Guess you will find out this week.

If its got all these people on board, I am going to be watching this like a hawk. This can be very cool if all the people can work well together and pull off an amazing project. Is it a Setting? A New Race book? A Ultra Mega campaign adventure? Is it a kickstarter project? So many questions, and you have me waiting until after Gencon? ARRRRRRGGGGHHHH!

They are all going to be at GenCon. Did I win?
Nope. Says Jason from Seattle, where he'll be all week working on his own Secret Plan. On top of this Secret Plan. As of this moment, I'm on DOUBLE SECRET PROBATION!

I will say this: When I pitched the idea of it to all the people involved, they all said they were very interested. Let's just say this will give them a lot of freedom to be VERY creative on this project. Can you imagine what a project with SKR and Clinton Boomer being VERY creative is going to look like?

That depends. Are all the sharp objects put away?

No. That makes it even MORE interesting, :-)

Simply an April Fool's joke gone wrong. Apologies were made, Razor Coast has seen the light of day, and people should move on and not live in the past.

So uninterested in marketing strategies like this Louis. If you have something to tell us don't be coy or tease. Tell us. This only makes me despise the "business" model of 3PPs, whose illustrious company I have now joined. Sorry to be a bit grumpy. ;P
You have assembled a fantastic cast for "something". Great!

FWIW (although I no longer apologise for being grumpy) announcements along the lines of "we've got something big to tell you, but it's a secret!" are a turn off for me too. I dont really see it as a 3PP thing - paizo do it from time to time (the various pseudo-announcements in the miniatures line being one common example) as do WotC.
.No doubt the fact it's so prevalent means it probably works, but I thought I'd pass along my antipathy anyhow.

:-) Jason Stoffa is co-owner and writer for Fat Goblin Games along with Rick Hershey. They are the designers behind the Shadows of Vathak setting amongst other items.

If you do a search here on these message boards, you'll find ot. Sufice it to say it was an attempt at a publicity stunt / April Fool's joke that many felt was in pretty poor taste that caused a big fire storm and quite a negative backlash.

Agreed. A little while ago, Paizo put forth a "new" item that would be announced at PaizoCon. They let it stew for weeks with some excitement generated and...it was the same old GM's screen in blue with the iconics not found on the first screen.
It is a good strategy for generating buzz, but the payoff had better be worth it.

Oceanshieldwolf you do understand in marketing circles have you see the ad, read the ad, have some type of feeling about the ad and having you actually respond about the ad (negative or positive), the ad I created is considered successful. What good advertising does is make you interested and we have done that. Better still, we are actually going to have a pretty big announcement about this. I mean when was the last time you saw so over 15 3PP, Paizo staff and top freelancers being part of announcement for something for Pathfinder?
You have assembled a fantastic cast for "something". Great!
And that is why we are attempting to build so much interest in this. I think fans of Pathfinder, 3PP and store retailers will like what we have planned.

When your yearly marketing budget is about 100 time bigger than our, we have to do things that are highly effective and know that work. :-)
No doubt the fact it's so prevalent means it probably works, but I thought I'd pass along my antipathy anyhow.
But once again, I got you to directly interact with me about this project (which I think you will be happy to hear about AND support) which for us is a big win.
Ditto. While I was certainly drawn to the topic, now I'm just pissed. Have no idea why this will draw more people than simply stating: we gathered a great team and want to do THIS.
If this post which has been up for 2 days has you pissed, how do you deal waiting for movie trailers and upcoming movies? Come on, you are pissed after two days? Really? ;-)
Have a little patience people. Remember it is a virtue.

It's not really a budget issue. A post with actual details costs the same as a post of names.
As I said, a lot of people do it and I don't really begrudge you for doing the same. There's just no point "voting with my wallet" if I don't tell you why, is there?

You did get a comment from me, although I don't quite understand why that's a win - personally I don't buy "all publicity is good publicity" (I think that's what marketers say when they've screwed up).
I support lots of 3PP projects but its now less likely I'll support this one. I may well be an outlier, but it's worth you knowing that.

It's not that I'm impatient, it's you using kindergarten teacher tricks to hold my attention that pisses me off. An to be fair, I'm pissed that it's working. I'm still here waiting to see what's going on. But, while I have curiosity, this kind of approach makes it more likely that I will NOT support your project (unless it's the monster book you've been asking about). And either way you're not getting any money without me knowing what I'm buying.
And I never watch movie trailers. Hate those things.

Just to derail this advertisement a little more...
Yes Louis. I completely understand, having been raised with critical analysis as a virtue, and to be skeptical. And, became, through watching the world, completely cynical. I am currently neck deep in an Marketing unit as we speak, investing time further into your advertisement when I should be studying value propositions and the four P's.
Unlike Steve, I do begrudge you and every marketer that preys on anticipation to wrench interest, rather than offer information to excite. I've purchased your campaign setting, visited your blog many times, even watched your vlog once. I like the creativity that you engender, I applauded your "support 3PP" banners from a ways back.
However I feel that your marketing method is hucksterism and hyperbole, which is fine, I respect that you are committed to your process and approach, and I also commend your gusto and energy! I do find it grating and too loud in the sense that the Desiderata derides. Hmm, Desiderataderides. Never noticed that before. Thanks! ;P
But that's me. I'm a grumpy ol' wolf who occasionally get's really upset over tiny things. And this is tiny in the scheme of things.
I'm am actually excited about SECRET PLAN X on the one hand, but completely annoyed. "Annnouncements" like this do nothing to garner my support. I'm not sure why you would want to turn anybody off, regardless of what your market research tells you. I think the thing that bugs me is the "business" approach modeled here, I guess I had hoped there could be an island or oasis of something approaching humility and calm.
I find that I get even more annoyed when I pipe up with a opinion expressing dissatisfaction - there is no "It's unfortunate that you feel that way" or "Interesting you should say that" or "what makes you say that?" but yet more hyperbole or counters to my dissatisfaction with no regard for my comment. There seems to be no ability on your behalf to engage empathetically, only more steamroller of "this is gonna be great and now YOU are part of the marketing machine!!!" That isn't public relations, it's a smack in the face.
Oh. And here's some more free advertising. Gotta make this post worth something to you.

+1 to that. Patience is a virtue, but then so is free information. Publicly withholding information to derive economic benefit is an intergenerational moral crime. It degrades all who participate in its sordid existence. ;P
Seriously though Louis, may your project succeed and bring lasting benefit to 3PPs and the Pathfinder community at large. Just thought I'd give you the benefit of my caustic thoughts.

...and by the time you've finished watching the trailer you might as well not watch the movie it's pretending to be a trailer about. It either a: completely explains the entire movie, including presenting 90% of the crux and plot moments in the film or b: presents new scenes not in the actual film to further entice you. Fantastic.
If I want to watch a movie I will never watch the trailer for it. As soon as I think I might want to watch the film the "trailer" is for I cease watching the trailer.... [/threadjack]

Not if it turns people off from your product. Not sorry dude, this is the flimsiest excuse I've ever seen. Bad show. Poor form.
Also, the majority of us AREN'T in marketing circles. We're just customers. And while your marketers might consider getting a response, even a negative one, a marketing success, most customers don't enjoy getting their chain yanked.

NINJA'D by Orthos and Evil Midnight Lurker due to my inability to stop myself from writing anything less than an essay...
Add me to the list of people who are irritated by this kind of marketing tactic. While I'm interested to see what you're announcing, I'd prefer to just be told "Hey guys, we're doing X, and we've got Y working on it. How freaking awesome is that?" than "Hey guys, we've got Y working on this project, but we aren't going to tell you what is yet..."
I'd also like to point out that the comparison to movie trailers is a fairly worthless one, given that we generally at least have some idea of what we're getting (when I was waiting for the trailer for Pacific Rim, I already knew it was going to contain giant robots and kaiju fighting, I just hadn't seen the visual style yet). If we're talking about waiting for the actual movie itself, then the trailer has given us an even better idea of what we're waiting for. Sure, it may not be accurate, but we have something to base our expectations on.
Now, compare that to what you've done.
Movie trailer: "Here's a movie that's coming up. You can see a bit of what it looks like, see who the actors are, and find out a bit about the story. It's also coming out around this time. Doesn't it look great!"
Your announcement: "Here's a bunch of authors. We're working on something called Secret Plan X. You can't know what it is yet. Now get excited with pretty much no info beyond our names."
Not really in the same ballpark, or even the same game. And before anyone mentions it, yes, I get just as annoyed if I start seeing "Director X is working on secret film project" stuff.
As Steve Geddes has mentioned above, this doesn't mean I'm 100% not going to support whatever you're doing. But it does make it far less likely, as whatever it is now has to be impressive enough to move past my irritation with a) the way you're announcing it, and b) the impression I'm getting of smug self satisfaction from responses to people raising their concerns with this kind of marketing strategy. Telling people that they're playing straight into your hands when they're already annoyed isn't a particularly clever idea, nor is throwing winky faces at them and making light of their concerns. I'm the first to admit that I'm a right stubborn bastard, and stuff like that just makes me dig my heels in even more.
I hope I'm pleasantly surprised and impressed by whatever you announce, enough to actually reconsider this, but I'm not holding my breath.
All of that said, I do hope that whatever you're doing goes well for you. Just be aware that the way you're marketing it is straight up irritating at least some of your target audience.
