Gunslinger Upgrade

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

So, I was doing some double checking on my gunslinger character and I came up with a question. Maybe some of you could help me with.

The Gunslinger starts out with a free firearm with the broken condition. After a few PFS scenarios I decided to buy a masterwork pistol so I paid out my 1300gp. My question is could I have just paid 300gp to upgrade the free pistol that my character got when he was created?

Thanks for the help

no, once an item has been created, u cannot add masterwork quality to a weapon after its been created. Gunslingers already start off with a free broken weapon, a normal item, so yes u woulda had to do as u did and just bought one straight out.

Actually, the Gunsmithing feat specifically states that a Gunslinger can upgrade their starting battered weapon to masterwork for 300 gp and one day of work; so, yes, you could have just paid the 300 gp and upgraded the one you had.

Quote:

Gunsmithing

You know the secrets of repairing and restoring firearms.

Benefit: If you have access to a gunsmith's kit, you can create and restore firearms, craft bullets, and mix black powder for all types of firearms. You do not need to make a Craft check to create firearms and ammunition or to restore firearms.

Crafting Firearms: You can craft any early firearm for a cost in raw materials equal to half the price of the firearm. At your GM's discretion, you can craft advanced firearms for a cost in raw materials equal to half the price of the firearm. Crafting a firearm in this way takes 1 day of work for every 1,000 gp of the firearm's price (minimum 1 day).

Crafting Ammunition: You can craft bullets, pellets, and black powder for a cost in raw materials equal to 10% of the price. If you have at least 1 rank in Craft (alchemy), you can craft alchemical cartridges for a cost in raw materials equal to half the price of the cartridge. At your GM's discretion, you can craft metal cartridges for a cost in raw materials equal to half the cost of the cartridge. Crafting bullets, black powder, or cartridges takes 1 day of work for every 1,000 gp of ammunition (minimum 1 day).

Restoring a Broken Firearm: Each day, with an hour's worth of work, you can use this feat to repair a single firearm with the broken condition. You can take time during a rest period to restore a broken firearm with this feat.

Special: If you are a gunslinger, this feat grants the following additional benefit. You can use this feat to repair and restore your initial, battered weapon. It costs 300 gp and 1 day of work to upgrade it to a masterwork firearm of its type.

I do not know if PFS has any rulings that counteract this, but that is RAW.

core rule book pg. 149.
"You can't add masterwork quality to a weapon after it is created; it must be crafted as a masterwork weapon (see the Craft skill). The masterwork quality adds 300gp to the cost of a normal weapon (or 6 gp to the cost of a single unit of ammunition). Adding the masterwork quality to a double weapon costs twice the normal increase (+600 gp).

But then again, it maybe one of those things where its the exception from the rules of everything else and may in fact due to its wording does let u break the rules, and add masterwork to an existing weapon.

Firearms are different.

Specific almost invariably trumps general. The general rule in this case is that you cannot make a weapon masterwork after it is created*; the specific rule is that Gunslingers can use Gunsmithing to upgrade their weapon to Masterwork.

*Even this is not completely true; they cannot make it masterwork by using the appropriate Craft skill. They can, however, find a caster with Masterwork Transformation and have them cast it on the item.

It looks even more specific - As I read it, Gunslingers can only do so to their initial battered weapon. They also don't get the normal break on cost for crafting, they have to pay full price for the masterwork quality.

Isn't there a spell which allows a cleric to make some item masterwork for materials worth 300 gp... (Masterwork Transformation: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/m/masterwork-transformation)

Upgrading you gun is not crafting, it doesn't follow any of the crafting rules. It requires no ranks in craft, no skill rolls and no raw materials. It is simply the benefit of a feat. You spend your day and 300g and your starting gun becomes masterwork.

If you're talking about a Pathfinder Society character then this question is academic...

You don't have the money to upgrade your starting weapon to a masterwork weapon. There might be a PFS legal trait that increases starting gold but I do not recall one.

You fix the battered gun after a few levels, or rather adventures.
