I suppose it depends - at least in part - on the setting. Having Barbarian powers in a nation of barbarians isn't going to attract any fanbois or -grlz.
Another thing to keep in mind is "demonstrability"; Uncanny Dodge for instance isn't something that you can show off easily, but Fast Movement is. In a nation where races are held in high regard, that's definitely a "Special Power".

I'll give you a third. I've always interpreted this pretty PC friendly. Since most people don't have a PC class at all, being a PC means you have a Special Power compared to most people.
You can command the forces of magic, invoke your god's name to powerful effect, slay giants and dragons single-handedly, and sneak into the most carefully guarded places in the world. You are impressive. I want to follow you.
