Beguiler-Esque build?

Advice

Silver Crusade

Hey guys, Recently I've been interested in making a beguiler like character, but not to sure the best way to go about this. Incase you don't know ( I'm sure most of you do ) a Beguiler is a spell caster who focuses on charming people, hypnotizing people, and using illusions to trick and fool people. I'd appreciate the help for creating this character, Cheers!

Pointbuy is likely 20/25.

Bard variant. Look through all the archetypes of Bard and I'm sure if one won't fit, you can create one. The spell-list is already pretty much there for doing what you want, it's just tweaking the core abilities to match the flavour.

Silver Crusade

Oh, I forgot to mention all of it has to be Paizo. I doubt my GM will allow tweaking of abilities if he doesn't have to, Sorry! I'll look through the bard variants though.

Then I dunno what to tell you. As Dabbler said, pick a Bard archetype I guess. There's bound to be a couple that seem decent.

Spell focus enchantment an greater spell focus enchantment. Witches and bards both have tons of the mind control spells.

Kitsune Sorcerer (Fey) will rule with enchantment DC's. Infernal and Arcane bloodlines will also help (consider crossblooded and/or Eldrtich Heritage.)

A witch with the trickery patron can work well, but won't be Charisma as primary stat, with 20/25 point buy you should be able to cope though.

Wizard/Enchanter should not be overlooked either - some nice options there too with sub schools.

Plan for the immune to mind effects /non-humanoids with scrolls etc or at least have a plan of something you can contribute in the encounters where none of your main spells can effect the enemy - even if it's UMDing a healing wand or aiding another.

Glibness is a great spell (consider a ring of Spell Knowledge IV if you went sorcerer) and a maxed out bluff allows al kinds of nonsense. If you can somehow crowbar in Telepathy (Lashunta?) you can pretend to be peoples 'inner voice' or even their Deity (might get you into trouble!)

Kitsune Crossblooded Fey/Infernal Enchantment focused Sorcerer. +1/4 DC enchantment spells as a favored class bonus, +dex/cha -str stats. SpFoc/GrSpFoc.

4th Level, No items, 1st level Spell DC:21, 2nd 22, etc.
8th Level, No items, 1st level spell DC:23, 2nd 24, 3rd 25.

That's the highest I can come up with, but infernal-fey Foxfolk is a very anime type look/feel, so not necessarily welcome in all circles.

Alternately, a Bard or Witch with a single level dip into crossblooded fey/infernal sorcerer gets the +2spell DC boost on their spells as well. Any +Cha or +Int race works at that point, you can look at favored class bonuses to see what jumps out at you.

Silver Crusade

If I had to pick one over the other chances are I'd try to be more illusion oriented rather than enchantment. I appreciate the advice though! Will look into it.

For an Illusion-Focused build go Gnome Sorcerer with the Arcane Bloodline. Get GSF Illusion and Robes of Arcane Heritage so you'll have +5 DC for illusion spells by level 11. Use shadow spells for blasting/utility. Wandering Star Motes and Phantasmal Web are goood save-or-suck spells. And since you can get Spell Focus as a bloodline feat, it shouldn't be too hard to get it and greater Spell Focus for enchantment.

Edit: Oh, and get persistent spell. It's a great way to make your illusions work, especially with the arcane bloodline's arcana.

TG, Why Infernal over something like shadow? It doesn't seem Infernal gives anything special.

The Sandman bard is the beguiler of PF. He gets sneak spell, some sneak attack, a strong suite of enchantments since he's a bard, and other tricks.

He also gets some of the Spell Thief's abilities, so he's a merge of the two.

But be warned. This is one of those archetypes that drastically changes the focus of the class, so your teammates may be confused :)

Infernal increases the DC of charms, Fey increases the DC of compulsions. Also, Infernal has Spell Penetration as one of it's bonus feats, which you'll want anyways.

They are subsets of the Enchantment school, so you need both to increase all enchantment spells.

Personally for my Dirge bard, I took Fey and Serpentine, so I can use mind affecting spells on beasts, magical beasts, monstrous humanoids, and undead as if they were humanoid, and just paid attention to my spell selection to make sure I picked compulsions and not charms to get the +2 to DCs.

+2 charm DC is so much worse than +2 compulsion DC, it's not even funny. I think less than 5% of all Enchantment Spells are charms. I'd avoid Infernal at any cost*.

*Disclaimer: That's optimization. If you want Infernal for RP reasons, go with it.

Silver Crusade

After looking at Sandman it actually seems pretty great and dead on to what I want. Now I just need to figure out how to build a good one.

I think cheapy is right and the sandman bard is the best you will get with paizo only material. Just make sure to boost your dcs as much as you can because with only 6 levels of casting eventually you will be at lower spell levels (and thus lower dcs) and enchantment is pretty much the most resisted kind of magic. You will also want to make sure your bard can do other things (like maybe fight) for those times when enchantments arent going to work

Also (and this might not be entirely appropriate) an Illusion/Enchantment Focussed Arcane Trickster might be the closest outside of Bard. Sorcerer has slower progression to qualify but doesn't lose the bonus feats a Wizard taking A.T. does and with Aasimar I am told that the Daylight ability allows someone to qualify with 1 level in an Arcane Spell Using class.

Worth a shot.
