Ranger Favored Enemies for RotRL no help from GM

Advice

We will start Rise of the Rune Lords in the near future. In stead of guessing what Favored enemies to take I thought I would ask what I should take. Obviously the person I should ask is my GM, but he hasn't been forth coming with information before.

There are plenty of giants after the first two books, goblins early on... Go with giants and you won't go wrong.

This advice is not necessarily RotRL specific, but IMO you can never go too wrong with undead, evil outsiders, giants, humans, and maybe dragons. They are probably the most abundant enemy types.

One of my favorite things about using paizo adventure paths is the players guides that come with them.

Download and read the players guide

Also talk to your dm about it, there are traits in there that will help tie your characters into the story.

Goblins for the first iteration, then Giants after that. Use your best judgement thereafter, but always put your bonus bonuses (heh) into Giants, maxing it out as you go. Make sure you take Instant Enemy when you can, and that'll let you use that maxed out Favored Enemy against BBEG's in a crunch.

If he wanted to max it, Gnolls would be best because there are traits/feats that add +2 to Favored Enemy bonus each, apply instant enemy and the bonus skyrocket.

But it only helps later when have instant enemy.

I'd rate it humanoid (Goblin), Undead, Giant, Outsider evil, Dragon, animal, and the rest.

Grand Lodge

There are archetypes that replace Favored Enemy, if that suites you better.

Shadow Lodge

I'll second reading the free Player's Guide. But I'll point out that maybe the DM doesn't want you to know what you'll be facing ahead of time. If that's the case, start off with something that's almost always useful like Human, and then grow into the character as you play.

Giants.

Start w/ goblins at 1st level

Take giants at 5th

max out giants

Use instant enemy against bosses.

starting around book 3, the majority of the encounters will include either giants, or wizards who minmax the CR rules to their benefit to cheat players of XP.
