictions.

You would be much better off just taking the Squire feat from Knights of the Inner Sea and having an actual human being acting as your gunner's assistant.
