Hey everybody! So I'm gonna be starting a campaign soon, and I want to use a Gun Tank. I'm thinking either a tower shield or a heavy shield and a pistol to start off with and progressing to more advanced firearms as they become available, wearing medium armor progressing to heavy when it becomes advantageous. Does anyone have any experience with a gun tank that they may be able to share with me? Input/suggestions? I will be starting at level 2 with a 20 point buy, all books published by pazio are available for use

One thing to keep in mind is that early generation firearms will only hit touch AC within their first range increment, unless you're using a rifle with the Far-Reaching Sight equipment on it. So you'll want to pay attention to your own range and hope that your allies/enemies will charge into your effective range if you stick with using a pistol. When hitting Touch AC you ignore all Shield, Armor, and Natural Armor bonuses that someone has on their AC, which will also apply to you if you get hit with a firearm within the prerequisite range.
Secondly, I'd suggest using a rifle instead of a pistol for the greater range, and definitely get the Distance magical quality on your gun as soon as you can, since the Distance magical quality doubles the range of your weapon, which therein increases your range increments. So a normal Musket with a range of 40 feet with a maximum 10 range increments (equaling a max 400 feet range) will become a musket with a range of 80 feet with a max range of 10 increments for a total 800 feet maximum range.
Thirdly, if you're going to use a pistol, I'd so go ahead and do so, just keep in mind to know how plentiful guns in your game-verse are so you know how often you'll actually be running into other gunslingers will be in your campaign.

Thanks for the response!
We will be starting with low money, so obviously early firearms. But firearms are common-place, so I have no worries with running into more good weapons. I plan on eventually getting a revolver, and not using a rifle because I want to be the "tank" of the group, which is why I was originally going Gun Tank. Now, though, I may be going Fighter with a gun and a tower shield so I can accrue the necessary feats more easily.

Hmm... Then I'd not worry about having heavy armor AND a shield, since anyone else with a gun will ignore your full AC. I'd simply focus on the armor and not a shield, and focus on getting that single armor enchanted. I'd also suggest having someone on hand to cast Bullet Shield, which would give you a +4 deflection bonus to AC . Bullet Shield also scales to a +8 deflection bonus by level 20, and it also works against other types of ranged attacks such as arrows or thrown boulders..

Hehehe... Seeing the title of the thread, the first thing that popped into my head was the "Guntank" from the manga "Gunhead." I had to look around, and could have sworn that somewhere I'd bought the DVD for the live action Gunhead movie... but i guess I was mistaken. But my brain had also gone to Gundam... Amazing how that works, isn't it.

Input/suggestions?
Play a pistolero instead.

"This ability replaces the bonus feats the Gunslinger gains at 4th level and every four levels thereafter."
"This ability replaces nimble."
At level 4 a pistolero can wield a masterwork light shield without penalty, wears a +1 chain shirt, has dex 18 and puts his extra feat in dodge for AC 21.
The gun tank at lev 4 wields a heavy shield and wears plate with max dex of 2 for AC 23. At level 1-3 the advantage of gun tank would be slightly larger, but after level 4 it drops fast, since nimble and extra feats are gone. And at the lower levels, the +2-3 AC is bought with a -6 on climb, swim, stealth, acrobatics, speed reduced by 10, which could be very important due to 20 ft range of pistol, and with having to argue with the GM about reloading the pistol with a heavy shield (normally it should not be possible).
